Two John Jay High School football players who appear to have deliberately tackled a referee during a game Friday night, have been suspended from school as well as the team, officials said Sunday.

The district released a statement Sunday morning about the event.

"This is disturbing," Northside ISD spokesman Pascual Gonzalez said as part of the district's official statement. "It is not the sportsmanlike behavior that we teach our students. We are cooperating fully with the University Interscholastic League with this investigation."

Late in Jay’s 15-9 loss at Marble Falls, one defensive back ran from 7 yards away into the back of an official watching a run play unfold 9 yards in front of him.

After the referee fell to the turf after the first hit, another player standing to the right of the referee and several yards away led with his helmet and dove into the official.

Both players were ejected. Northside ISD athletic director Stan Laing said the video was “very disturbing.” Laing said the district is investigating the sequence of events leading up to the play, and the UIL is aware of what happened.

“The question of what instigated that is what we’re trying to figure out,” Laing said.

Laing said the officiating chapter that oversees the Austin-based crew that worked the game is in the process of getting statements regarding the incident.

Before that play, two Jay players were ejected on separate plays. The incident occurred with about a minute left in the game, according to Marble Falls coach Matt Green.

Marble Falls was looking to gain the yards required to extend its possession and effectively run out the clock and called for a handoff toward the left side of the line of scrimmage.

The penalties stemming from the incident gave Marble Falls a first down. After the game, Green said Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized for the late events.

Green said he had to believe there was no way Gutierrez condoned the behavior and was upset with the behavior of those players. Laing said the district is trying to get multiple accounts of what happened leading up to the play and determine what instigated those events.

Green said the play was unique from others he’s witnessed during his career.

“I’ve coached 14 years and I’ve never seen anything like it,” Green said.

That's unacceptable and those 2 players should not be allowed to play a down of football again.

My old High School was totally screwed out of a playoff game by the refs. The running back actually made it on the Rams roster during preseason. He ran for about 300 yards during that game and had about 3 TD's called back for phantom penalties. Refs are just above alligators on my value of life scale. Lawyers are at the bottom.

If somebody gets dissed on the street and does something like this, they're charged with assault...What is the difference here ?? The difference is that this is WORSE, because of the damage they could have done. especially the punk ass who dove into the guy with his helmet...Just my opinion, of course..I have zero tolerance for this kind of bullshit...

I would charge them with battery and the second guy gets battery and intent to maim.
But Belicheat can grab a referee and get away with it.

You can add baseball umpires to that list. At the high school level and lower its clear some are biased and intentionally help or hurt certain teams.

I am around baseball a lot.
What I see is teams, players and parents that cannot accept that they are not very good.
There really would be no reason for a ref to pick a side. I have coached football and baseball at those levels and I have never really seen this. Different umpires call balls and strikes based on different things but I have not seen obvious favoritism. There would be no reason for it.

I'm fairly certain that some states have made it a felony to assault an official at a sporting event.

I used to ref basketball a lot. I've been given the evil eye and screamed and cussed at... worse thing that ever happened to me was having my truck keyed. Refs always parked in spots that were known to players.

These dirt bags should be charged with assault.

I've purposely ran over a ref before, but nothing like this. We had a ref that just kept getting in the damn way, he didn't know wtf he was doing, they claim they are part of the field so I knocked him on his ass while chasing down the ball carrier.

These two didn't even make it look like an accident. What they did was beyond anything I've seen a player do. They deserve to never walk on the field again.

Years ago when my son played Little League baseball we got to the park early and I was watching another game. I was amazed the umpire was calling these strikes for a pitcher when the balls were well outside or over a batter's head. A couple were in the dirt.

I thought it was just a case of making batters swing at that level. Then I see he's only doing it for one pitcher. I find out after the game the ump was that pitcher's older brother. One of the women recognized it and told the coach of the losing team. The coach went ballistic on the guy. I thought there was going to be a fight.

In a smaller town there can be many reasons for bias. I did some umping in a men's fastpitch softball league. If guy pissed me off enough I guarantee you the strike zone widened when he came up to bat. And I've seen umps get pissed off and any close call always goes against the team that pissed him off.

I pitched for many years around the state in men's fastpitch. After my umpiring experience, I learned to be nice to those guys. I wasn't above kissing a little ass on occasion. :sneaky:

There may be a small chance this was payback in kind. Without all the facts I'll reserve judgement. Hard to think of anything that could justify what these boys did....but humanity has a way of surprising me from time to time.

Everyone involved in that sounds just awful.
Here if there is a relation between an ump and player the ump doesn't work the game. I am speaking high school level, not sure about little league as I never messed with that really.

My grandson will be in a high school in two more years. I'll find out what the high school level is like then. My son never played high school ball. He was more interested in girlfriends and hanging out at that time.

My grandson is still a couple more years to high school and he's been playing organized baseball and football for 4 years. He plays left guard and defensive tackle. When I was in elementary school the was no baseball team after little league and football was only 6 man flag football. It wasn't until high school there was football with helmets and pads. Kids today are getting a jump on the game at an early age.

At 10-11 years old they play full 11 on 11 with all the equipment on the high school field with quality artificial turf and full scoreboard. I woulda killed for that opportunity when I was that age.

What those two players did was assault. I don't really care about calls in the game, you just don't do that to a defenseless person. This is on par with a "youth" cold cocking an older person on the street, knocking them out, and laughing about it over the unconscious person's body..and filming it for YouTube

Yeah, I agree it was a classless cheap shot. Not only did they deserve to be kicked off the team and suspended from school, the authorities oughta be looking at possibly filing assault charges.

I agree.
Youth sports certainly has changed. My boy started playing football around 8 years old....too young in my opinion. He didn't get serious with baseball till about sophomore year of high school when it became apparent that was going to be his game over football.
