Clay Matthews ready to rejoin Rams defense

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – LB Clay Matthews was eating breakfast the morning after the Rams' Oct. 3 Thursday night game against the Seahawks in Seattle, fully prepared to get ready for next week's home game against the 49ers, when he noticed a clicking sound while chewing his food.

Initially, doctors thought his jaw injury was a sprain. To his surprise, a precautionary visit revealed it was actually broken – stalling a promising start to his first season in Los Angeles which saw him produce 16 tackles and six sacks through the first five weeks.

"Obviously we had to wire it shut or do surgery. Figured it out," Matthews said. "But yeah, it's disappointing in that regard."

Fortunately for Matthews, the hardware that kept his mouth shut was removed "two or three weeks ago," and he's now back on the practice field this week as the Rams begin preparing for the Steelers, ready to put the injury behind him.

Getting to this point, though, required a long month of recovery and dietary restrictions.

Matthews said he could only eat soft food, so he began with oatmeal and eggs and gradually worked his way up. He estimates he lost "four or five" pounds from his diet of soft and blended food.

"Never realized how I much I enjoyed eating until you have your mouth wired shut," Matthews said. "But it was one of those ones that sucks, no doubt about it. Not only being hurt, but you don't realize how much you use your mouth every day, having your mouth wired shut. Especially when your kids don't listen to you, but that's another story."

Indeed, giving instructions to his children was going to be difficult. He could still talk while his mouth was wired shut, but it was all mumbled.

"I got pretty good at that," Matthews said.

From there, it was a matter of sticking to a straightforward rehab program.

"And then once it came off, obviously it just took a long time, as it does with any kind of broken extremity, to get those muscles firing and stuff. Eating, chilling, talking, doing exercises with jaw mobility is the best thing I could do."

Matthews has endured his fair share of injuries: A broken nose during a charity softball game in the summer of 2018, breaking his thumb twice in three months during the 2013 season, an ankle and a hamstring in 2016. This one, though, was different.

"Obviously I've never experienced this before and it was very much a freak injury," Matthews said. "Unfortunate, but hopefully we can put it all past us now and move forward without any more hiccups."

When anticipating whether to come back or not, Matthews said it's difficult to simulate some of the hits a player is going to take in a live game.

While this injury is unlike any one he's had before, it's still the same in that the biggest key coming back from it is playing with confidence – something he feels based on conversations with the doctors, the x-rays, the CT scans and timeline he's been looking at.

"It feels good just having my helmet on it, being out there, just getting it jostled and everything," Matthews said. "I anticipate it to go well. Like I said, that's the thing about an injury – you've got to be able to have a confidence to come back and not played scared or reluctant."

Matthews said that if the Rams had a game last week, it would've been one of those situations where he would've been hesitant to play. Still, he said having the bye week helped. He's now five weeks removed from the injury, and when hen he returns, he'll be wearing a regular helmet.

His status is still uncertain for Sunday's game, but Rams head coach Sean McVay said that if Matthews progresses the right way throughout the week, he should be ready to roll. Matthews himself is confident in his chances of seeing the field.

"I tried my best to get all the nutrients I could, stay on top of my workout regiment as well as my conditioning," Matthews said. "I feel good. I feel like there shouldn't be that much of a drop-off once I come back, and hopefully my play on Sunday says so."

Injury Report 11/6: Cooks ruled out, Matthews returns to practice as Rams prepare for Steelers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Rams WR Brandin Cooks(concussion) has been ruled out in advance of Sunday's game against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

Cooks did not participate in Wednesday's practice and hasn't cleared concussion protocol yet, according to Rams head coach Sean McVay. McVay also said Cooks is scheduled to make a second visit with concussion specialists in Pittsburgh on Thursday after making one during Los Angeles' Week 9 bye.

Meanwhile, LB Clay Matthews returned to practice as a limited participant. Matthews has been sidelined for L.A.'s last three games due to a broken jaw sustained against Seattle in Week 5. It was his first time practicing in a month.

For the Steelers, starting RB James Conner (shoulder) was a limited participant. He did not play in the Steelers' 26-24 win over the Colts last week. Pittsburgh's running back room as a whole is dealing with injuries, as Benny Snell Jr. (knee) and Trey Edmunds (ribs) did not practice Wednesday.

"Only"....that's 2/3 of my daily breakfast staple. I'm a soft food guy mostly... salmon, soft tacos, noodles.... gotta keep the teeth I have left, with nothing crunchier than chips or pizza crust.

Will be good to have Clay back!

Our pass rush should get a boost with Matthews returning. The coverage should be better with Ramsey. And Fowler breaking out makes it even better. Teams are going to have to pick their poison. Continue to double team Donald and let the edge guys have one on one. I can see our defense getting better in the second half.

With the return of a healthy ER Clay Matthews to Wade's defensive backpack we might see #45 Okoronkwo's role expand now.

I will be looking to see #45 seeing some work in the 5 tech DE post where Brockers & Morgan Fox usually are seen. #45 has enough lbs & size 6-2 260 to be utilized regularly as a down lineman on passing situations. Keep an eye out for this Sunday afternoon.

It would be a nightmare for the right side OL'ers to have to deal with both Dante Fowler Jr, & Og Okoronkwo crashing in from that one side with Donald & Matthews on the other.

Or maybe Matthews plays more inside instead of Reeder with the emergence of Obo. This gives them done flexibility.

Matthews blitzing from inside could be a great little twist to the D. And he can cover better than Reeder as well.

I'm getting pretty excited about this defense. I'd love to see a couple of shutouts by seasons end.

Now if we can get that O-line to solidify, our three-headed monster at running back to go off, and have our system quarterback with tiny hands listen properly on his headset, we might make a little noise in the second half.

Would love to see this. Really looking forward to seeing this defense over the back half now that Ramsey has been here a few games and our pass rush is rounding into form. Steelers should be a good game to practice any changes McVay and Wade had during the bye in prep for the battle the rest of the season will be. An offense missing a star QB and RB and a defense that is good but not great should be perfect for a post bye test.

Really glad to have him back and only losing 4 or 5 pounds is amazing. Should mean he's still got his game strength which is important.

I think his role will remain what it was before he was injured. They'll rotate him heavily on the edge and ensure he's fresh and reap the benefits of the impact he gives us. Very unlikely they move him inside until maybe the playoffs if we get in. He's a critical piece to ensure is healthy going into December.

This defense might be ready to make an impressive run. Got my fingers crossed. (y)

This is why I didn't favor Matthew's. He has played well but he's injury prone now. Nothing against him...it's just the nature of the beast.

He's here...so I deal with it...and it's good he'll be back.

Fuck yeah! Having another good pass-rusher to add in Clay will make our defense that much more dangerous...which is really saying something, given how good we've been.

Not sure I'd correlate a freak kick in the jaw with being injury prone.

Clay Matthews was on track to have a 20 sack season.

That's crazy Robert Quinn type numbers there.

This truly was a freak injury for a cleat to contact your face on a tackle. Happens so rarely if ever. I remember ( Les Josephson #34) as a ram FB playing in an old modified helmet behind Gabriel sticking his head in there with a jaw pad. We had the RAMS first ever 1000 yard rusher #33 Willie Ellison and Jim Burtelson from Texas as other RB's.

I see rookie LB #55 Bush from Michigan speedy on Pitt's D being a top tackler for steelers if we can handle Watt. They also have one DT stud who loves to bull rush small centers like Brian Allen. We must bring Rudolph down as immobile as he is he is a tough tackle like Ben was. They have 2 TE's he can focus on. With Chicago defense coming next we need a GREAT showing. I expect one too.

Clay's usually the SAM, right? They'll mix it up but wouldn't the base be Donald/Fowler and Oko/Matthews?
