QBs McVay said we are keeping 3

View: https://youtu.be/l1VFJjSFW5g

RBS 4 Top 2 set. Rivers is safe. Hunter has shown he can block and looks good at it. He would be the natural change of pace back if injury struck one of our top 2. McVay wants a 1-2 punch. Rivers ain’t it but is a core special teamer

TE 5 Top 4 set. + Klare, who was drafted to be our 5th. Snead said so, post draft, and he has practiced with the twos and ones

OL 8 Top 5 set. Trost G/T goes to PUP. Dedich C/G Limmer C/G Quessenberry T. McVay would like him back but hamstrings are slow to heal. Week 1 they will bring OL depth up from practice squad. A waiver wire acquisition is a possibility here

WR 6. Top 4 set. Smith is our punt returner and also our only speed guy. McVay said he is safe. Daniels has been the talk of camp and showed why preseason wk2. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that he could be WR3 by mid season.

26 players

Defense
DT 6. Top 4 set. Hamilton looks like he made it. He is a cut candidate if we acquire another OL off waivers. Donald could go to PUP. It’s looking increasingly likely he will not play in Australia. That said, wouldn’t he want to play a full season? I am putting him on the 53!

Edge 5. Top 4 set. Bailey makes it but is at the very fringes of the 53 (along with Hamilton).

LB top 4 are set. Two starters. Two core special teamers.

DBs 9. 4 CBs and 4 S set. Lampkin has turned heads in camp. He’s been in the system and gotten better. He will be rewarded and because he offers CB/S flex

24 players

STs 3.

We will probably find out tomorrow night because, as DZ likes to point out, if they don’t play then they are in. Even so, on offense, they will want to help Simpson, giving him players he has worked with, and trusts, which slightly complicates that picture.

I don't believe that Trost is eligible for the PUP list. If I'm not mistaken, he would have not had to practice at all to be eligible.

That sounds right. He's got to make the 53 and then be IR'd. IR'd prior to cutdown ends his season.

QUICK THOUGHTS:
Unless Dean Connors has an amazing final preseason game he'll be on the practice squad if he wants to be a Rams player. He's shown to be a good receiving back, but he's still averaging less than 4 yards per carry.

Rams probably won't agree, but CJ Daniels is another practice squad candidate, IMO. Carrying 6 WRs with 5 TEs is a bit much. Especially, if that 6th WR hasn't played special teams. He'd just be a bigger Tutu Atwell taking up a roster spot.

Best I can tell, OLineman Austin Blake has been everything they wanted Trost to be thus far. IMO, both Bailey and Blaske are the two UDFAs who should make this roster.

Keenan II vs. Hamilton. I'd keep Keenan II as he's the best backup in case Ford goes down again. But I'm guessing the Rams will disagree.

Finally, I'm hopeful that the team scans the waiver wire and are able to find a bigger, more physical, backup CB.

Yep. But, I think he has to first be on the initial 53 man roster.
In 2024 they introduced a new rule allowing up to 2 players to be placed on IR with the designation to return on cutdown day.

https://www.si.com/nfl/giants/onsi/nfl-tweaks-injured-reserve-rule-01j1gs4gq2sz

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the league sent a memo to its 32 clubs advising that teams can now place two players on injured reserve during the cutdown date who can later be designated for return during the season.

Blaske is most definitely a wildcard, especially considering AJ's possible suspension

Will he play Thursday night? That will be telling

I like this, although with Jackson's pending suspension I could see the Rams keeping Arcuri and putting Blaske on the practice squad, much to my chagrin.

I'll separate it from what I want to see and what I believe the Rams will do. First, the one I wish to see:

-

QB - Matthew Stafford, Ty Simpson - (2) (Stetson Bennett is dealt to the New Orleans Saints for a fifth-round pick. Saints definitely need a competent backup QB because Wilson and Rattler are both terrible - and honestly, I don't really trust Shough either. I have nothing against Bennett, but I truly feel that Simpson is more than ready to be the backup.)

RB - Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, Jarquez Hunter (KR), Dean Connors - (4) (Connors makes the team and stays on the team. Sorry, Ronnie. Maybe another team?)

WR - Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, C.J. Daniels, Jordan Whittington (KR), Konata Mumpfield, Brennan Presley (PR) - (6) (Presley's showed far too much to let go. He may not be the dynamic punt returner X is, but he's far more reliable, and can do the deep routes Smith can do. I also can't see Daniels not make the roster.)

TE - Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson, Terrance Ferguson, Max Klare, Davis Allen - (5) (No shocks here. I could see Allen get dealt for a pick and have one of Redman or Villari take the spot (however unlikely), but even I'm not crazy enough to do that, and I'd rather keep Allen unless it happens to be a crazy offer that we'd be fools not to take.)

OL - Alaric Jackson, Steve Avila, Coleman Shelton, Kevin Dotson, Warren McClendon, Justin Dedich, Dylan McMahon, David Quessenberry/Keagan Trost (PUP?), Austin Blaske - (9) (In case Trost isn't ready, Blaske can play all five positions on the line. McMahon has more than earned a roster spot, in my opinion, far more than Limmer, whom I believe is a lost cause, sad to say. The others aren't a surprise (aside from Quessenberry losing his spot, but I feel Blaske/Trost can fill that spot easily, unless, of course, Trost isn't ready from his hamstring, in which case, he goes on the PUP with Quessenberry on the roster). But the best part? No Arcuri! I'm cheering!)

DL - Aaron Donald, Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, Braden Fiske, Tyler Davis, Bill Norton - (6) (Norton's impressed me far more than Hamilton and Keenan. Big guy, but very light on his feet, pushes the pocket, gets his long arms up in passing downs, and is solid against the run. And of course, this is all contingent on if AD comes back. If not, I'd probably go with Kennan for the extra spot. Also? No Murchison either! ALL MY YES!)

EDGE - Myles Garrett, Byron Young, Josaiah Stewart, Desjuan Johnson, Wesley Bailey - (5) (No surprises here, except for maybe D-John.)

ILB - Nate Landman, Omar Speights, Shaun Dolac - (3) (I know, I know, three inside linebackers. With the safeties I have making the team, I figure that inside linebacker can be skipped a bit, and aside from that, ILB is an easy position to get teams depth for. In addition, .)

CB - Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Emmanuel Forbes, Josh Wallace, AZ Hamilton - (5) (I know it's controversial not including Lampkin. Lampkin is just far too grabby, and Hamilton is bigger as well.)

SAF - Quentin Lake, Kam Curl, Kamren Kinchens, Jaylen McCollough, Nate Valcarcel - (5) (McCollough is your quasi-inside linebacker, while Valcarcel helps a lot on teams.)

ST - Harrison Mevis, Ethan Evans, Joe Cardona - (3) (No differences.)

Practice Squad (only going to do it for this scenario, because I can't guarantee that some don't get poached in the other; we're going to lose a lot of great players. Also planning on protecting some of the players):

Matthew Caldwell, QB (or a quarterback from another roster who doesn't stick)

Jordan Waters, RB (protected)

Tim Keenan III, NT (protected)

Tru Edwards, WR

Tyler Scott, WR

Dan Villari, TE (protected)

Rohan Jones, TE

Mark Redman, TE

Darryl Peterson, OLB/ILB

Tomon Fox, OLB

Elias Neal, ILB

Nick Andersen, SAF

Nyzier Fourqurean. CB

Wyatt Bowles, OG

Bill Murray OG, (protected)

Beaux Limmer, OC/OG

Jack Bouwmeester, P (IPP)

(I'm not considering other additions outside of the roster because I'm not the front office, would have no idea whom to pick, and because, to quote Virgil Sollozzo from The Godfather: "You think too much of me, kid; I'm not that clever.")

-

And now the one I expect the Rams to do (with a lot of what I don't want to do):

QB - Matthew Stafford, Stetson Bennett, Ty Simpson - (3) (Bennett will almost certainly be the backup QB.)

RB - Kyren Williams, Blake Courm, Jarquez Hunter, Ronnie Rivers (bleh) - (4) (Yeah, Rivers makes it over Connors and even Waters. Bleh.)

WR - Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Jordan Whittington, Konata Mumpfield, C.J. Daniels, Xavier Smith - (6) (I'm sorry, X pretty much lost all of my trust with that muff in Seattle...but I still bet he'll make it. I have to think Daniels still makes the roster, but I'll still mark that down as a "maybe".)

TE - Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson, Terrance Ferguson, Davis Allen, Max Klare - (5) (No surprises.)

OL - Alaric Jackson, Steve Avila, Coleman Shelton, Kevin Dotson, Warren McClendon, Justin Dedich, David Quessenberry, A.J. Arcuri (puke), Keagen Trost (PUP) - (8) (They apparently like Arcuri a lot. Fate knows why, but they do. None of the others are really surprising.)

DL - Aaron Donald, Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, Braden Fiske, Tyler Davis, Tim Keenan, Larrell Murchison (puke) - (7) (Yeah, Norton doesn't make it in this scenario either. Murchison does, which I fully expect; the Rivers/Murchison/Arcuri love the coaching staff has is insane. If AD doesn't come back, I could maaaybe see Ty Hamilton make the roster, somehow, but even then, I doubt he makes it over an offensive lineman or defensive back; he's proven absolutely nothing and has shown nothing but bad tape. I could honestly see Murchison make it over him easily because he's at least proven something.)

EDGE - Myles Garrett, Byron Young, Josaiah Stewart, Wesley Bailey - (4) (No D-John, unfortunately. For whatever reason, I don't think the coaching staff likes him, given how long it took for him to get defensive snaps: three years' worth.)

ILB - Nate Landman, Omar Speights, Shaun Dolac, Grant Stuard - (4) (Differing slightly from my list. Stuard makes the roster instead of an extra safety.)

CB - Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Emmanuel Forbes, Josh Wallace, Cam Lampkin (5) (One difference, but I bet Lampkin makes the roster.)

SAF - Quentin Lake, Kam Curl, Kamren Kinchens, Jaylen McCollough (4) (Valcarcel doesn't make the roster in this scenario.)

ST - Harrison Mevis, Ethan Evans, Joe Cardona (3) (No differences.)

-

Sooo, that's it for me.

I would prefer keeping the five positional OL'er BLASKE on the 53 MR and PS OLT Arcuri. You know my thoughts Blaske will never make it to our PS he will be signed once released. His 2 gm. re season showcased to the NFL what he can bring to any OL unit on game day.

Seriously..... OT Trost is far from being ready.....& has shown nothing compared to several other playing OT's. Surprisingly 2 late arrivals OT Blake Hance & OG Bill Murray thus far has great 2 pre season gms. Hoping OT Hance lands a PS position.

Rams will face up against FOUR OL'ers being UFA's in 6 months ....not any is a sure sign at this time......hopefully the Rams look a bit ahead on both MR53 & PS16. Being well prepared in this OL unit helps in securing a decent OL next season helping Stafford rethink one more season before retirement in 2028.

Well done. That literally had to have taken an hour +. Appreciate it!

I don't know why people think that Ty Hamilton is going to make the roster, especially not over Keenan, Bill Norton or even someone like Murchison. Hamilton has not proven anything at the NFL level. He was terrible his rookie year, has been nothing short of a non-factor, if not an outright disaster in the preseason, no matter where he's lined up: I've seen nothing but missed tackles, no penetration up the middle, and getting washed out of his spot against the run.

Keenan and Norton, on the other hand, can and do play nose tackle, and have shown potential and flashes in this preseason. At the very least, Keenan hasn't been completely moved off his spot like Hamilton has.

Well done. That literally had to have taken an hour +. Appreciate it!
Actually took me less than a half-hour, honestly; apparently, I lack something called a "life (what is that?). :P Appreciate the kind words, though!

The way McVay talks about Allen and his importance, he's a lock for the roster.

And I may be in the minority, but I must admit I've been more impressed with Brendan Pressley who at least offers something on special teams.

I like this, although with Jackson's pending suspension I could see the Rams keeping Arcuri and putting Blaske on the practice squad, much to my chagrin.
Maybe Limmer would be trade bait instead. Hard for me to imagine risking losing a kid that can play every position on the OLine. That's like gold for active game day roster management.

I have seen the Rams primarily fielding only 2 DL'ers. & going heavy with DB's for yrs now.

Rams have 6 DL'ers {Garrett/ Ford/ Turner/ Fiske/ Davis/ Johnson} who are well blended & versatile playing in the DL posts, thus Rams might not see much difference with the rest of the DL'ers to make a strong case on any other DL's needed to be on the MR53. I lean toward Edge Pass Rushers go heavy, ILB'ers go light when making the initial cutdown.

Question here... how much difference is there on this following listed DL cadre?? where the loss of 1 or 2 other DL'ers to other teams will cost the Rams big this season. {Hamilton, Keenan, Murchison, Payton Zdroik, Bill Norton, Jaxson Moi} very high chance 4 of these 6 will be available for the Rams PS16. IMO both Davis & Turner are fully solid NT's if Ford was out ....even D. Johnson operates very good from the NT post!

What I know for a fact INJURIES took out our CB rm. & in my mind it cost us a SB win earlier this yr. Prefer on this cut down look long @ the ER's & CB's over our signed ILB'ers & DL'ers in amount size unit totals. I am impressed with Cam Lampkin/ Al'Zillion Hamilton & Nyzier Fourqurean & would prefer to lock up at least 2 of those 3 on the MR53.
