Countdown to Camp: Rams Will have New Starters at OLB

RAMS INSIDER

We’re just under a week from Los Angeles’ rookies reporting to UC Irvine for 2018 training camp. And today, we’re continuing our countdown to camp with a breakdown of the Rams’ outside linebackers.

Newcomers: Obo Okoronkwo, Trevon Young, Justin Lawler

Outside linebacker is one of a couple defensive positions Los Angeles overhauled over the course of the offseason. Gone are both starters from 2017, Robert Quinn and Connor Barwin. The Rams traded Quinn to the Dolphins after seven seasons with the franchise. And Barwin remains an unrestricted free agent at this point.

And so the Rams will begin training camp with two new starters at OLB in 2018.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said during the offseason program that Samson Ebukam will “certainly” be one of them. Heading into his second season out of Eastern Washington, Ebukam played behind Barwin last year as the backup strongside linebacker. But now he’s been slotted as the weakside linebacker, replacing Quinn. This means he’ll get to rush the passer more, which has been his strength. Ebukam recorded 2.0 sacks, three quarterback hits, and 38 total tackles in 2017.

Matt Longacre did not fully participate in Los Angeles’ offseason program, as he was still recovering from a back injury that prematurely ended his 2017. But he appears to be in line to start opposite Ebukam — especially after Morgan Fox went down with a season-ending knee injury during OTAs. Heading into his fourth year, Longacre finished third on the team last season with 5.5 sacks.

The Rams brought in three outside linebackers through the draft as well, selecting Obo Okoronkwo out of Oklahoma in the fifth round, Trevon Young out of Louisville in the sixth round, and Justin Lawler out of SMU in the seventh round. Okoronkwo suffered a foot injury requiring surgery during the offseason program, but is expected back for training camp. With Los Angeles’ multiple injuries at the spot this spring, Lawler received some first-team snaps at OTAs and minicamp.

Rounding out the group are Ejuan Price and Garrett Sickles. Both spent time on Los Angeles’ practice squad and active roster in 2017 and will compete for roles during training camp.

My take...we have on our current roster a bunch of rookies and role players.

Would be surprised if we don't have at least one starter sign with the team as a roster cut off another team.

So...not to be a downer but...I don't think our starting OLB's are even here yet.

Would be great to be proven wrong.

It's rare that starting caliber OLBs get cut in camp.

It's possible that backup depth will be picked up, I suppose.

Keep in mind that the Rams don't have a lot of cap room, so anybody decent is likely to be out of their price range.

I really hope we sign Junior Galette. I think if healthy, he would be a great outside pass rush. Ebukam is also a guy im excited about. He could get 6 or 7 sacks this year.

I actually think Longacre is slightly underrated. He was much better at contain then Quinn last season and his bull rush style of pressure is adequete enough for a starter.

Ebukam improving will be key. And I guess we'll see what the rookie's got.

I'm with you on that. Rams are a bit underpowered in terms of talent at the position. Would be nice to see Okowrongkwo step up in camp when the pads factor in, but yeah the strength of our defense is the secondary and interior DL.

At this point I am hoping Wade works his magic.

IMO Longacre is a mediocre blind side rusher. Put him on the left side, though, and we might have something special. Question is whether any of these kids have the ability to win that right side job. One of the biggest questions for camp tbh.

Still banging the drum for 1 veteran OLB being picked up to help as Rams transition to younger players. Galette seems to be a viable option but maybe waiting for cuts may prove to be more fruitful.

I don't think anyone thinks Longacre is anything more then a average pass rusher. However the run defense was much better with him on the field, which is why he was earning more playing time as the season progressed before his injury.

Curious, why do you see him striclty as a blind side rusher? Obviously Ebukam and Longacare are not pro-bowl bowl level OLBs. But it shouldn't be to hard for these guys to out perform what we got from Quinn and Barwin last season.

OUTSTANDING POINT

I hadn't considered looking at it that way, but hell yes you are right. We don't have very far to go to get to the level of last year. Anything above that is a bonus.

I see him as a mediocre blind side rusher. That's the right side, btw, since the defense is looked at from its side of the ball.

His ideal side is the left side, where you tend to have OTs with slower feet but who mash better in the run game. I think Longacre could be special on that side. In Barwin's spot.

I give you Danny Trevathan. 6th rounder, iirc and he became a stud starter for Wade as a rookie.

Wade has a way of making young, athletic LBs look good. And with our DL, that shouldn't be nearly as hard. We have a MUCH, MUCH better DL than anything they had in Denver during their No Fly Zone days.

Got it! I miss-read what you were saying. I agree with you. When its all said and done that may be what actually ends up happening.
