I’ve watched every 2017 Rams game at LEAST twice except for the ATL playoff game. Six months later, with the new season about to begin, I’m (finally) over it and able to re-watch….

My comments are based on my reviewing the end of 2nd quarter and all of second half.

The Grass Field: Wow. Terrible. Shockingly bad.

Time of Possession: Story of the game. Second half it was ATL 20 mins to LAR 10. First half was only a bit better at 18 mins to 12. If run D is our main weakness, hard to see how two undersized LBS in the middle will make things better? Maybe our improved corners allow for an extra safety to creep in the box? (and Suh, I know). After Brockers went down, the Rams just couldn’t stop the run in this game.

Woods: MVP. Awesome. Loved the crazy dramatic bobbling sideline catch on 4th and 2 near the end.

Pharoh: After a Pro Bowl year, what an awful game. Two fumbles in first half, but ALMOST had two MORE in the second half.

Watkins: If not for Pharoh, Watkins would be my goat of the game. INVISIBLE for second half, save for one play. But crucially, he had TWO TD PASSES GO THROUGH HIS HANDS. Fourth and two: yes, he was fouled and held on the play, but Goff’s pass hit him between the chest and shoulder, and Sammy was in a great position to catch it. Honestly, it looked like he was so focused on calling “foul” that he neglected to give his all. Afterwards, he sits on the bench with a towel over his head. And THEN, on the next drive, Goff throws a long-bomb STRIKE which LITERALLY goes through Watkins hands. AGAIN, Watkins looking like he’s giving 85% effort. Grrr. Wanted to wring Watkins neck after re-watching that mess. Probably why I avoided it for so long….

Higbee: Great TE except for hands. Crucial dropped TD in the final three minutes. Grrr.

Goff: I don’t know what I just saw. Really hard to categorize his performance. The dude threw three touchdowns in the final three minutes, but his receivers DROPPED ALL THREE ( two by Watkins, one by Higbee). Goff was up and down all day. 24 of 45 for 259 yds and 1 TD and 0 INT for a lowly passer rating of 79. A number of strikes (two beauties to Woods) but also many clunkers--- poor reads and incompletions.

Play of the Game: Matt Ryan falling while sliding on the crappy field and yet somehow lofting a perfect pass for their final TD.

Ogletree: Two huge whiffs. First, a crucial third and long, had the RB dead to rights but came up empty. Second whiff, the receiver FALLS DOWN yet Ogletree somehow lets him get up and gain five more yards. Sheeesh.

Hekker. Five punts, all five inside the 20, including a 66-yarder. Yawn.

Tavon: Literally did not see him once during the section I watched.

OVERALL: Rams battled hard, but couldn’t overcome the Falcons’ long, time-killing drives. Third quarter, time of possession was approx. ATL 13:20, Rams 1:40. Ridiculous.

2018 outlook (based only on this game): In a grind-it-out playoff game, Rams inability to stop the run was exposed as a major weakness. Goff showed mostly reasons for optimism, but his lack of experience in pulling out crunch-time wins is still a significant concern. Will not miss Watkins’ lack of effort, nor Ogletree’s occasional clunker games.

It was the most glaring problem all year long: Run Defense. It bit hard against the Falcons.

Those comments on Watkins sure leaves a bitter taste. Really happy to have Cooks instead, to be honest.

Without rewatching, I recall the special teams turnovers to be the killer in this Falcon game. Those turnovers gave the game that awful feeling and I think it jarred everyone. It did me as I watched.

Live, learn and move on!

Am I the only one who thinks Gurley may have been sick. He looked exhausted later in the game. Which seems almost impossible when the offense was rarely on the field.

Agreed, announcers commented on Gurley looking gassed at the end. He had a good running game, but for some reason he couldn’t get anything going as a receiver despite numerous targets.

Sums up what I remember. That kind of defeat was hard to watch. After a year like they had, they deserved to ended on a better note.

Those special teams errors had us on our heels early. That got us off our game. And there were no exceptional performances (or luck) to get us turned back around.

Atlanta wasn’t great. But they took advantage of our mistakes and didn’t make any of their own.

I think the hit and miss run D was a by product of guys not fitting Wade's D that well.
When the young LBs were on the outside they couldn't contain, when the bets were in the Falcons just run up the guy.
Atlanta game planned and executed well and had some luck (Cooper).
With the run D issues I think it made the team much more at ease letting guys like Quinn and Ogletree go. Worst case, same production surrounded by better guys.
Really interested to see how Littleton and Samson step up this year.

Suh will make a huge difference. Brockers and Suh will keep other teams from running up the middle which was the Rams biggest issue. Running to the outside is tough against the Rams because of their speed and their weak link against outside suns (Quinn) is no longer there. I hope his replacement is better against the outside run.

I watched that long bomb to Watkins over and over a few weeks ago or so.I couldn't believe he didn't catch. I will say that Goff was late with the throw and you can see Watkins slowing down which allowed the defender to catch up to him. I think he lost concentration on the other one.

Goff was up and down all day. 24 of 45 for 259 yds and 1 TD and 0 INT for a lowly passer rating of 79. A number of strikes (two beauties to Woods) but also many clunkers--- poor reads and incompletions.

Sums it up.

Hopefully, Suh makes a difference in the run game defense. I think Wade gets the defense right in the top five.

Call me crazy but I think Littleton is going to surprise us.
And these guys don't need to be Ray Lewis.
There are 6 Pro Bowl level guys in front and behind the LBs.
They need to play disciplined, read well, and play their responsibilities. If they do that the D should be really good.

It was a frontline battle from what i can remember. Their backfield shut us for the most part. It was an endurance race, but we failed to capitalize when it mattered most. Lesson learned now back onto this 2018 season.

I don't know what remodel was done to the Coliseum over the off-season, but that better get fixed. USC tore it up all season long, including just before our critical playoff game. Hard to get traction when the field is crap all season. I don't think Suh is going to help if he's defending on skates. ATL was able to run all over us, and we didn't run on them, that simple.

Maybe McVay should hire someone who is a specialist in that field of interest.

Agreed about the crap field.

However, regarding the run game-- LAR had 16 rushes for 115 yards for a whopping 7.2 yards per rush. So, Rams had plenty of success with the run. We just didn't possess the ball long enough. Three Gurley "chunk" runs of 33, 26, and 14, but other than that, we didn't have enough success getting timely gains with the run.

My point being, our own run game was relatively strong, but our Run D was the problem.

If only we had a coach who could stick to running the ball no matter what....

There were 2 keys for me that I got to me.

Peterson was on & off the field all year. Just sucked he let Coppers fumble go to the Falcons,

Brockers getting hit by Aaron Donald.

Pharaoh Cooper fumbled in this game and later in the game, looked extremely shaky. I hope that his confidence wasn't shaken after a pro bowl year. When the Rams won SB 34, all elements of the team was rock solid. I hope Cooper recovers and can be counted on because he's a weapon but we don't need players withe fumble-itis.

The Cooper fumbles put the rams behind the 8ball but by the end of the half the rams had gained ascendancy. The d continued that in the first series after the break. 3rd and 10. Ryan throws a hurried pass to Coleman behind the line of scrimmage. 3rd and 10, Coleman catches the ball 11yards away from 1st down with his back turned towards the rams. Should be an easy stop for a 3 and out. Yes, the rams can take control of the game. Not with ogletree screaming in without thought. Hard to believe the so called leader of the d could act in such a way. Coleman easily shakes him and makes the 1st down. The rams didn't touch the ball again until late in the 3rd quarter. They must have felt the pressure to score quickly because the didn't play their natural game again. Something for mcvay to work on.
