Weddle seemed more effective early in the year. He was making a lot of tackles closer to the LOS. I think he slowed down as the season went on. Another year older will make him slower. Too much money for a backup and too slow to start.
There's also the risk that cutting last year's signings, many at below market, make it less likely that the Rams will be viewed as a good place to sign at a discount. So the team needs to be careful on deciding to cut still useful players.
From comments that other players have made, I think these guys and their agents are well aware of the Rams cap situation. If the Rams had 50 million in cap space and were cutting guys, yeah, their agents are going to take note for the future, but it's very obvious that the Rams have to make cap related moves. Also, the way that the Rams handle the cuts will leave an impression as well. If they cut a veteran like Weddle early in the process instead of waiting until FA is basically over, he has a much better chance of getting a new deal elsewhere. There's also the risk that cutting last year's signings, many at below market, make it less likely that the Rams will be viewed as a good place to sign at a discount. Was it really a discount if he was not as effective as the Rams thought he would be? His contract was set up for the Rams to cut him without significant cost to cut him/retire in year two.
Rams save $4.25 Million in cap space if he is cut. How do you see him fitting in next year with JJ coming back and Rapp in his second year?
Are you saying you would keep Weddle?

That's pretty typical for a safety. Rapp has 93 in less playing time. Johnson had 115 last year. Weddle's $5 million in cap space is going to be tough to pass up when it comes time to cut players. Maybe he is tired of moving and doesn't think he'll make much on the market. If that's the case, he might take a pay cut.
