The Broncos-Chargers game has been halted with just over nine minutes to play in the second quarter while Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is attended to on the sideline.
Phillips was run over at the end of a play that ended with cornerback
Bradley Roby returning an interception 49 yards for a touchdown.
Chargers running back Melvin Gordon ran into Phillips after trying to corral Roby, leading to a long look from medical personnel on the sideline and an eventual trip off in a cart.
Phillips was seen moving his fingers and Jamie Erdahl of CBS reported that he was talking to those working on him before being strapped onto a stretcher for his trip off the field.
It’s the second medical issue for a Broncos coach this season. Head coach Gary Kubiak was hospitalized earlier this month and didn’t coach in the team’s first game against the Chargers after being diagnosed with a complex migraine condition.
Roby’s touchdown gave the Broncos a 10-7 lead.
UPDATE 5:28 p.m. ET: Erdahl reports Phillips has been taken to the hospital and that linebackers coach Reggie Herring is now making the defensive calls for Denver.
