NFL shuts down rulebook loophole that Dolphins, 49ers and Rams were exploiting during 2023 season
The league is trying to slow down the speedsters

That does blow chunks! So me thinks this would apply to our jet sweep plays. Kupp or Tutu coming from the outside, moving towards the QB who snaps the ball and hands off to the already in motion receiver. Now the receiver has to come to a complete stop before the snap. This sucks.
Only if the WR is lined up on the LOS. If the WR is back off the LOS wouldn't that be considered the backfield? So me thinks this would apply to our jet sweep plays. The author needs help to understand the rule as he showed a play where Reek is in the backfield. The new rule doesn’t impact him since he’s not on the line of scrimmage.![]()

Knew I could count on yu to explain the position better than I. Good catch.Only if the WR is lined up on the LOS. If the WR is back off the LOS wouldn't that be considered the backfield?
I give you a penny for your thoughts and you give me your two cents.. I think I profited! The author needs help to understand the rule as he showed a play where Reek is in the backfield. The new rule doesn’t impact him since he’s not on the line of scrimmage.
This will however prevent a wr, on the line of scrimmage as eligible, to motion into a jet sweep handoff. If I were McVay I’d line all 3 WRs on the scrimmage line and then back 1 off (would need at least another wr on the same side) have him set, and motion him in the backfield and approach the QB to either fake a sweep, block on run plays, or take a hand off.
Sham-a-man will definitely copy, but this play design exploits the loophole in the play change.
FYI, I’m still uncertain why the new rule results in a false start and a dead ball. If it’s flagged ans illegal motion or shift, that’s a live ball foul. The difference is the illegal shift or motion is correctable prior to the snap, while a false start feigns a snap has occurred. My $0.02.
I'm just guessing, based on penalties I have seen for too many/ not enough men on LOS based on where a WR lined up. I could be wrong, it has happened a few times. LOLKnew I could count on yu to explain the position better than I. Good catch.
Yes thanks to @Loyal protesting near the NFL offices when they considered changing it.Is the butt shove still legal?
