The contract extension for defensive end Eugene Sims pays him $4 million over three years, including $500,000 in guaranteed money. But incentive clauses in the deal can nearly double the value of the contract over its duration.
According to league sources, plus information filed with the NFL Players Association, Sims’ contract includes over $1 million per year in incentives achievable in each of the three years of the extension, which was signed over Labor Day weekend. If the incentives, which are tied to playing time, are met in all three years Sims will make $7.5 million over the course of the contract.
In addition, if Sims meets certain incentives in the deal, he can void the contract after year two _ or after the 2014 season.
The contract is structured in a way that saves the Rams $400,000 in much-needed cap room for the 2013 season.
