ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - The city’s Convention and Visitor’s Commission has offered the Rams a new proposal to upgrade the Edward Jones Dome. The latest proposal doesn’t represent any breakthrough in the negotiations, but merely fine-tunes an offer from the CVC to the Rams that the Rams have already rejected.
This newest offer changes two parts of the earlier CVC proposal. Instead of a “fan experience” area build across the street from the Dome in Behr Park and connected to the Dome by a walkway, this offer instead takes the fan experience area and integrates it into the Dome itself by building an addition to the structure on the northwest corner, at the corner of Broadway and Carr.
The second upgrade would involve adding more of the corporate Club Seat suites that the Rams and other NFL teams desire. The CVC had previously said that adding more Club Seats was structurally impossible. But in this new proposal, the main scoreboard is re-configured in a way to turn it into a four-sided scoreboard, visible from all parts of the Dome. By doing that, the CVC says the scoreboard area will take up less space, and will allow for the addition of some Club Seats.
Neither of these design tweaks is anywhere close to the Rams counter-offer to the CVC. That proposal, already rejected by the city, called for a total re-build of parts of the 18 year old Dome at an estimated cost of roughly $700 million. Under the terms of the Rams lease, the team is free to leave St. Louis in January, 2015, if the Dome isn’t among the “top tier” facilities in the NFL.
The city and the Rams are now in arbitration before three independent arbitrators. If the two sides can’t agree by the end of this year, the agreement says the lease will be considere4d terminated.
