Now that we have discussed draft preferences, strategies, and umpteen players followed by just as many opinions on those players, maybe it’s time to take a look at some guys already on the roster who may be ready to step into bigger roles.

If there’s one thing the Rams have excelled at since Snead has been the GM, it’s the ability to obtain and develop talent via day 3/UDFA and plucking players from another team’s PS—guys who have performed well for the Rams and even gone on to have solid careers.

Recently retired Darius Williams is a prime example. So is Nick Scott, who is currently carving out a nice living. Heck, we can go all the way back to Rodney McCleod.

Here are some noteworthy bottom of the roster/PS guys who might figure into the draft strategy this year.
*sometimes the team site and others are not up to date, so if I mention a player who is no longer under contract, feel free to correct me.

WR- at 6-3/211 True Edwards fits what many of us feel should be on the Rams’ shopping list, no? He played well enough in preseason last year to stick around. Having a big wideout to play outside the numbers, being the understudy to Adams, makes it even easier to draft Lemon at #13. Pressley leads a brigade of smaller WRs. Not sure where they would fit in this year, but maybe next?

IOL-because I had seen Dedich called into action the previous season, I knew he would make the roster as proven depth; but after him, the most impressive player I saw on the OL last preseason was Wyatt Bowles. I was disappointed the Rams let him get away, but they got him back. Who knows where Limmer is in that depth hierarchy now, but he has real game experience. Dylan McMahon is another IOL developmental player the Rams have retained. Where would he fit? And of course Acuri is still hanging around.

LB-after Landman and Speights, we know Dolac is there, but what about Elias Neal?
Strictly STs? Grant Stuard might seem a bit on the small side. Don’t recall seeing him play at all.

CB-what is the general opinion on Josh Wallace and Cam Lampkin? I didn’t see enough from Wallace to allay my concerns regarding the secondary. Glad the Rams picked up two huge improvements there, but they could use another solid CB to go with Forbes.

Anybody else you would like to mention for consideration?
Just how big of a factor do you see these aforementioned players being when the Rams draft?

I mentioned this guy before, Mark Redman. I think he has a chance to be a functional 4th TE. Maybe not this year since Higbee is back, but if he can stick around, he could be Davis Allen's replacement in 27' since its likley both Allen & Higbee will be gone in 27'.

Excellent point, especially if the Rams want to continue using 13 personnel as a staple. They will have to carry 4 on the roster and another stashed on the PS.

This is a big year for Allen. If he can’t leap over Higbee at least, he might not be re-signed. He might have to get ahead of Parkinson as well if he wants to stay—have a hard time seeing that.

So yeah, there is definitely gonna be at least one opening at TE next year.

Maybe I'm wrong....

This thread seems to be more about what's at the bottom of a popcorn bag.... Basically hoping to find popcorn instead of a handful of kernels.

So how fast is Tru Edwards? He was in track I think, hurdles. Also I thought I heard he was coming off an injury. He did look good in pre season.

If the Rams do not draft a Safety, I like Nate Valcarcel. He has more coverage ability then some on the depth chart plus was good on special teams at Northern Illinois. Very physical, however, he transitioned from CB to Safety, which explains why I like his coverage abilities.

How do you think he stacks up against McCollough (S3?)

They are different, McCollough hits like a truck and is very good on a blitz, whereas, Valcarcel is better in coverage and has more range. McCollough has a Toby Wright vibe & Valcarcel is more like Keith Lyle, if that helps.

If the plan is Lake in the slot and the two KC boys outside the hash, then it feels like Wallace should have an opportunity to compete for roles that are appropriate. At this point Forbes is feeling those additions, as they happened because he wasn't good enough. He's only making $2M or so this year, but the team isn't gonna pick up his 5th year option for $12M so he'll be a FA after this season at the very least. And that's assuming he makes the roster this year.

Rams seem to prefer a room with 5 corners for the season under Shula. League is somewhere in that 5-6 range. Lake takes a typical corner job with the slot, so at the bottom of the Rams roster this year I would assume they want some teams contribution to help them improve in that third phase.

McDuffie > Watson > Forbes > Lampkin > Johnson is the current group. So if the Rams draft a corner in the first three rounds he would probably bounce Forbes down to those last two spots where you get into the special teams range. Taking a corner would basically put some serious heat on Forbes for camp, and might squeeze him off the roster if they manage to find a couple bottom roster types who are good teams contributors.

Refresh my memory, Wallace plays STs?
If so, then he definitely has an advantage to making the roster—assuming he was good on STs last year.

I don’t see Forbes being cut, though. Like you said, he’s on a pretty cheap deal. I suppose it would be a three way battle if the Rams draft someone.
