First Look: Rams travel to 49ers to kick off divisional play on Sunday Night Football

After sweeping the NFC East, the Rams (4-1) now shift their attention to the start of divisional play in primetime with a Sunday Night Football showdown at the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. Kickoff from Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, is scheduled for 5:20 p.m. pacific time on NBC.

In advance of the contest, here is your first look at Rams-49ers on Oct. 18, including notable 49ers additions, some of San Francisco's top statistical performers in Week 5 and key storylines:

Notable 49ers additions

Traded a 2020 fifth-round pick and 2021 third-round pick to Washington for offensive tackle Trent Williams in April. A seven-time Pro Bowler with Washington, Williams appeared to be acquired as San Francisco's left tackle successor to Joe Staley, a three-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl selection who announced his retirement shortly after the trade was announced after 12 seasons holding down that spot. Williams has started at left tackle in every game for the 49ers so far.

Drafted former Arizona State wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk 25th overall. One of two first round selections by the 49ers earlier this year, Aiyuk missed their season-opener against the Cardinals but added a dynamic athlete to their offense once he got healthy. He's tied for third on the team in targets and has the third-most receiving yards (153) behind wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (227) and tight end George Kittle (271).

Top Performers in Week 5

QB C.J. Beathard completed 9 of 18 pass attempts for 94 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' 43-17 Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins, also losing a fumble. He replaced starter Jimmy Garoppolo, who completed 7 of 17 passes for 77 yards with two interceptions and was benched at the start of the third quarter. It was Garoppolo's first game back from a high right ankle sprain which forced him to miss the previous two weeks.

RB Raheem Mostert, who sustained a knee injury Week 2, tallied 11 carries for 90 yards (both team-highs) plus three receptions for 29 yards in his return to action. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk accounted for the team's lone rushing touchdown.

Aiyuk and Kittle tied for the team lead in receiving yards with 44 each, but Kittle led the 49ers in catches (4) with Aiyuk coming in second (3). Bourne (two receptions for 30 yards) was on the receiving end of Beathard's touchdown.

Linebacker Fred Warner paced San Francisco's defense with 11 total tackles.

On special teams, kicker Robbie Gould made his lone field goal attempt (37 yards) and both of his extra point attempts.

Early storylines to watch, and what they mean for the Rams

The 49ers have dealt with their fair share of injuries this season on both offense and defense, no doubt playing a partial role in their perceived slow start.

However, Rams head coach Sean McVay isn't letting that perception influence his outlook on Sunday's game.

"This is the reigning NFC champs, reigning division champs," McVay said during his weekly Monday evening video conference, emphasizing that he anticipates Los Angeles will get San Francisco's best shot on Sunday no matter who is or isn't available.

Statistically, it's not difficult to see why.

Despite playing without their two best defensive linemen – Dee Ford, who is on injured reserve with a back injury, and Nick Bosa, who sustained a season-ending torn ACL in Week 2 – the 49ers have the No. 5 total defense in the NFL, allowing the 11th-fewest rushing yards and third-fewest passing yards so far. They were also top five in total defense and pass defense last year, and ranked 17th against the run.

While it's been a different story offensively – 21st in total offense this year after finishing fourth at the end of the 2019 regular season – the effectiveness of Kittle, Aiyuk, Garoppolo, Mostert and wide receiver Deebo Samuel as they continue to get healthy cannot be underestimated.

For further evidence the 49ers shouldn't be overlooked, besides the fact that this is a divisional game: The Rams have the No. 2 pass defense in the NFL, the 49ers No. 3; the Rams have the No. 10 rushing defense in the NFL, the 49ers No. 11.

Notable Rams-49ers games in McVay era

The Rams kick off NFC West play this week with a Sunday Night Football road game against the San Francisco 49ers this week. Ahead of the contest, theRams.com takes a look at a few of the notable Rams-49ers contests through the years in the Sean McVay era:

Week 3, 2017 season: Rams 41, 49ers 39

The Rams earned McVay his second win of his head coaching career and moved to 2-1 on the season, but it was a close call.

The 49ers cut the Rams' lead to 8 on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Brian Hoyer to Trent Taylor with 5:08 remaining, then recovered a fumble by Rams kick returner Pharoh Cooper on the ensuing kickoff. San Francisco ended the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Carlos Hyde on 4th and goal, and Los Angeles needed an interception by defensive lineman Michael Brockers off a tipped pass by cornerback Troy Hill on the ensuing 2-point attempt to maintain their lead.

San Francisco recovered its ensuing onside kick at midfield, but was set back 10 yards by an offensive pass interference penalty against Taylor. Los Angeles needed a sack on 4th and 20 from the San Francisco 40 by defensive lineman Aaron Donald to end the 49ers' comeback attempt and secure the victory.

Week 7, 2018 season: Rams 39, 49ers 10

Running back Todd Gurley had 86 yards from scrimmage and three total touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), the Rams' defense created four turnovers, and special teams added a blocked punt to help Los Angeles move to 7-0 on the season.

This game featured a couple of noteworthy milestones: The Rams' first 7-0 start in 33 years, and Donald setting a new career high for sacks in a single game with four.

Week 17, 2018 season: Rams 48, 49ers 32

Quarterback Jared Goff threw four touchdown passes – two each to wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Josh Reynolds – and linebacker Cory Littleton had two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) to help the Rams finish the 2018 season 13-3 and with a 6-0 sweep of their division.

The victory gave the Rams their winningest season since 2001 and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

C.J. Anderson rushed for 132 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries in place of Gurley, who sat out the game to rest his knees, to give Los Angeles its first regular season sweep of San Francisco since 2004.

What’s Garapalo’s status, and are we rooting for him to play or not?

He'll play.
He'll also have more to worry about than what the dolphins offered.

I won't overlook the 49ers but I have been looking forward to seeing us play the niners and Seahawks.
I think we really turn it up a notch now we have cleaned out the NFC East.

I think we will see Beathard.
Basing that on nothing.

IMO, I believe it will be James Richard Garoppolo and they will see how it works with him. They could hold him out because of the pass rush, but have a feeling maybe Shanny feels Garoppolo gives him the best change to win...Again, basing that on nothing.

Whiners D is still very fast.
I hope McVay has been paying attention.
The two Whiner games I’ve watches....Philly and Miami.....none of the WR sweeps, WR screens, wildcat BS worked at all.
Philly tried a lot of that stuff and it was all negative.
The Whiners offense is pretty loaded skill wise.
Mossart is the biggest worry to me.
That dude can take a little seem and be gone. Our D penchants, although playing very well so far, for missed tackles is concerning.
Samual and the new WR are very explosive.
How do cover them?
Mix of man and zone?
Bracket one and move Ramsey (none of our LBs are going to cover Kiddle) to Kiddle on occasion?
Bracket two and man up (roll the dice) with the third?
It is an interesting match up.
Aside from discarding the cutesy stuff how does the Rams O attack their D?
They are coming off of a bad loss and need to win this game to stay relevant in the division.

I believe you are correct.
I want Beathard because I think it gives us the best chance of winning.
Haha.

You seem to ignore how beat up they are. The Niners brought up a DB from the practice squad. The Dolphins were all over that Oline too.

True.
I’m just wringing my hands over here.
Even with all their injuries their D has been good overall.
Although Fitzpatrick shredded them and you are right, their OL was dominated. Part of that is being made one dimensional because of the score.
This game does present some challenges for the D that they haven’t faced much this year.
Although win at the point of attack and things tend to go your way.

Jimmy G with a bum ankle? Heck yeah I want him playing against Aaron Donald!
It didn’t appear his ankle was bothering him vs Miami.
Pressure was.
He took a big hit and from that point on.....being a bitch.....he wasn’t setting his feet and was throwing off his back foot. But maybe his ankle was aggravated.
If that’s the case or if pressure is getting there early Id look for a lot of screens, RB, TE, WR, and misdirection stuff. Wish we had Kiser for this one.

I noticed the Dolphins throwing deep early. They had receivers running free.

I read that Shanahan pulled him thinking that he may have started him before he was fully healed.

One of their starting CBs (Sherman) appears to be still out as does their starting slot DB. The backups appear to be beat up as well, at least they were last week. The secondary was torched by Miami.

Shanahan has badly mishandled the qb situation in the last two weeks imo. Garapolo started but then benched when he couldn't plant correctly on his bad ankle in the Miami game. Playing him against the Rams seems to be risking the same result, or worse against AD & co. due to uncertain mobility. Former No. 2 Mullin was benched and demoted in the previous game-- not necessarily a great move by Shanahan. Not sure who starts, probably Beathard, but this is not a good situation for the Niners.
