While Rams head coach Jeff Fisher has yet to make it official, we hear it’s extremely likely defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who remains suspended for his part in the “Bountygate” fiasco, will be following in the footsteps of his son, Blake, who was fired as the team’s linebackers coach Jan. 2, despite a fair amount of success helping to coordinate the Rams’ defense this season in his father’s absence.
“At first, I thought there was some real loyalty to Gregg, but as more 'Bountygate' details came out, it really does look like he threw a lot of players under the bus,” said one team insider. “I could see that being a big problem as far as attracting other players.”
That the league does not appear to be in any rush whatsoever to decide when, and if, Gregg Williams will be even eligible to return to the Rams makes it more likely that the Rams will move in another direction and hire a new defensive coordinator in the not too distant future. Word is a hot prospect to replace him is former Cardinals and Chiefs defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who has spent the last three years as the coordinator at Cal and is said to be anxious to return to the pro level.
As for Blake Williams, who has never been on a pro staff in which his father was not the defensive coordinator, his future appears cloudy after reportedly rubbing both the team’s players and coaches the wrong way much more often than not in his one year with the team.
“There had been rumors that he was in trouble,” the insider said. “He just didn’t have good people skills at all. He’d have these confrontations on the field that just seemed weird a lot of the time. He had a huge ego for someone with his résumé. He just didn’t seem to mesh with the other guys.”
The way we hear it, Rams assistant head coach Dave McGinnis, who also played a big role in coordinating the defense this season, is not particularly interested in becoming the full-time defensive coordinator.
“I don’t think he wants to do that. He’s happy the way things are with him,” the insider said of McGinnis, who apparently is friendly with Pendergast.
