(Positions are ranked by tier, with tier one representing positions with greatest need of solidification and tiers two through tier four being comprised of positions of decreasing levels of need).
Tier One Areas of Need
Outside Linebacker
The Rams are set at weakside linebacker with Jo-Lonn Dunbar returning for his second season in St. Louis. Last fall, Dunbar posted a productive campaign with 90 tackles, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, four deflected passes and two interceptions. Dunbar – versatile enough to play all three spots in a 4-3 scheme – could move to strongside if needed. That said, the cupboard is potentially bare opposite of wherever Dunbar lines up as St. Louis currently sits with just 2012 undrafted free agent Sammy Brown and 2011 seventh-round selection Jabara Williams in the fold.
In the NFC West, adding an outside linebacker with speed appears paramount when considering St. Louis will face Seattle’s Russell Wilson and San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick four times per season.
Some intriguing premium possibilities (rounds one through three) include Alec Ogletree of Georgia, Kansas State’s Arthur Brown, Khaseem Green of Rutgers and Missouri’s Xavier Gooden. Greene, for one, is set to visit Rams Park prior to the draft.
Point blank, if the Rams can nail the pick at outside linebacker the team’s front seven will stand as one of the elite in all of football. That, of course, would give the Rams a legit chance at vaulting into the league’s top 10 defenses in regards to points allowed, up from No. 14 in 2012 and No. 26 two seasons ago.
