If he stays healthy that'd be great.

DeSean Jackson is entering his first season with the Los Angeles Rams at the age of 34, hoping to add some much-needed explosiveness and speed to an offense that was lacking big plays last season. Given his age and the Rams’ salary cap situation, Jackson only signed a one-year deal, but he feels he could play another half-decade in this offense.

He says his body feels great and he loves the fit in Sean McVay’s scheme, to the point where he believes he could play in this offense for another five years.

“Body’s feeling great,” he said Monday. “I feel Coach McVay, Coach Eric Yarber, Reggie (Scott) and the training staff, they’re doing a good job of keeping me fresh, but at the same time letting me get my work in. Basically, the best thing to do is get out here and just fly around so for where I’m at in year 14, I feel pretty good, man. Still going – I was just telling somebody else I could probably play another five years in this offense.”

Jackson has been prone to injuries throughout his career, especially in the last couple of years. He’s played just eight games in the last two seasons and hasn’t played a full 16-game schedule since 2013 when he was a Pro Bowler.

Wide receivers typically don’t play until they’re 40, but Jackson’s statement about playing another five years is just one example of how well the Rams take care of their players – as evidenced by their lack of major injuries over the years, specifically soft-tissue ones.

“I think they have a science to it. Just knowing how to get work in, how to take care of your players, your veteran players, not working them too hard, not overworking them,” Jackson said of why he feels he could play five years with the Rams. “When I speak on that just basically the workload. Being able to come to practice and being in training camp, but still get good work and not overworking you. So that’s what I talk about. I’ve been other places where you get ran in the ground. I’m not going to speak specifically on them, but they work you very hard. So, for here, I feel like the workload is great. I’m able to get good work in, but still feel not too overworked.”

It’s no surprise guys love playing for McVay in L.A., with this being one of the major reasons why.

DS Jax really looks good out there. And he's not just being used to fly down the sidelines for long passes. He's been lining up in several different formations, getting the rock in jet-sweeps, catching passes over the middle from the slot. He's the fastest player on the team.

The guy has a smile on his face all the time and looks as good as he was in Philly.

Great signing by the Rams.

I don’t see five years. But if he can play 2-3 years, it makes selection of Tutu even more puzzling to me. An additional edge or iOL sure would have been nice.

if only healthy for this season a win, anything else just gravy, but I'm not counting on much longer than just this season, hope he can last 17 games

I've been saying I think Jackson could go two years for the Rams. I didn't think it would be one and done. Reggie and his staff would help keep him healthy plus Jackson playing where he grew up is a big factor. He seems more mature and now has his family and friends to show off to. Stay tuned for some big plays.

He may be planning on up to playing 5 years longer, that doesn't mean the Rams are willing to pay a guy who can't stay on the field as the years go by. At this moment he's a one year wonder, if he can stay healthy (odds against it), maybe two years max, IMO.

I don’t take statements like that as making a prediction, more of a complement to the organization.
We all know his history and why he got a one year deal. If he balls out and is suited up most of the season, consider other options and give him another one year deal if it makes sense. No way I give him a multi-year contract.

Just survive the season first DJax. Let's start there.

This is looking like it might be a slam dunk signing. But 17 games is a long season and what matters is gonna be roster health going into the playoffs. Receivers are a deep position now but still we are gonna need quite a few oft-injured types to be healthy to give us our best chance to hoist some hardware.

Slam dunk is right!!! I still see Jackson, and speed generally, as the absolute key to the Rams' passing game.

Reports from our posters, players, and coaches seem to confirm that Jackson's speed is still elite. Lack of speed was a big reason in McVay's view why our offense last year was missing explosive plays.

Jackson also undoubtedly has elite skills as a receiver. Last year we had a couple of receivers, now gone, who no one would ever say that about.

The Rams need more than possession receivers, even really good ones, in order for Stafford to play at his highest level. Right now it is still looking like Harris will get his chance too while Tutu hopefully can catch up after his covid protocol encounter.

But Djax is the proven receiver and seems to still have the considerable skills he has shown in the past. If he can stay healthy this year this signing may look like a steal and hopefully a turning point for the offense.

If he wins a super bowl it would be a great way to hang them up.

Realistically his speed is already beginning the decline at 34.

There is straight line speed. Then their is quickness, change in direction and feel for the coverage. You can’t teach speed but the other attributes come with experience. I think there is a chance he can play beyond this year but all I want is for him to challenge the coverage at the top this year.

Actually, we need him to last 20 games this season - preferably all wins.

I was thinking the same. IMO this year is his window with us. Because if they hit on Tutu we're gonna have a younger and faster version of him sitting at WR4 pushing for more snaps and looks. That's not gonna be an attractive situation to DJax.

This year he should get every chance to do what he can do. He'll get some looks deep, on the jet, and everything in between. Hope he takes full advantage too.
