Did anyone else on this board realize that Weddle had over 100 tackles, this season?

I had no clue that he had been that active until I saw the end of the season awards given out this past week.

Probably a hundred tackles that would have been big gains for the opposition.

I like Weddle much more than many on this board. I’m not surprised. He made many tackles that if he doesn’t, it’s a TD.

I think Weddle would provide good leadership and depth next year. I believe it is time to move on from Matthews and all his missed tackles. We have too many younger options.

Many are JL tackles, stop settling for mediocrity. Either 20 yards past the line of scrimmage or on throws that should have been defensed. Rewatch the tape, it won't lie. His coverage as a FS and captaining this defense are vastly overrated.

Weddle seemed more effective early in the year. He was making a lot of tackles closer to the LOS. I think he slowed down as the season went on. Another year older will make him slower. Too much money for a backup and too slow to start.

There's 10 guys on other teams practice squads or walking the street that could've put up a better effort than Weddle did the last 2 months . Stats are misleading. 0 INT's and I can remember a handful of easy pick chances that he took poor angles on . Watch the tape like someone else mentioned . He sticks out like a sore thumb . No way they pay him next year .

That's pretty typical for a safety. Rapp has 93 in less playing time. Johnson had 115 last year. Weddle's $5 million in cap space is going to be tough to pass up when it comes time to cut players. Maybe he is tired of moving and doesn't think he'll make much on the market. If that's the case, he might take a pay cut.

There's also the risk that cutting last year's signings, many at below market, make it less likely that the Rams will be viewed as a good place to sign at a discount. So the team needs to be careful on deciding to cut still useful players.

Was it really a discount if he was not as effective as the Rams thought he would be? His contract was set up for the Rams to cut him without significant cost to cut him/retire in year two.

Rams save $4.25 Million in cap space if he is cut. How do you see him fitting in next year with JJ coming back and Rapp in his second year?

Are you saying you would keep Weddle?

From comments that other players have made, I think these guys and their agents are well aware of the Rams cap situation. If the Rams had 50 million in cap space and were cutting guys, yeah, their agents are going to take note for the future, but it's very obvious that the Rams have to make cap related moves. Also, the way that the Rams handle the cuts will leave an impression as well. If they cut a veteran like Weddle early in the process instead of waiting until FA is basically over, he has a much better chance of getting a new deal elsewhere.

Rapp was effective playing up not deep.
When he was asked to cover in a more typical S role he struggled.
Johnson, Rapp, Christian and a fourth.
I could see the Rams being comfortable with that. Or they may well bring him back and measure his contributions differently than fans.
I think he was largely solid but did seem to fade down the stretch. He just didn’t make splash plays. That’s fine. The idea was to get away from the endless huge pass plays we saw last year. With a few exceptions, that had happened.

That's what happens when your team struggles against the run.
Rapp had 90 something with less playing time and JJ had 115 last year. All that tells me is our LB play is sub par against the run. Low and behold...

I would think long and hard before cutting him. It might be necessary, but he was neither as good for the whole season as the Rams had hoped nor as bad as some here say.

In terms of whether he gave the Rams a discount - yes, he did. He almost certainly could have gotten a bit more at the very least elsewhere, likely in a state with lower taxes. Vet free agents have been looking to the Rams to sign, and that's a good thing. And Weddle is likely to be quite useful for the Rams, even if not a true starter (but getting a lot of playing time as one of the top3 safeties). Oh, and as insurance. Cutting him when overall and as he was used he was still effective is not a no brainer.

This. I saw him running up making tackles busting up potential screens here and there early in the season. Seemed to drop off after JJ was hurt, but then again the older age factors in on tailing off after midseason which can happen to other older players like Clay and Whit.

His contract essentially amounts to a one year deal as $500,000. in 2020 dead money costs isn't much incentive to keep him around. jmo.

As others have said, his deal was a typical veteran one year deal with what is essentially a second year option that teams rarely pick up. He'll be cut for sure. But wouldn't be surprised to see him back for less if he is up to that though. With JJ coming back in a contract year and Rapp quickly ascending as one of our best players it is an easy $5ish million to put towards Littleton/Fowler/or Ramsey though.

I think it's time to let him go. JJ and Rapp got to soak up some knowledge and now we can free up some $. Maybe keep Christian as the backup if hes affordable.

This!

Weddle was pretty damn effective early in the season but when he got injured and missed some time you could see a drop off after that point and it wasn’t gradual.

I like the ideal behind Weddle but I don’t see him with us next year, especially scrapping together some dollars for Littleton or Fowler, plus our depth is good at S. He’s a goner.
