ok, so i finally got the chance to see the play again. the ball came out a full 2 yards after he began being forced backwards. now i always thought that once forward progress was stopped the play was over, which is how the refs ruled on the play. not sure why the commentators don't know that rule, they only commentate on the game every week. a very obvious call which was called correctly.

I completely agree. The more questionable fumble was the play before. Looked like 5 Cardinals were in on that football and somehow Havenstein outmuscled them all to recover it :yess:

I disagree. He coughed it up way too early for forward progress to be called.

How so? The ball wasn't punched out until he was moving backwards. The ref put his foot where forward progress ceased and had his hand up in the air. Play over.

I don't think it was a black and white call. Refs could have not called forward progress but there's enough to support their decision to. I think the better reason for them calling it was that the whistle blew and no Ram went after the ball when it came out.(as far as I could tell)

Appears to me the only discussion should be about whether the ref called forward progress stopped too quickly or not. He called it before the fumble occurred so the "no fumble" call was correct. I think we (finally) caught a break because he called the play stopped so quickly.

The play isn't over when forward progress is stopped, it's over when the refs call it dead afaik. I didn't think I heard a whistle, but if the refs say they called it, I'm absolutely not going to complain.
