Ezekiel Elliott is officially holding out, reportedly looking to land NFL record-setting deal from Cowboys

After watching Ezekiel Elliott skip the team flight to training camp on Thursday, the Cowboys were hoping that he might show up for the start of camp on Friday morning, but that didn't happen, which means we officially have a holdout on our hands.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones met with the media on Friday and he clearly wasn't very thrilled with the fact that Elliott decided not to show.

"We expect everybody that's under contract to be here at camp," Jones said. "They've agreed to be here. ... He's late. We have officially reported, and so he's a non-report."

Jones expected Elliott to show up to training camp because the Cowboys running back still has two years left on his rookie contract, a deal that's scheduled to pay him $3.9 million in 2019 and $9.1 million in 2020. Since Elliott's under contract, the Cowboys now have the option of fining him $40,000 for every day that he misses camp. However, it's unclear if the Cowboys will actually fine him. Jones was vague when he was asked specifically about that possibility.

"[The CBA] certainly provides for that," Jones said of possibly fining Elliott. "I've not ever made it a practice of getting into the details of how we execute our agreements, or how we operate within our agreements, but his agreement provides for fines and it's certainly doable under the CBA."

Jones also said he wouldn't be giving daily updates on Elliott's contract or any other negotiations.

"I do want to make the point, we will not be giving updates on any of our contractual status of our players," Jones said. "The last thing we want to get into is a daily update of contracts."

If the Cowboys want Elliott to report to camp, they're going to have to write a monstrous check. According to Yahoo Sports, Elliott is looking for a deal bigger than the four-year, $57 million contract that the Rams gave Todd Gurley. If the Cowboys cave in and give Elliott a contract that size, it would make him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. Gurley's deal included $45 million in guaranteed money and an average annual value of $14.375 million, which are both records.

Gurley was given his deal in 2018, when he still had two years left on his rookie contract, which is the exact same situation Elliott is currently in. The problem for Elliott is that he doesn't really have any leverage from a negotiation standpoint. The Cowboys own his rights for two more seasons, and if you include the franchise tag, they could conceivably retain his rights for the next four years without ever offering him a new deal.

If the Cowboys were to let him play out his rookie contract (2019, 2020), then tag him in both 2021 and 2022, that would only cost them roughly $40 million for those four years ($10 million per year), which means Elliott has to convince them he's worth an extra $17.5 million on top of that.

The bottom line is that Elliott is holding out because he feels he's underpaid, and it's hard to argue with him, considering he's led the NFL in rushing for two of the past three seasons. The good news for the Cowboys is that the two sides are talking. Executive vice president Stephen Jones told the media on Friday that he's currently having contract discussions with Elliott's agent.

Stephen Jones is going to be a busy man during training camp, and that's because, besides Elliott, the Cowboys will also be working on long term deals for both Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper.

Without a doubt the Rams turned the RB market upside down. Compared to Freeman's deal (the highest paid RB at the time) Rams gave Gurley way too much money.

The Rams did avoid the messy hold out that the Cowboys face. Elliott doesn't have leverage as was stated in the article. He will have to report at some point this year. I doubt he holds out and misses any games. He is trying to get a head start on his new deal.

I'm glad we don't have any more of that drama this year. The Rams are focused one thing. Checking that last box in February next year.

I don't see this as long term holdout, Elliott has leverage as without Zeke the Cowboys are pedestrian at best and they feel this year is their year, so Elliott will be there when it counts, but Stephen and Jerry have some trepidation in paying Elliott because of off the field concerns, but in the end, they will pay him and I am looking forward to kicking their ass again in post season.

And hopefully when they finally pay him, those off the field concerns will turn out to be right, and more serious than they thought. Let them give him a huge signing bonus,, and then have him face (multiple) suspensions.

Jerruh will pay the man. I mean he still pays Jason Garrett for his mediocrity...

Dallas offense is nothing without him. Hes a complete 3 down back. One of the best in the league.
Elliot does deserve a raise in pay.

Pokes have zero choice, they need to pay Elliot. Jerruh will get 'er done.

Right now they're paying Robert Quinn more than him. Some funny stuff right there.

As long as Zeke is dishonoring things like his contract, he should have taken from the Salvation Army's collection bucket if he wanted more cash.

Marshall Faulk: Dak Prescott will be a 'bum' after he gets paid; Zeke should be angry after Jaylon Smith signing

After this weekend, the Dallas Cowboys will have just one preseason gameleft until the kickoff of their 2019 regular season, but that's not stopping arguably their best player from remaining in Mexico to extend his summer-long holdout.

Or from his new trainer calling Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott a "bum."

Star Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott was recently spotted returning to Cabo, where he's spent nearly a month, after a brief return to North Texas. And now, despite reports of the Cowboys offering him what would be the second-largest RB contract in the NFL, Elliott appears bent on staying in Mexico, where Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk said he'll be training the two-time Pro Bowler.

Faulk appeared on The Rich Eisen Show this week to confirm his connection with Elliott -- and defend the running back's contract demands to the point of questioning whether Zeke's own QB deserves the big money he'll inevitably get.

"This kid has basically carried this team the past three years," Faulk said of Elliott, before suggesting Prescott will be a "bum" once he gets paid and criticizing the Cowboys' recent decision to reward another player with a big-money extension. "I'll be honest with you: If I'm Zeke, and I was sitting down, and I saw that they signed Jaylon Smith, I'm pissed. I'm just saying, I'm pissed."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, of course, seemed to use Smith's new five-year, $64 million deal to take veiled shots at Elliott, telling reporters "it is neat that Jaylon understands that when you have a solid roster ... you have to allocate your resources wisely to keep and have all of those players." That continued weeks of jabs from both sides, with Jones making a "Zeke who?" joke after Elliott backup Tony Pollard's preseason debut, Elliott's camp reportedly declaring the RB will not play in 2019 without a new contract and Jones at one point suggesting Dallas doesn't "have to have a rushing champion to win a Super Bowl."

At this point, it remains unclear whether Elliott, who's due to make $7.9 million in 2019 on a rookie contract that runs through 2020, will be locked up ahead of the Cowboys' season opener vs. the New York Giants.

I'd say the Falcons gave Freeman too much money.

TDs scored since 2017
Gurley 40
Freeman 8

Read a rumor that Zeke said no to money on par with Bell just a bit ahead of TG. Obviously a rumor and we have no idea what the structure of it.

Momentum between Cowboys, Ezekiel Elliott stalls

Just when it seemed likely that Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott‘s holdout would last into the regular season, the pendulum began to swing the other way on Saturday. By Sunday, the pendulum slowed down, considerably.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that, while talks continued on Sunday afternoon, “Dallas is frustrated with the last exchange.”

“After Saturday’s momentum, Cowboys expected more compromise to get a deal done today,” Robinson reports. “Didn’t happen, so it’s on to Monday and a hopeful reset.”

That update from Robinson came after he reported on Saturday that the two sides are “close to completing” a contract extension. That was a stronger version of the Adam Schefter tweet that indicated talks “are intensifying,” with the goal of getting a new deal done “this weekend.”

The Labor Day holiday means the weekend isn’t technically over, which gives the two sides one more day to wear white and/or to see if one side or the other will wave the white flag of the final capitulation that gets a deal done in time for Elliott to join the Cowboys for Week One against the Giants.
