Chiefs at Rams

MDS’s take: Maybe the best game of this NFL season. Call it a hunch, but I think the Chiefs pull off the road upset.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 31, Rams 28.

Florio’s take: The Rams’ defense isn’t great, but it’s good enough to slow down the Chiefs’ offense a little more than the Chiefs’ defense will slow down the Rams’ offense.

Florio’s pick: Rams 41, Chiefs 38.

Chiefs at Rams, 8:15 p.m. (Monday), ESPN

The N.F.L. could hardly have asked for a more exciting Monday night game. The Chiefs and the Rams, both 9-1, have widely been considered Super Bowl contenders all season and are the best teams in football, along with the New Orleans Saints.

The talent is off the charts. Patrick Mahomes has already set the Chiefs’ franchise record for touchdown passes in a season (31) with six games to play. He is flanked by ultrafast skill players like Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt, and he has a knack for knowing when to take advantage of coverage mismatches on tight end Travis Kelce.

The Rams were the top-scoring offense in the N.F.L. last season, and they have mostly picked up where they left off, with Jared Goff commanding an offense that has Todd Gurley, the best running back in football, and a group of wide receivers that manages to be top-notch even once you account for the loss of Cooper Kupp, who is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

While Los Angeles has plenty of big-name players on defense as well, neither team has done much defensively of late, which has led to the record-breaking over/under of 63.5 points.

Hugely hyped matchups can tend to disappoint, but the all-offense, very-little-defense approach both teams have employed in recent weeks should be a recipe for a game that delivers. The only disappointment is it won’t be in Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium as a result of the field conditions being judged unsuitable for an N.F.L. game.

In truth, the winner of this game is anyone’s guess. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum isn’t a huge home-field advantage for the Rams, and with most other things being equal, taking the underdog and the points seems like the smarter pick. Pick: Chiefs +3.5

Kansas City Chiefs (9-1) vs. Los Angeles Rams (9-1) in Mexico City

Monday, 8:15 p.m., ESPN

This is what everyone’s been waiting for since late September, when they both looked unbeatable. They’ve both lost, but the Chiefs still look more unbeatable with an offense that keeps overcoming their defense’s obvious shortcomings. The Rams’ defense has shown its flaws in recent weeks, too. It comes down to which defense can be trusted more, for the whole game or for any given make-or-break play. That one’s easy — the Rams. Until they prove otherwise, that is.

Prediction: Rams, 38-34
--------------
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2805970-bleacher-reports-expert-consensus-week-11-nfl-picks

Before the NFL moved Monday night's highly touted matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams from Mexico City to Southern California, most sportsbooks had the Rams favored by 2.5 points.

That might have been tempting to those considering the Rams at a neutral site, but the line has since shifted to 3.5 in most spots.

In that case, our guys are in agreement that the Chiefs are the pick.

"I was actually originally on the Rams here at -2.5, but the spread keeps climbing," said Davenport. "I still think the Rams have the better defense, and it's entirely possible they'll win a close one at home. But that's the problem. I get a vibe from this one that's very similar to the Chiefs-Patriots shootout a few weeks back—that this will be a back-and-forth affair that will be won by whoever has the ball last. A three-point spread feels like a push waiting to happen, and as soon as that spread moved past it, I'm taking the points and Kansas City."

Gagnon and Sobleski actually have the Chiefs winning straight-up against a Rams team that has only been surviving of late, even at home. They've won their last three games at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum by just one score each.

"The Chiefs are simply playing better football at the moment," Sobleski said. "The Rams have trailed during the second half of their last three games. Plus, quarterback Jared Goff just lost his security blanket, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, to a season-ending knee injury. Kansas City, meanwhile, is cruising along with double-digit victories in three of their last four contests. With the Rams getting a traditional three-point home spread, the Chiefs are an easy choice."

Score Prediction: Kansas City 35, Los Angeles 34

Los Angeles Rams 42, Kansas City Chiefs 38

8:15 p.m. ET (ESPN) | Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (Los Angeles)

Well, what was once an international game has become a home affair for the Rams. A lot of folks watching this game will be concerned about the Chiefs' defense facing perhaps the most dynamic offense in the league. The Rams rank first in net yards per pass attempt (8.6), first-down efficiency (percent of plays gaining four or more yards), 10-yard plays (183), lowest percentage of drives going three-and-out (8.2) and pass plays going for 20 or more yards (50).

They are so effective on first down that the success makes the whole operation manageable for Jared Goff. The Chiefs also rank 31st in stopping offenses from gaining 4-plus yards on first down. Thus, at least in this game, first down will be more important than third down. That is a pro football rarity. The Chiefs will be asking a lot of Patrick Mahomes. Look for Andy Reid to call for several designed roll-outs and misdirection plays to neutralize, or at least tame, Aaron Donald's impact.

Kansas City Chiefs at (-3.5) Los Angeles Rams, 8:15 p.m.

Mike: Chiefs.
The Rams, like most great offenses, are best slowed by a good offense on the other side of the field. K.C. might be the best one L.A. has seen all season, and I expect the Chiefs to feature the run game against a Rams defense that’s allowed a league-worst 5.2 yards per carry this season.

Andre: Rams. The Chiefs have the 32nd-ranked rush defense, according to Pro Football Focus. That awful rush defense has to go up against Todd Gurley. Also, the Chiefs have beat up on some pretty bad competition lately with wins over the Cardinals, Browns, Broncos, Bengals, Jaguars, Broncos again and 49ers.

Ricky: Rams. There could be a ton of points scored in this game. Obviously. And if that’s the case, I’ll take the defense I trust more to come up with a big stop late in the game. The Rams. Los Angeles’ ability to pressure Patrick Mahomes early and often could be the recipe to slowing Kansas City’s offense — to some extent, at least.

I just hope we get out of the game with no injuries. Is that too much to ask for?

I am surprised. Before reading the above predictions, I would have guessed the consensus pick would be the Chiefs. The one generality I push back against is that there will be no home field advantage for the Rams because of previous games.
1. This game is an outlier. Chiefs fans burned by Mexico City, might not be willing to shell out twice as much to attend this game before compensation..really even more, since plane flights will be purchased on short notice...Rams fans burned by Mexico City are at home, so why not drive a few miles to see their team?
2.Seats will be open with almost no advance warning. They are the only game in town on Monday Night, and it's going to be heavily attended by popular stars. It's LA, after all. This probably the best game of the regular season and is an event.
3. Resellers will be competing with Rams tix outlet who will probably have better tickets for cheaper prices. Season Ticket holders have the option to purchase their normal seats in advance. Why buy tickets just immediately resell them if that's not your business?

That's too little to ask.

No injuries, and a statement win with a defensive effort that impresses so the discussion changes to "the Rams look like the best team in the NFL".

Chiefs fans burned by Mexico City, might not be willing to shell out twice as much to attend this game before compensation..really even more, since plane flights will be purchased on short notice

I think the airlines are waving change fees so it's no real extra cost and even if some airlines don't (can't see them not doing that and earning bad PR on social media) it's 75-200 per ticket on any airline I have changed a flight on. A flight to Mexico City won't be less than to LA so they have no money out of pocket for the flight, and hotel costs will be the same. Since fans cancelled the hotel reservations this is mostly also no increased costs. Some fans have prepaid for flight/hotel packages but one call to their credit card company can get all or a portion of that credited back to them.

I think most of the fans that were going to KC will be in LA. Maybe all of them if Kroenke opens up extra seating like he did for Green Bay fans. Which I expect to happen.

I know 3 Chiefs fans and have texted or talked to them in varying degrees. They said they expect 30K Chiefs fans to be there because this is the most anticipated non playoff game in ages for that fanbase. Evidently even with the venue change there is a huge buzz in that town.

And the weather is looking like a cold snap with a little snow versus sunny and low 70's.

There might be MORE Chefs fans in LA than we would have seen in Mexico City.

Yeah from what I've seen - ive seen more people picking the chiefs.

But given the Chiefs have been winning by more lately that's not surprising, but of course not really meaningful.

walked into local siding distributer warehouse today and was instantly met with " Rams are going to get smoked Monday Night" and " Rams dont have a chance this week". The Falcons fan told me "Rams are going down this weekend" so I told him "on yo mama"

Only guy who said Rams would win is a Faders fan

Kansas City (9-1) at Los Angeles Rams (9-1)
The Rams can actually clinch the NFC West with a Seahawks loss against Green Bay Thursday night, plus a win over the Chiefs. No team has locked up a playoff berth that early since the famed 1985 Bears in the old NFC Central. This will be the first Monday Night Football game at the Coliseum since 1985, and it should be an instant classic if you love offense.

It’s hard to pick against Sean McVay’s Rams, but the Los Angeles defense has been a sieve of late, allowing 34.3 points in the past three weeks against Green Bay, New Orleans and Seattle. The loss of go-to receiver Cooper Kupp (ACL tear) could also hamper a Rams offense that must be able to match Kansas City point for point. We expect lead changes galore and reams of highlight-reel plays, but Patrick Mahomes will come through for the Chiefs when it matters most on a game-winning touchdown drive.

Winner: Kansas City

Chiefs(9-1) at Rams(9-1) - Game of the Week
Originally this was a neutral site home game for the Rams in Mexico City, now the game shifts to the Rams’ actual home of Los Angeles. These two have been two of the top three teams in the NFL all season and this game should be one of the better games of the year.

The starpower in this game is perfectly suited for the Hollywood setting. Jared Goff and his speedy targets Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks against Patrick Mahomes and his lethal targets Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Of course, let’s not forget one of the NFL’s best backs in Todd Gurley bolstering the LA backfield.

The biggest X-factor in this game though, and the star that will shine brightest in Tinseltown on Monday Night will be KC’s dynamic back, Kareem Hunt. Hunt and the Chiefs will match LA play for play and score for score, winning a wild shootout in primetime. Handing Los Angeles only its second loss of the season. Kansas City wins 42-41.

Kansas City at L.A. Rams

The line: Rams by 2.5 (VI Consensus)

Skinny: NFL wisely moved game from Mexico City because of field conditions. I really like both teams -- I'm far from the only one -- but now that it is a home game for the Rams, I lean in their direction.

The pick: Rams, 33-30.

I hesitate to post this, but if I'm responsible, I'll man up and take it.

I had a beard all season. Well, as I was looking like Saddam Hussein right after he got pulled out of that spider hole (a week of spikey migraines can do that to a person), I had help cutting it off and getting a really hot shower to scrub off all the ick.

So, hopefully, all the gunk in the gears is blasted out and we roflstomp the Chiefs.

But if we get blown out, it's because I shaved my beard and I'll just apologize now.

I realize it's totally superstitious, but it's only crazy if it doesn't work....right?.... right???

Yeah I was surprised too. I give the Chiefs the edge what with the Rams losing Kupp, but of course this is one of those games where anything can happen.

Only thing I think is for sure is that there's gonna be a LOT of scoring.

If the interior of the Chiefs' OL holds up, I think the Chiefs win since I dunno that we match up well with their weapons in the secondary.

Conversely, I think if AD and Fowler can play inside/out and really create pressure and sacks from both the interior and exterior, then I think the Rams win.

What can't happen is that the Chiefs can't score 35 in the first half.

I had a friend who, in the early ‘70’s said he wouldn’t shave until the Raiders won the Super Bowl. We made a party out of it after they beat the Vikings. Moral of the story “You should have waited”.

I have long since had the opinion that more beards on a pro team gives you an 'edge' - it's totally un-scientific, and was something I flippantly said one day, but it's stuck with me...

So as long as Jake McQuaid DOESN'T shave we're good for the win...
