Ravens install new goal posts in wake of 'Tucker Rule'

A view of the newly extended goal posts at M&T Bank Stadium.

Only the sharpest eyes will be able to notice the subtle difference to NFL fields this season.

The uprights of all goal posts will be five feet higher, thanks to a new rule passed during the offseason. Proposed by the Patriots, the "Tucker Rule" -- named in honor of Ravens kicker Justin Tucker -- hopes to eliminate the type of controversy we saw on a 27-yard Tucker field-goal attempt that sailed over an upright and was ruled good to beat New England in 2012's Week 3 bout.

The Ravens' official website was on hand when the new uprights were installed at M&T Bank Stadium this week. TheRavens were forced to buy entirely new goal posts rather than simply add five-foot additions because of wind load. Ravens head groundskeeper Don Follett said the new uprights were tested in winds of more than 100 miles per hour.

The whole process is financially exorbitant. The New York Times reported that a set of new posts will run teams and stadium operators $10,000 and up. Teams must also install the new posts at their practice facilities. Things get even more expensive if teams are forced to replace the foundations that fasten the goal posts into the ground. Thanks, Belichick.

The Ravens' website -- I'm telling you, they were all over this story -- additionally offered up a slide show presentation of the installation process. Check it out for yourself, then wow friends at the next wine and cheese soirée with your bottomless knowledge of pro football minutiae.

They stop the game for all sorts of reasons - but they can't just use instant replay on field goal attempts - EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE A TV TIMEOUT ANYWAY?!?!

I also love how the new goal posts are financially exorbitant, even though:

1) elsewhere there is a thread how teams divided up $6 billion in shared revenue this year - the goal posts are $10,000.
2) the article admits that the reason they can't just extend the arms a bit is that the goal posts wouldn't be safe then - meaning that the Ravens' old goal posts just barely made the standards for wind safety. Funny how nickel and diming things come back to bite you on the ass - they could have built them right and to last initially, but it's somebody else's fault they went cheap initially.

That Belichick's opinion even matters is an insult to the rest of the other 31 HCs. And you know why his opinion even matters; because Goodell is buddy-buddy with Kraft.

The day Belichick is fired/retires will be a day of celebration. Not because one of the better coaches is out of the league, but his influence.

The day Goodell leaves will also be one of celebration.

Perhaps his successor won't try to kill the golden goose and will care more about actual integrity than perceived integrity.

Exactly! It's OK to film opponents' practices & hold receivers on every play in the Super Bowl, but if it costs the Pats a week-3 game, look the fuck out

the government has satellites that can watch your every move, yet somehow, the NFL cant figure out if a football made it between 2 yellow posts.

A laser pointing straight up from each upright. If the ball goes over the top, POOF! No more ball and FG no good. :snicker:
