Edge rusher will be one of the Rams' most exciting camp battles

Cameron DaSilva

The Rams will have two new starting outside linebackers next season after losing Dante Fowler Jr. in free agency and cutting Clay Matthews, who still remains available. They filled one of the voids by signing Leonard Floyd, but the other spot remains very much up in the air.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though.

For as little proven talent as L.A. has opposite Floyd on the weakside, there’s also a lot of upside in the young players who will be competing for the job. In fact, the competition at outside linebacker will be one of the most exciting on the roster this summer and will go a long way toward determining how successful the Rams defense will be.

I have a great feeling about Ogbonnia Okoronkwo as a pass rush specialist, seem to be very close many times and the pressures are important too. Ebukam IMO, will be solid and does an excellent job against the run, hopefully, he steps up in this new defense to be a difference maker, week in & week out.

I loved Dante Fowler, loved him, since the Rams traded for him, IMO, he made impact plays as I also believe he will catapult the Atlanta Falcon defense, but the equalizer could be draft choice Terrell Lewis, he has everything you want in a pass rusher, let's hope he plays with a vengeance and does not play not to get hurt as @jrry32 communicated after the draft, jrry though he was playing to protect himself and that does not translate well as many of us watch that in Brandon Cooks when he came back from another concussion injury.

I like Cameron DaSilva I'm impressed in this article he includes Jachai Polite & Natrez Patrick too, however, I also believe in Staley's scheme, there will be a ton of Safety Blitzes and IMO, Taylor Rapp was tailor made for that role.

The position I look forward to the most is the LB battle both inside and out.

I don't worry about Obo's skills, I'm worried about him staying healthy. When he's on the field, you notice him. I don't expect any pass rush from Floyd to be honest, hopefully Polite and Lewis can form a rotation that's capable. Hoping for the best, but preparing for average results at edge.

Floyd, Ebukam, Obo, Lewis, Patrick. That is a young group all with big upside.

Fowler underperformed in the years prior to being a Ram, but played well for us. Very similar to Floyd, and I expect his best years to come for us. Being an edge rusher on our team means only facing 1-on-1s in almost every pass rushing situation. Combine that with our elite interior, and this front has a chance to be very, very, good. If one of our ILBs can step up and be a good player this defense will be scary.

It really is a wild card to what Polite brings. I was digging this morning, his story is a bit of a mystery.

It doesn’t sound good how quickly he moved on (released) by Jets then Seahawks.

But quiet so far? Mystery.

Jets third-rounder Jachai Polite ready for ‘fresh start’ on Rams practice squad

The Rams signed edge rusher Jachai Polite to the practice squad.

Polite, who played at Florida, was selected by the New York Jets in the third round of the draft in April. He did not make the roster after reportedly accruing fines for tardiness and other issues. The Seattle Seahawks signed him to the practice squad but released him Wednesday.

“Fresh start for sure,” Polite said. “You got to try to change for the better.”

Said McVay: “He’s going to be held to the same standards and expectations as everybody else in this building. ... Everybody has got a standard to uphold and he will be in the same line in terms of those things.”

The Rams have a history with former Florida pass rushers with bumpy starts to their pro careers. Dominque Easley played well for the Rams before his career ended because of knee injuries, and Dante Fowler has flourished.

“I’m moving forward by taking every opportunity I have and giving it my all,” Polite said. “The Rams gave me another opportunity and I’m going to make the most of it.”

Jets cut Jachai Polite | How did 3rd-round pick fall apart so quickly?

Scroll back about eight months. Check the mock drafts. You should find Jachai Polite’s name somewhere in the first round.

Rewind about four months. Draft day. The Jets select Polite, an edge rusher from the University of Florida with the No. 68 pick, in the third round.

Now, Polite is out of work and heading for the waiver wire.

What happened?

The Jets cut Polite on Saturday, ahead of the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline, a source confirmed to NJ Advance Media. The decision completed his rapid free fall from elite prospect to just another out-of-work rookie.

The slide began with Polite’s calamitous offseason, which featured him showing up to the NFL Combine at a significantly higher weight than normal and flaming out during interviews with teams around the league – then going public with his grievances about those conversations.

That’s what allowed the Jets to get Polite, who was roundly considered a first-round talent, in the middle of Day Two. At the time, general manager Mike Maccagnan believed that Polite was capable of righting the ship in Florham Park.

But that hope never materialized. Instead, Polite failed to make any noticeable impact this preseason, aside from a few scattered training camp practices. But even when those bright spots popped up, they came while Polite was working with – and against – third-team players.

He struggled to push his way forward on the depth chart and quite clearly struggled in adapting to defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ scheme, too.

Head coach Adam Gase has never thrown Polite under the bus. But it doesn’t take a psychic to read between the lines when he comments on the rookie and his progress.

“I think there’s been some good and there’s been sometimes where we get him running around the quarterback and that’s what we want to avoid doing,” Gase said Tuesday. "We just got to keep cleaning up his technique, I know those guys – we’re working hard at it, that whole room, of trying to play things exactly how Gregg wants it played.

“That’s why you see those guys that are kind of out there with that first group, they do what Gregg wants exactly the way he wants. That’s why (Jordan) Jenkins is so important, how (Brandon) Copeland does it, Harvey (Langi) and (Frankie) Luvu. Those guys do, and (Tarell) Basham, they do such a good job of trying to do exactly what the defense calls for.”

In other words: All those guys are doing it right. Polite wasn’t.

In hindsight, thought, Polite’s chances took a massive blow all the way back in June. That’s when the Jets fired Maccagnan and brought in new general manager Joe Douglas.

Suddenly, Polite didn’t have a GM who was willing to protect him in an effort to save his draft pick, like Maccagnan might have. Instead, the man deciding his fate had no real connection to him, no need to be loyal.

That’s how Polite went from potential superstar to the waiver wire – all in a matter of months.

Sounds as if Polite can ”get his mind right” he can be a gem, gotta say tho, if Pete Carroll couldn’t straighten him out it remains to be seen who can.

Gonna root for the kid to seize this opportunity and run with it.

Polite doesn’t fit the profile of being self motivated so it will be interesting to see how he improved himself this off season. No risk/High reward prospect at this point but man would it be great to have him come through. Oko has shown some but in limited capacity. I think we know what we have with Ebukam but he is a solid+ player. I think Patrick has to find a spot at ILB but something about him also intrigues. Finally i don’t think Lewis will hit his stride until late in the season but the Rams can take their time bringing him along. This will be a very compelling group to watch mature throughout the year.

Oko is the obvious guy who will get every chance to be our blindside rusher. He's been around long enough now to know the drill, and he had some really nice rushes here and there he just needs to be a little more consistent. I loved the pick at the time as he was one of my favorite players in that draft so thus far he's been a little disappointing to me. But yeah he should be the inside favorite at the start.

One thing here too that isn't discussed much is Shula's impact on those OLBs last season. He did a fantastic job with them and is going into year 2 with the group so yeah we might see one of them step up. I am extremely high on Shula and for my money him and Wes Phillips put on a fucking CLINIC in coaching last season.

I'm looking for Okoronkwo to have a breakout type year. Have always liked his game and technique, now he has some experience under his belt and appears to be in great shape after earlier battling injuries. Ready to go off.

I look for a very good rotation.

Floyd-Starter that can move around. Could be in coverage a lot and moved in the middle.

Ebu-He probably starts. He did good playing around 40% of defensive snaps last year.
Obo-Has the moves. Should be in the rotation.

Look out for these two!

Polite-All he needs is to have his head right. Didn't like interviewing at the combine except liking to talking to the Rams. The guy can play. Has a motor and quick short speed. Can play standing or in three point stance.

Lewis-All he needs is to stay healthy. He played all around at Alabama. IIRC even at safety. He has more size and still has the quick twitch needed for a pass rusher. Imagine 6'5" around 260-265 Lbs with a massive 83" wingspan He can play two point and three point stance while being able to move around the in the front seven.

Lawler-Showed some potentail before being injured. Has some pass rush moves and size.
Patrick-Will be fighting for a roster spot. Showed rushing potential in preseason.

Yea a lot of people are saying they're excited for Polite this year, and I don't know why. Hes not a very good athlete for his size and people see the 3rd round draft status and assume that means he should be a good player. The fact he was cut from the Jets and Seahawks already says a lot. Teams rarely cut talented edge rushers even if they have off the field issues. If he turns out to be something great, but I think all the other players mentioned offer more than enough at the edge.

The more I think about the Edge options opposite Floyd, the more excited I get.

I, too, think that at least a couple of guys not named Lewis are gonna pleasantly surprise us early on in this Staley D.

By midseason we just might see Lewis seizing that starting position and becoming a beast.

Fingers crossed.

Ebukam is a SAM backer which means he's probably their primary outside blitzer. But in regards to starting edge players my thoughts are:

Floyd replaces Fowler
Lewis replaces Brockers on passing downs
Jonah Williams backs up Floyd as he's what you want in rotation with Ebukam as well
Okoronkwo plays behind Lewis and Brockers. Ogbonnia lacks the speed to play a true OLB and at this point looks like simply depth at DE. Basically I think Williams replaces Okoronkwo on the depth chart.

So I think it will be:

SAM - Ebukam, Williams
Jack - Floyd, Williams
DE - Brockers (run downs), Lewis (pass rusher), Okoronkwo

This would make their nickel defense look like:

DE - Lewis
NT - Robinson
DT - Donald
JACK - Floyd
ILB - Young
SAM - Ebukam

NCB - Burgess
RCB - Ramsey
LCB - Long
SS - Rapp
FS - Johnson

This gives them speed (4.6) at both edges and Power inside with AD and Robinson. They also would have speed with contain and flat coverage with Ebukam (4.5) and short zone coverage by Young (4.6). Short to mid zone coverage with Rapp (4.6) and man coverage with the CBs. Johnson in single-high safety coverage. IMO this would be their base nickel and it gives Staley all kinds of options up front with the front 7 and in the secondary. This defense is much faster across the board this year.

With Polite there really is nothing to lose. Didn't have to use a draft spot or sign a free agent deal with more money. If he doesn't work out, well, just move on. But he certainly does have the talent. A nice first step with determination to get to the ball.

In those highlights what impressed me the most was that one screen where he went for the wrong guy on a fake. He just kept running and eventually caught the guy downfield. That kind of stuff is what I like to see. These guys aren't gonna be wreaking havoc every game. But have a high motor and keep playing till the whistle blows are the kind of guys I want.

I would love to see that but I don't expect it by any means. Lewis is a freak and all, but he was available when we drafted him for a reason: he not only was hurt for much of his college career but also his film is underwhelming, where he doesn't show that talent level consistently snap to snap. So expecting him to come in and be a quick study might be a bit of a reach. I mean anything's possible. But is it likely?

I'm expecting solid edge play overall. I think we'll play the run quite well and be mediocre on the rush, but AD will help there as always. If it's more than that, though, I'm good with that too. (y)
