Rams Open OTAs

- The Rams just wrapped up their second of 10 Organized Team Activities and with nearly a full 90-man roster on the field, it’s a bit crowded at the Continuity X Training Center.

- For the coaching staff, this time of year is a joy. They get to be out on the field coaching the team of which most of the players will form the team come September. Head coach Jeff Fisher falls in that line as well and it’s clear he’s happy to be back on the field.

“It’s the first time the rookies got to meet the vets and the vets got to meet the rookies,” Fisher said. “From that point on, it went very smooth. I was really pleased with what we got done yesterday. We added a bunch of things today. We have a lot of base in, we’ve got third down, we got the red zone today. We have thrown a lot at them but they have responded very well and they are practicing very well together.”

- There have already been a few alterations to the roster after the Rams signed veteran tackle Barry Richardson and linebacker Mario Haggan yesterday. Still, the Rams aren’t quite at the 90-player limit. On Wednesday, a number of players weren’t in attendance. Here’s the rundown:

- WR Brian Quick, WR Chris Givens and RB Isaiah Pead were in California for a rookie event signing autographs, getting their pictures taken for football cards, etc. Quick and Givens will return next week but Pead can’t return until June 7 after he goes back to Cincinnati to finish school.

- Pead, RB Nick Schweiger, TE Cory Harkey and P Johnny Hekker are all on the quarter system and won’t return until their class has taken their final round of tests in June.

- LB Derrick Choice, an undrafted free agent from Stephen F. Austin, met with Fisher on Wednesday morning and let him know that he is all out of football. Choice was waived on Tuesday afternoon after opting to leave the game.

“He decided he’d had enough football,” Fisher said. “He decided he wanted to go on and go back to school or start a career. You’ve got to respect somebody that can walk away with his head up and that’s what he did this morning.”

- Fisher likes to have some fun with his rookies so he has them introduce themselves in a unique way:

“You have them stand up and say their name, position and school, his favorite movie, the name of his first pet and what happened to it and his nickname…it was good,” Fisher said.

- On the injury front:

LT Rodger Saffold has not been fully cleared yet from his pectoral injury. He was limited Wednesday with Kevin Hughes taking reps in his place. Saffold is very close according to Fisher.

WR Danario Alexander also was limited (hamstring).

S Matt Daniels had a knee scope about seven weeks ago and the Rams are “backing” him down a little to ensure he makes a complete recovery. He did not practice Wednesday.

TE/FB Ben Guidugli is wearing a walking boot on his right foot and also did not practice. Fisher said he has a foot issue that he’s working through.

- RT Jason Smith is taking his fresh start serious. He switched his jersey number from 77 to 72. Rookie OT Joe Long is now wearing 77.

- As for the action on the field, the Rams got a lot done with a couple of standouts from a few of the passing drills.

[hil]- CB Josh Gordy is still working with the first team as the likes of Bradley Fletcher recovers from injury and the rookies such as Janoris Jenkins settle in. It’s been widely assumed that Jenkins will eventually win the job opposite Cortland Finnegan and though that still seems likely, Gordy doesn’t seem willing to just hand over the gig. He had a number of pass breakups during Wednesday’s practice.[/hil]

- [hil]WR Greg Salas is coming off a serious leg injury but you wouldn’t know it watching him on Wednesday. He made a few grabs for touchdowns during some red zone work including one perfectly run route where he turned Fletcher inside out.[/hil]

- The competition at left guard is only just beginning. I’ll have more in a story for this site later today but it’s starting to heat up. Fisher acknowledged that a number of players will get a shot there. For today, it was mostly Bryan Mattison getting the work there.

- Not much hesitation throwing rookie DT Michael Brockers in the fire. He got some work with the top unit on Wednesday.

- That’s going to do it for today. Thanks for reading. I’ll be out of pocket until early next week but will be back with updates for next week’s OTAs.

Gordy may now be in competition with Murphy on the depth chart. i know its really really early but.. I really want to see what Murphy has this year. Not that I'm complaining about a surplus of quality corners or anything :what: . Just want to see the dude bringing the wood on the field. We're talking battle for #5 and 6 CB if Tru is as advertised and may have the 4 spot. May the best man win.

Yep. These are two units that last year were perceived as liabilities last year (WR/CB) and now they could shake out to be dominant. I'm really looking forward to preseason games this year to see how the competition unfolds. I typically didn't care much for preseason; but this year, I dunno. It's becoming fascinating.

So many battles I want to watch. Its endless. WR, CB, TE, excited about seeing our new speed RB's. The Oline battles for starting LG, depth at OT. I get pretty excited about the draft and typically do my homework but I can't ever recall being actually pumped about seeing undrafted free agents, ever. Guys like Daniels, Sammy Brown, Hoffman-Ellis, even Oline guys like T-Bob and Joe Long. Can't wait.

Salas may beat out Dola.

Maybe not...

But maybe
I bet if he plays that well, he will be the number 2.

Anyways, I like Gordy more than Murphy. Murphy hasn't proven much yet. I don't recall him playing that well as a rookie, and he was injured last year. But the good news, as others mentioned is that we have a pretty deep looking roster this year. That makes me feel better about Fletcher's injury situation.

Hmmm. I can't remember much about Murphy playing at all. I mean, he played IN a lot of games, but he didn't start any. The only thing I recall is that interception against Oakland. So I guess if you don't remember much, he couldn't have been great, and he couldn't have been bad. I guess.

That's the first play that came into mind for me too... I guess he's been injured so much, and when he does play he's doing more of the little things than the flashy things.

I remember that he got schooled by Roddy White. But that is understandable because it is Roddy White and he was a rookie. Other than that I don't recall.

love hearing those things- I liked how Gordy played last year and it was a shame when Salas went down as he was starting to show some signs of being a really good one- I thinkn he may have a good year.

Murphy was one of the talked up guys in 2011 camp reports. I know, camp reports--but it was different guys saying the same thing independently. He was coming on.

Just a few examples.

Tue Aug 02, 2011

I thought Murphy continued to shine.

Thu Aug 04, 2011

Murphy still looks good and had a great pass breakup

Mon Aug 01, 2011

Jerome Murphy excelled again today! He was responsible for Craig Dahls pick of Bradford. He tipped the ball while fully extended in mid air.

Mon Aug 01, 2011

Murphy has gotten better each day at camp. No player IMO receives more individual attention from Spags then Murphy...plays on all st units and just looks impressive

Sun Jul 31, 2011

On Defense the young guys who stood out were as follows Jerome Murphy- looked solid in coverage and forced a fumble, was around the action when on the field.

.

will gordy even make the team? you'd think he is the #6 cb when the dust settles.

i think i would prefer salas in the slot than amendola. he showed much more yac ability than Danny ever will. and that's after only 6 games. what's he gonna be like with a full off season to get into sync?

.

I'm interested in Gordy, Murphy, and Salas, yes. However, the guy that I think will grow the most this season is Austin Pettis. Don't forget that he had no offseason as a rookie last year and still managed to shine in some games. He's going into his second year. He's even more motivated than he usually is. And he has size and hands.

I truly believe that Pettis is going to make a huge impact for us.
