Ernest Jones thinks playing with Bobby Wagner will take his game to the next level

Linebacker Ernest Jones became the youngest starter on the Rams defense during the 2021 season and he wrapped up his rookie year with seven tackles and a sack to help them beat the Bengals in the Super Bowl.

As an ascending player, one might think Jones would be less than thrilled about the team adding a potential Hall of Famer at the same position but that wasn’t his response to the team signing Bobby Wagner this offseason. Jones said Wagner is his favorite player and that it has “been the highlight of my career” to watch him go about his business this offseason.

Jones said the two men have been talking football all the time and warned that he’s not going to stop picking his older teammate’s brain.

“He’s gonna be tired of me before it’s all said and done,” Jones said, via Jourdan Rodrigue of TheAthletic.com. “We’re going to be connected at the hip. He’s gonna be aggravated with the questions I do ask. He’s a genius, for real. Just having him there, it’s truly going to take my game to the next level.”

Adding Wagner should help the Rams in the short term and anything he can do to help Jones continue to grow as a player will make his signing a win in the long view as well.

As best I can recall Jones primarily played the MLB'er post & occasionally moved over to the wsILB post. With Bobby Wagner here Jones is sure to find himself at the WSILB post along when teamed with BW. This is not a bad thing IMO. EJ is on the light side & did get caught up in traffic a lot last season.

I expect some excellent performances from these two.

I saw an image with Ira Turner and Jones looked thin. He’s still a solid dude, but almost safety looking.

I don't want to start a whole thread on this.. but, in The Athletic today, Nate Tice has an article on players he expects to breakout next season.. it's a list with almost all second-year players. His one ILB was Ernest Jones. Tice is really high on him and points out this:

"According to TruMedia, he averaged a “splash” play — essentially a significant play for the defense, including sacks, pressures, TFLs and interceptions — once every 20.9 snaps. That was the 14th-best rate among the 101 NFL linebackers who played 400-plus snaps in 2021."

It's a pay article, so I won't post the entire thing. The Athletic is worth the price, though.

Tice basically puts numbers to what the Rams have said and what we've seen... he has great instincts.

I'm a huge Ernest Jones fan. I love the Wagner signing and only think his mentoring, combined with EJ's obvious talents are going to make him a very very good LBer in future years.

The ceiling could be as high as Ernest Jones wants it to go

A change of pace: Les Snead is investing in inside linebackers

By Kenneth Arthur@KennethArthuRS Jul 4, 2022

During his first season at the helm, Sean McVay hired Wade Phillips and that meant a 3-4 defense with multiple inside linebackers, which in turn led to a one-year pact for veteran Connor Barwin. After parting with Alec Ogletree in 2018, the team turned to undrafted free agent Cory Littleton, a Pro Bowl invitee during his first (and second-to-last) season as a starter for the Los Angeles Rams.

Rams general manager Les Snead next replaced Mark Barron with Clay “Kind of like Connor Barwin” Matthews in 2019, and then the team felt little in the way of desperation to retain Littleton or Matthews when free agency hit in 2020.

L.A. gave way to a rotation that included Troy Reeder and Kenny Young two seasons ago, but then finally relented somewhat after selecting Ernest Jones with the 103rd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft; that makes Jones the highest-drafted inside linebacker of the McVay era, and the highest for Snead since Ogletree in 2013.

Now having added Bobby Wagner to the defense for the 2022 season, clearly there’s a minor shift in philosophy with Raheem Morris as the latest Rams defensive coordinator.

Wagner signed a five-year contract and he didn’t miss a single snap of last season until Week 17, but obviously Jones is the inside linebacker who Snead and McVay hope and expect to be around for many more years after Wagner is released from that deal.

But for this Top-20 Rams of 2022 series, we are only looking at this upcoming season, and this seems like a good time for Jones to check in. Will he be top-10 by the end of the year?

#17 - ILB Ernest Jones

Though he was certainly drafted with an opportunity to win a starting gig because Reeder, Young, and Travin Howard were the most notable names standing in his way, it would have still be impressive for Ernest Jones to be a Week 1 starter as a rookie.

A productive tackler over the previous two seasons at South Carolina (183 tackles, 10.5 TFL in 21 games), Jones posted a 4.65 40-yard dash at the combine, weighing in at 230 lbs.

Jones earned the right to call some plays in L.A.’s first preseason game of the year, but even playing in the preseason is a sign that McVay has someone else pegged to start in the regular season. But as the year went on, it became obvious that some change was needed and eventually, the Rams traded Young to the Broncos and then Jones made his first career start in Week 8 against the Houston Texans.

Jones recorded nine tackles, one tackle for a loss, one interception, shared in a sack, and helped lead L.A. to a 38-22 victory against an awful Texans team.

Though he never played in 100-percent of the snaps in any one game, Jones was a significant contributor over the next seven games prior to an ankle injury holding him out of the final two weeks.

Jones finished the regular season with 61 tackles, four passes defensed, two interceptions, and three QB hits.

He was back on the field for 22 snaps against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, then broke out in the Super Bowl for seven tackles, three QB hits, one sack, and one pass defensed over 57 snaps.

Though he is sure to take a little bit of playing time away from him, Jones is thrilled to be teammates with Wagner in his second NFL season, saying that it is the best thing that has happened to him so far in the league:

“Him being in the room every day and just watching him, it’s been amazing. It’s been the highlight of my career so far,” Jones said. “(I’m) learning from someone who has done everything that I aspire to do: Pro Bowls, All-Pros, Super Bowls. He’s everything that I want to (be) and more.”
Ernest Jones would rank higher on this list if we were talking about the top-20 Rams over the next five years. But at this time, he’s only been on the field for 440 snaps and we’ve yet to confirm how great he could really become. I believe he can reach the places he wants to go, the accolades, the rewards, the respect.

For the 2022 season, he can focus on proving that he’s on his way to those honors with another season like his rookie campaign but over a lot more playing time.

Can Ernest Jones become one of the best LBs in the NFL?

By CliffJackson@CliffJacksonn Aug 8, 2022,

In the 2021 NFL draft, the Rams decided they needed to address a need at linebacker by selecting Ernest Jones out of the University of South Carolina. Jones, who was a Butkus award semifinalist in his final season in college, was the captain of the Gamecock defense, as he led the team in tackles in both seasons he started at South Carolina.

Not many anticipate a 3rd round pick coming in and making noise early, however Jones did just that, as the Rams were so eager to get him on the field that they traded starting LB Kenny Young mid-season last year to allow Jones to become the new number 1 linebacker. Jones played very well, snagging an interception in his first game with extended action in Houston.

Jones would build on the momentum he built in Houston, posting a solid rookie campaign in which he tallied 61 tackles, 2 interceptions, with a sack and a tackle for loss. However, an injury in week 16 in Minnesota would cut his regular season short, sidelining Jones from week 17 all the way through the NFC Divisional round of the postseason. He would return for the NFC Championship, but only logged a little over 20 snaps in the game as he was still hindered a bit by the injury. Jones would start in the Super Bowl against Cincinnati and go on to play the best game of his young career, racking up 7 tackles to go along with 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

The fact that Ernest Jones seemed to get better as the year went on is extremely promising, especially because he played his best game on the grandest stage of them all. On top of all this promise and potential, the Rams brought in veteran, superstar linebacker Bobby Wagner, an 8-time all-pro and perennial hall-of-famer that will come in and only help in the growth of Ernest Jones. Ernest Jones will now have the chance to learn from one of the best to ever play the game, which I believe will lead to Jones becoming an all-pro linebacker in his own right.

Do you guys think Ernest Jones can become a top LB?

EJ is great imo, only issue I got with the above article about Bobby Wagz is the statement “Perennial Hall of Famer” just nitpicking tho.

Huge fan of Jones' potential. Working with one of the best to do could give him that push.

So excited to see these two settle in together. How many years has it been since we had a difference maker back there. And now maybe we have two. :thumbsup1:

The thing I think is so fun is that both players are so great "above the neck"... Jones ability/instinct to make plays.. just as a rookie.. was wild.

They aren't necessarily the hyper-athletic freaks you'd want or anything.. but they'll play faster than most and be in the right spot and make tackles.

No doubt. Wagner has been like Robinson too so far. Just seems serious about this season. Totally locked in. Never know how a season is going to go but man do we look good right now.

Especially since we knew the secondary would need to improve this year and of course Les digs up what looks like two guys who will at least give them a lot of options. So as long as the secondary is good we definitely seem destined for great things this year.

So did Tice.. article was in June ;)

Just giving you a hard time... I think Tice drew out the numbers of what most of us on here saw with Jones... an instinctual difference-maker.

Now... let's see him stay healthy.
