After an embarrassing loss to the New York Giants across the pond spearheaded by another abysmal Case Keenum performance, the outcry for change in Los Angeles has become borderline deafening.

From all recent reports, fans might be getting exactly what they’ve been wishing for very soon on multiple levels — even if it isn’t what the coaching staff wants.

Fans and media members alike have been calling for Rams coach Jeff Fisher’s head. Even more have been clamoring for the Rams’ top draft pick Jared Goff to start under center.

And while Goff has stated he feels ready for his number to be called, it was reported Saturday that the Rams brass still prefer current third-stringer Sean Mannion over their prized No. 1 pick overall Goff.

Two separate NFL sources recently told John McMullen of Today’s Pigskin that the Rams’ coaching staff is far more comfortable with Mannion as the backup.

if this [decision] was made in a vacuum, Mannion would be the backup on game days, and the one preparing to take over the Rams offense after the next egregious Keenum throw.

With how overwhelmed and lost Goff looked in preseason, this actually should come as little surprise. However, as McMullen so aptly pointed out, the politics of actually having Mannion next in line ahead of Goff after what the team gave up to nab him in the draft, is completely untenable.

As it is — for better or worse — Goff remains next in line awaiting the next grievous Keenum duck.

Moreover, fans may be getting both their quarterback and head coaching wishes sooner than they likely expected according to Fred Roggin of NBCLA:

We are going to have to deal with this all year unless the Rams make a move at QB this year. If Keenum continues to play these kind of articles are going to pop up everywhere.

Agree. It's frustrating how the reports are all over the place.

Ramswire is essentially a fan blog. There's no reporting there it simply takes things others have reported and puts the authors own spin on things. Take it for what it's worth.

I still predict that Goff starts Sunday. What excuse will Fisher use?? It's usually an "injury" to the replaced started so lets see what happens to Keenum during practice this week

I wish they would play Mannion, but if he came in and played well, there would be a QB controversy and Fisher would not look too good after making "the trade".

Despite thinking that Fisher has brought this team as far as he is capable of, and that it is time for the next step with a new staff...and I have no idea which staff that is, I don't buy into the idea that any upstart reporters have any real inside information on our favorite team, despite wishing they did.

There's been no reports of Mannion getting 1st team reps. So I'm not even worried about it.

Lets get to the bottom of this...

Two separate NFL sources recently told John McMullen of Today’s Pigskin that the Rams’ coaching staff is far more comfortable with Mannion as the backup.
http://www.todayspigskin.com/nfc/los-angeles-rams/rams-are-close-to-the-tipping-point-with-goff/

Fisher plans to get Goff some extra reps during the Week 8 bye for the Rams even though Keenum and his receivers could have used them in the shadow of some miscommunication issues in London.

And that means the Rams have reached the tipping point where expectations overtake the best opportunity to win on any particular game day.

Goff is perceived to be the future of this organization with Keenum as the placeholder and that narrative is never changing until the former gets on the field and forces observers to test the thesis.

At that point if Goff flames out dramatically, the Rams move into a new phase centered on plausible deniability as to why in the world they thought a prospect from a spread offense in college with no traditional quarterbacking skills when it comes to autonomy at the line of scrimmage was deserving of being the No. 1 overall pick.

Two different NFL sources told TodaysPigskin.com that the Rams coaching staff remains far more comfortable with Mannion as the next option and if this was a vacuum, Mannion would be the backup on game days, and the one preparing to take over the Rams offense after the next egregious Keenum throw.

There are a lot of scouts in and around the NFL looking over their shoulders right now trying to explain how in the world they possibly thought Jared Goff was a better pro prospect than Carson Wentz.

As the Wentz Wagon rolls on in Philadelphia, fueled by shout-outs from the President of the United States and jersey sales that would make LeBron James blush, Goff, who was taken No. 1 overall back in April, one spot ahead of Wentz, gets used to being the backup to Case Keenum — a reality that, in truth, is not even deserved because the best QB in Los Angeles right now may actually be Sean Mannion.

Some who advocated taking Goff over Wentz, like Cleveland Browns chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta, who traded out of the second spot because he didn’t think Wenta was a top-20 level pro QB, can correctly point out that making declarative statements after a sample size of two games is unfair to everyone.

Those looking for cover also point out that his brilliant start was accomplished against perhaps the two worst teams in all of professional football, the Browns and the Chicago Bears.

More so, the NFL has a way of humbling even the most talented players at times, something that figures to at least start for Wentz in Week 3 when the competition turns from bottom five into top five with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But, the story of Wentz has nothing to do with the raw numbers or the fact that he is the first rookie in NFL history to win his first two starts while not turning the football over, it has to do with the way he handles the position and its responsibilities in an era where most signal callers arrive in the league woefully unprepared to handle what is about to be thrown at them.

Goff, of course, fits into that category after spending his career in Berkeley running Sonny Dykes’ Bear-Raid Offense.

The skill set is most certainly there for Goff, but some of the simplest tasks a quarterback must accomplish in the NFL are foreign to him — like calling plays in the huddle and the terminology of doing that, as well as taking the snap under center.

As for Wentz, he grew up in the pro-style system that North Dakota State runs and is already comfortable with autonomy at the line of scrimmage, whether it’s overlooking the defense and killing from one option to another or handling the protection calls in concert with his veteran center Jason Kelce.

As far as full-fledged audibles, Wentz has taken to them like a duck to water while Goff is still trying to figure out why in the world it’s called Spider 2 Y Banana in the first place.

In other words, Wentz is excelling in advanced calculus class while Goff is still working on his times tables.

So how in the world did a bunch of smart football people believe Goff was a better option than Wentz?

Some of it has to do with circumstance as Wentz is surrounded by better coaching that includes a triumvirate of ex-quarterbacks in Philadelphia in head coach Doug Pederson, offensive coordinator Frank Reich and QB coach John DeFilippo.

Goff, meanwhile, is mentored by a defensive-minded head coach (Jeff Fisher), a first-time coordinator in Rob Boras, whose speciality was tight ends and the offensive line, and a QB coach, Chris Weinke, who is so young he is more of a peer and just two years into the coaching profession.

If you are being completely truthful, however, the argument came down to level of competition for many despite the fact that quarterbacks like Doug Williams, Phil Simms, Steve McNair and Joe Flacco have already proven prospects from the FCS level can succeed on the biggest stage.

After all, if the kid with the high-end skill set from a Pac-12 school fails, you chalk it up to the draft being an inexact science. However, if the prospect taken at No. 2 overall from North Dakota State falls flat and you pounded the table for him, well then your employment is going to be called into question.

Too many used that as a crutch for the decision, obviously.

Politics are part of life and they can cause people to make some specious decisions. In a vacuum, nothing pointed to Goff over Wentz and you are now seeing that play out in real time.

My take...the guy looks to be pretty well connected...and I don't doubt that he has quite a few sources....

This is my feelings exactly! I have a feeling if they played Mannion he would light it up and that would create a shit storm bigger than anything going now.
Politics man fucking politics.

I'd say right now Mannion is probably our best option at QB right now with Goff being our promising future. We should trade Keenums Ass.. no point him being on this roster at this point. Jets, Broncos, or Browns. Send his ass packing.

This Op^ Contradicts every thing I have heard Fisher say about Goff's readiness!!
Fisher has said "... If Goff weren't ready to step in he wouldn't be #2 .." and He has id Mannion is fully capable too!
I think the writer is just being creative in his writing!
