Does Joe Burrow hope the Bengals don’t draft him?

The puzzle pieces are piling up. And it’s not all that hard to see what Joe Burrow may be trying to assemble.

Burrow may be thinking about trying to get the Bengals to not draft him — or to get someone else to trade up and get him. And the evidence is becoming more and more clear.

In the aftermath of winning the national championship, Burrow said that he’s happy to play for any team that will pay him to play football. Which presumably includes the Bengals (although owner Mike Brown would surely love to get Burrow to keep playing for free.)

Then came the Super Bowl week shot across the bow from former Bengals No. 1 overall pick Carson Palmer, who went on the record to say the Bengals aren’t trying to win a Super Bowl. (Based on Palmer’s time with the Bengals and with other teams, it’s safe to say he knows.) Palmer’s assessment became more ominous when it quickly came out that Palmer’s brother, Jordan, will be helping get Burrow ready for the draft.

Next, Joe Burrow appeared on The Dan Patrick Show. And Burrow didn’t reiterate his “whoever wants to pay me money to play the game of football, I’ll play for ’em, it doesn’t matter to me” line. Instead, Burrow said this: “You want to go No. 1. But you also want to go to a great organization that is committed to winning. Committed to winning Super Bowls.”

So the brother of Burrow’s private coach, who was a first overall pick of the Bengals, says the Bengals aren’t committed to winning Super Bowls. And then Burrow says that he wants to play for a team that is committed to winning Super Bowls. Sure, there’s nothing to see here.

Earlier this week, former Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who is also part of Team Burrow, seemed to encourage the Bengals to take what they can get from the Dolphins, who hold pick No. 5 — and whose owner wants Burrow.

Most recently, Joe Burrow’s dad had a chance to remove all doubt regarding whether Burrow wants the Bengals if the Bengals want Burrow. Instead, Jimmy Burrow simply said, “Not sure where that information is coming from. We are all excited that Joe has put himself in a position to be considered as a possible high draft choice.”

The information is coming from Carson Palmer saying the Bengals aren’t committed to winning a Super Bowl and the hiring of Jordan Palmer and Joe Burrow’s sudden pivot from not being picky to wanting a team that is committed to winning a Super Bowl. And the information will continue to have credibility until Joe Burrow comes out and says, “I want to play for the Bengals, if the Bengals draft me.”

Until then, it’s fair to wonder whether Burrow is hoping that the Bengals don’t trade him, or that the Bengals trade the pick. It’s too early, however, to think that Burrow would stiff arm the Bengals. As Peter King (who covered the Bengals in the 1980s) said earlier this week on PFT Live, Mike Brown would be inclined to dig in and force Burrow to sit out the full year and re-enter the draft in 2021.

Even if Burrow would perhaps like to play for someone other than the Bengals, it could be a stretch to say he’d turn down a fully-guaranteed four-year contract worth more than $36 million, wait a year, and re-enter the process with no guarantee that he’d be the top pick.

So the Bengals have the power here. And if they take Burrow with the intent of keeping, Burrow’s choices are getting paid a lot of money to play football or getting paid nothing to wait a year and hope that things work out differently, with no guarantee that they will.

Bengal Ownership reminds me of the Rams before the move to St. Louis and they gave Mike Brown a beautiful new stadium in Cincinnati. I remember a John Shaw quote after the Rams won the Super Bowl "Well, you can't win the Super Bowl every year." the Bengals seem to be suffering from the same complex a winning record and a post season appearance is good enough to please the masses and I truly believe that is how the front office feels.

Joe Burrow is a great guy and I'm ecstatic for his success at LSU and with some calling him a one year wonder is incorrect, in 2018 you could see the difference in LSU with Burrow at QB, they were different and Orgeron was smart enough to realize what he had and went out and hired Joe Brady to make Burrow and the offense even better, mission accomplished.

I had an opportunity to meet Joe Burrow in Columbus and he's no ordinary Joe and anyone that is around him can understand what an outstanding person and leader he is both inside the locker room and outside. Burrow is an Ohio kid and the opportunity to play in your home state and propel a downtrodden franchise is a great story and if anyone can accomplish this task, it Burrow. The Bengals and Katie Blackburn, who apparently calling the shots, might feel they have to go all in because Burrow will be able to do for their fan base and in the community as well.

I think they made a huge mistake hiring Zac Taylor, he's way over his head and could not even assemble a decent staff. He had several guys turn him down for the DC job like Dennis Allen (who had originally agreed to join him) of the Saints and Todd Grantham of Florida besides a couple of others before going after Lou Anarumo who was the Giants DB Coach, who just wanted to be a DC and his unit showcased that in his first year.

I feel bad for the situation that Burrow is going into, I have more confidence in the Brown organization then the Bengals because I truly believe want to win. But the Bengals have some pieces with Green coming back at WR and Joe Mixon at RB and if Taylor is truly and offensive savant, he should be able to make it work, but that offensive line is a mess and I don't believe their defense will be able to stop anyone.

I believe after Patrick Mahomes won the Super Bowl and the Rams appearing in the previous one, teams now want to draft Quarterbacks and try to win with their first contract. It gives you the cap flexibility to improve in other areas before paying them and I truly hope the Bengals commit, but IMO, history shows us under Mike Brown they won't. I would love for the Panthers to trade up and draft Burrow and reunite him with Joe Brady and under the direction of Head Coach Matt Rhule although that would make another NFC team even better.

Again, the Bengals will not trade this pick because of Burrow being an Ohio kid and the sizzle he will create for fans to turnout in droves, so I wish Joe the best of luck and he's the best QB they've had since Carson Palmer and look for Andy Dalton to wind up in New England if Tom Brady goes to Dallas or Los Angeles.

The problem here is the Dolphins and most other teams drafting at the top are the usual suspects with enormous flaws in their organizations. It's ugly gentlemen...

1. Bengals - bad owner who has made some strides but still, poor front office and coach in over his head.

2. Redskins - bad owner who is probably looking for a yes-man to be his GM, and a head coach who is plodding at best in his offensive prowess (next generation Jeff Fisher IMO). Also and this is just me, but I never have liked the team name (feel it should be changed) and would not want to play in that uniform.

3. Lions - corporate type owner who needs a great GM, but a GM who is a scout that has no clue how to actually assemble a team, defensive head coach going into year 3 without a winning season as of yet and probably won't win with a rookie QB not good.

4. Giants - GM Gettleman is mediocre at best, and his lack of GM talent is demonstrated in his recent head coach hire of a special teams guy based on the great foot rub he gave him in his interview. Strong roster btw with some good pieces but going nowhere IMO.

5. Dolphins - GM is in over his head with a bazillion picks in a very good draft what could go wrong, head coach might have been a good hire but roster has a ton of holes. This org looks like it's at a crossroads but the guys running the show will likely get the same results.

6. Chargers - Broke owner who doesn't care about winning, GM with a long track record of not being able to find his ass with either hand, and a head coach who is in over his head not to mention probably gonna be fired after another losing season which he'd have with a rookie QB.

I don't know that forcing your way to another team in this draft would be a good idea. Maybe it would be better to just go to the Bengals and help them raise the bar.

Trade the Bengals Goff and Cooks for the No. 1 overall and 2 x 6th round picks...

I think out of all those teams I trust the Dolphins to succeed the most out of them. That’s saying something though! Lol

It would be nice if the AFC East finally got competitive after 2 fucking decades!

Den, I have to disagree with you here a little.

As an OSU fan who lives in Columbus, I watched every snap Burrow ever took with the Buckeyes including the Spring Games - he was always just a guy. His first year at LSU he may have taken steps, but nowhere near what he did this past year. He deserves all the accolades in the world for this year - but that doesn't mean he'll be a great NFL QB.

He might be - don't get me wrong - but I'm very happy that the Rams aren't the ones facing this dilemma, and if I were the Bengals I would be taking the actual best player in the draft - and the best defensive player I've seen in a long time - Chase Young.

We will agree to disagree as I concur at Columbus he seemed like an ordinary Joe, however, his first year at LSU being the starter you could see the upside and how much better the LSU offense was compared to the past years and then with the addition of Joe Brady, he was able to even take Burrow to new heights and I will always bet on somebody who is smart and good athlete and is able to lead plus his ability to extend plays with his legs I believe will be an asset and I would have no reservations drafting him whatsoever.

I’d trade Goff for Burrow in an instant, no blue font.
I would too, with zero hesitation. That said, I do think we can win it all and even be a perennial contender with Goff.

Would take Goff over Burrow in a heartbeat. Goff improved every year in college; Burrow has been good only one year.

Goff is a twenty-five-year-old QB who has played three starting years in the NFL; Burrow is twenty-three and has not played a down in the NFL yet.

While Burrow is a solid QB - and if he goes to Cincy, they'll be lucky to have him - I would not hesitate to take Goff over him.

Goff never had a year like Burrow in college and against mostly inferior talent compared to what Burrow faces in the SEC.

Burrow ran the spread last year but has had experience with a Pro Style offense already unlike Goff in college who had just the Bear-raid offense.

As far as comparing the two as prospects in my mind it's not even close, I'd take Burrow and his rookie contract. I'd love to see Snead trade to obtain that pick but tbh it seems highly likely for it to happen.

I feel very bad Burrow, Cincy outside of the Chargers might be 2 of the worst teams to play for in regards to will to win.

I'm not totally down on Goff, I just don't see us having major success with him long term. It's going to be similar to how it was with Bulger.

I hope your right man, from what I've seen last season in particular it's really made me change my tune about him.
