In essence, ED still hasn’t learned from his prediction that Sean Mannion would be preferred over Goff by McVay two years ago. I mean, I loved him as our running back and like when he argues w Skip Bayless as a Rambassador, but Dickerson just can’t stop discounting Jared for some unknown reason. Could it be that Jim Everett replaced ED as the face of the franchise, so young QB’s have to go to multiple Pro Bowls to get his respect?

Sure, Eric....Goff hasn’t proven enough. Let him prove it again so he gets 45mil/year instead of 39 or 40. Outstanding thought process

BTW, wouldn’t Mannion be cheaper?

I wouldn't really say he's bagging on him, he just cant put his RB bias aside. Gurley has already been paid, the offense runs through Goff, Dickerson just doesn't pay close enough attention to the details.

I heard ED being interviewed by Dan Patrick, and when asked about whether Jared Goff was a franchise QB or not. He pretty much said that it was too soon for him to tell and to ask him next year...He generalized it by saying he thinks that way about QB's in general. That many crown QB's too soon with that label.

Really? ED bags on Jared Goff? What kind of trash ass writing is this? Fucking taking out of context hype.

If you listen to that interview he does nothing of the sort.

Ps He said Mannion was more ready than Goff a few years ago to play or start. And that is true ala Fishers interview the other day when he said they took it extremely slow with Jared.

At some point in his career, I hope Mannion gets to start 3 or 4 game in row, then we can truly see what he can do with a starting offense. So far he really hasn't had that chance.

I hope that chance comes with the Seachickens.

Dickerson would've loved to have Goff on his team as a player. Looking over the list of QBs ED was saddled with his whole career......yeesh.

Yep, Mannion played in a pro-style offense during his Oregon State days while Goff played the Bear Raid in Cal. The system's QBs played at though doesn't necessarily translate to success though and would argue that Cal's variant of the Bear Raid gave QBs some prep in how to handle an NFL playbook since it requires QBs to go beyond the first read when dropping back.

Respect ED, but does he watch the games ?

Jared didnt have the greatest superbowl but he has been tremendous career since mcvay showed up . Pay the man , cheaper now than in the future.

I would love to see stats over the last 3 years, guaranteed jared is top 7 or 8

Have you seen the Ram's cap situation? Their estimated total cap space right now is MINUS $14.5 M.

So where is all this money coming from to pay for Goff's raise? If they don't re-sign Peters and Whitworth retires that will free up $24.7M along with Goff's current cap hit of $8.9 M they will have their $34M to pay Goff next year. With Talib likely to leave that will free up another $8 M in cap that can be applied towards Fowler next year as I'm sure he will have a breakout year.

Whitworth, Peters, and Talib account for around $33M in cap space. It's why they didn't extend Fowler, because they simply didn't have the cap to do so. When the season starts they probably will adjust things to have about $5M in cap space which is really minimal for a season.

I’d love to give Goff a 6 year minimum contract because by the end of it these contracts going to be 45+. Sucks, seems like a lot of great players gone.

Not sure where you got that estimated cap space from. Over the cap shows them at an estimated nearly $50 million cap space for 2020 - before resigning any free agents. That's with Goff getting a raise to $22.7 million. Any extension is not going to raise his cap hit that much in 2020. Now, I am assuming that Whitworth is gone, unless he takes a big reduction in his salary - since he nearly retired after last season, and the Rams have been drafting OL, I think it's reasonable to believe him gone in 2020. I expect the Rams to be happy with Peters gone and a 3rd round comp pick for him. I suspect they will use some of that $50 million in cap space to resign Talib - based on his play in 2019 of course. Fowler will likely get a bit of a pay raise - but remember, they have nearly $50 million to spend. They won't sign everybody they would like, but we've known that all along. Even if they take some of the cap hit for resigning Goff in 2020 - it won't be that much.

Basically, while there will be losses in player personnel in the long run for paying Goff, I think it will be manageable in 2020. The rest will depend on how the draftees the last few seasons perform, and in the long run how the picks they get for losing players like Peters perform.

Cap Hits 2019
Whitworth: $16.6 M
Peters: $9 M
Talib: $8 M
Fowler: $12 M
Goff: $8.8 M

Goff extended contract value 2019: $30.6 M
Fowler contract market value 2019: $9 M

So they overpaid Fowler to keep him I understand that. He will be looking at probably $14-$15M/yr in 2020.
Goff should continue to play at an elite level so his market value will probably be about $32-33M/yr.

So it's simply business. The three expiring contracts then give the team the money to extend Goff and Fowler to expected contract market values.

So you're citing contract values that don't exist for 2020? And miss applying Goff's contract value - which is NOT $30.6 million for 2019, but rather is 8.8 million for 2019, and most of the value you've cited is for 2020?

Before you pontificate on cap hits, please learn about the CBA and what constitutes a cap hit for 2019, and what is the cap hit for 2020. Oh, and actually know what players are being paid this season. Again, the nearly $50 million in cap space that OTC cites for 2020 includes Goff's extension, which is NOT $30 million, but rather a bit over $22 million. Your figures don't actually represent the Rams 2020 space. For 2019 the Rams have about $6 million in space.

Now undoubtedly there will be players the Rams would like to keep or sign next offseason that they will have run out of space for, but your posts show zero awareness of this. NFL Salary caps are complex, but there are online sources to help.

Oh, and btw - if Fowler has as good a season in 2019 as many expect, $14-15 million in 2020 is small. For what it's worth - he's getting $14 million THIS season. Not the $9 million you cite above in one place, and 12 million in another place. Making up numbers does not help your argument. They will pay him, though. The Rams have been dividing their team into expensive players and rookie contracts. I expect Fowler to be one of the expensive players - Peters to be a free agent instead, yielding a comp pick for a future player at a position of value at that pick.
