So there's a lot of talk about getting rid of Higbee so I thought I'd dig this up for people to see a little of what he provides play in and play out. Now the blocks don't look that devastating but 80% of blocking is getting to your guy which Hopkins nor Long have shown and we don't know enough about Davis yet to see if he can do it. Higbee's not gonna be worth another contract but I just don't see the Rams getting rid of him when he's a HUGE part of the offense.

Higbee will most likely be our 2nd leading receiver in number of catches this year with 70+ and price himself out of our next year needs.:explode1:

In an offseason of completely off the wall talk and suggestions the idea of getting rid of Higbee to me was the most bizarre. How anybody could think getting rid of him was a good idea is beyond me

Well - not going to need to watch much of Higbee’s plays.

The Wolford missed block was BAD against Hags in playoffs.

That said he is LOOKING good. Cut his hair & Ripped.

He like I just posted somewhere here a minute ago how UNDERRATED Higbee is. Probably Top Ram TE in history??

Higs is probably the Rams most consistent player in both health and talent. You know exactly what you're going to get. A hard working guy who is quite frankly an overachiever. I'd hold on to higs as long as he's producing because he's always going to give you 100.

I don't think Rams management thinks of it as good idea or a bad idea, it's just something they have to do to make the team better. They traded Woods, they traded Ramsey, they cut other defensive players who us fans thought were vital to the teams success. On paper, Higbee is TE1 right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was a Post June 1 cut if the other TE's show promise in OTA's.

Yes the Rams want to make the team better... but they also have a coach who wants to score points if he's going to stick around. Cutting Higbee would hurt their ability to score points and McVay doesn't want to coach a crappy offense.

Higbee's production has been in decline since 2019 when he had his career year with Goff feeding him the ball. Hurt their scoring? He averages 3 TDs per year not exactly a scoring machine. His production is replaceable. IMO the emergence of Nacua will take a lot of his targets and production. Nacua will be a Y receiver and TEs run a modified version of their route tree. There have been a lot of blocks Higbee misses, including chip blocks to help slow footed Havenstein.

IMO even if he stays on the roster this year he's gone next year. This year is all about building the foundations for the future....and that includes at TE. IMO if Long or Allen show any promise at all in OTAs I would be surprised if they didn't try to trade or as a late release Higbee to clear cap space.

Tyler has his ring which he has clearly earned. But this is about the future.

Higbee getting cut ? Even a question about it is INSANE!!

Do you even keep a monitor on what’s going on with The Rams?

Mcvay LOVES him!!! Your boy Havienstien needs him next to him on the edge.

Tell me about the Denver game why The Rams did so well against them.

In the SOFI 2nd niner game Higbee had a pass he could have went for 6. That play basically was when the division was lost early.

Rookies are a gamble. You can't say what Nacua will or won't do. Higbeast may have only scored three TD's himself last year, but how many TD's did other's score because of him?
Yeah, Higbee is going nowhere this year.

Remember 2023 is ALL about seeing what the Rams have before restocking for 2024. Rams front office can say all they want about winning each game but it’s ALl about assessment and building a competitive roster that can be augmented for a 2024 run.

I don't think Rams management considered it at all. They had replacements for Woods.

Ramsey was about pay and they had youth behind him which they don't with Higbee.

Cut other "vital defenders"? Who Floyd? LOL vital? Overpaid for average production that's the only other defender cut.

People around here have way too much of a fascination with post June 1 btw especially when the Rams are doing their best to create cap for next year. Now at least one restructure will have to happen for cap this year but Higbee won't create enough of it so it'll be one of the big 3. If they do move on from Higbee there's nobody on the roster to replace him at all.

"Higbee's not gonna be worth another contract" sounds right and it's something on which we can agree. But why not? He's a well rounded TE. He knows the system. He's been relatively healthy (missed 4 games in the last 6 years). And they'll have a boatload of money available. I'd say, if getting rid of him this year is ridiculous, next year would be almost the same....providing he's not asking for Tony Gonzalez money.

He had a career high in receptions last year, as well as a career high in yards. West Coast showed his blocking is good. Where's this "decline"?

About Rams TE situation and potential strategy in ‘23…

Higbee is #1 and will play out his current contract but will not be extended.

McVay will force-feed Allen, Long, and Hopkins in vastly increased 12 sets AND in TE targeting by Stafford.
This will allow McVay to assess his TE pecking order AND improve his running game against all comers. This, in turn, will re-establish Rams O as a top 5 unit. One that is more unpredictable.

Also, increased 12 sets will mean that Kupp and Jefferson will be more than adequate as top 2 WR’s. Nacua, Allen, and Skow will find fewer snaps and targets, but overall passing will be improved as will running game.

This O, in no small part thanks to a studly OL, will once again be able to average close to 30 ppg.

I think the offseason acquisitions of Long and Allen at TE make this 12 personnel strategy fairly obvious.

People see Ramsey and Floyd moved and think Higs fits that profile but Ramsey and Floyd both got paid and their play dipped. Higs took an affordable contract. That's why he's still here. Fastest way off the Rams is to get paid and then not produce at the appropriate level. We have seen that over and over again. Rams will pay you but if your play isn't there you're not gonna be around long.

This applies to Hav as well as Higs btw. Both signed contracts that were appropriate to their play. Neither are top players, but they're productive and dependable and not overpaid. So as it pertains to both sure they could be moved to make cap space but to do that there has to be someone behind them. Moving Hav would probably be a nightmare so he's more unlikely to be moved than Higs. But with Higs it is similar in that if you remove him what are you gonna get.

If we get into camp and Allen or Hopkins goes off then that might create the situation where they feel comfortable cutting bait on Higs a year early. Because he's not gonna be the guy beyond this year. But failing that it seems smarter to restructure someone to get the space you need or cut/move someone else.

That's fair. I shouldn't have made such a broad statement. It depends on the contract (he's no longer worth a contract similar to his previous one) and if a guy like Allen can come along. Much like Greg Gaines, I think there's a price where we can keep Higbee but not sure it's what will work for both sides.

I disagree slightly. It's mostly about see what we have and restocking for 2024 but it's a lot about McVay enjoying coaching and having an offense to play with (whether or not we agree that that should be a goal).

TE is woefully under-utilized in McVay's offense. Only time that wasn't the case was the end-of-season stretch in 2019. And he excelled with the extra touches and looks.

Could always get more out of him if the offense would give him 3-5 more touches a game, IMO.

Higs doesn’t miss many games during the season. But it seems like he gets ding up a lot and misses a series (or multiple series) during games throughout the season lately. But I have factual information to back that up :)
