PLAYER OVERVIEW
Focusing on basketball in high school, the NFL wasn't in his plans. But after joining the football team as a senior in high school and attracting attention from FCS-level programs, a professional football future started to become an option. After two seasons at strong safety at North Carolina Central, Smith moved to cornerback as a junior where he starred the last two seasons, becoming the first NCCU player to earn an invitation to the NFL Combine.
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
STRENGTHS: Speed to stick with receivers vertically, gearing down to run better routes than the receiver. Patient feet and body control in press, showing the fluidity to stay in the hip pocket of pass-catchers. Understands indicators and sees the route unfold, arriving to the play with timing. Aggressive hands and works to keep his man uncomfortable. Locates and tracks with the ball-skills to make plays (31 passes defended and seven interceptions in his career).
Click-and-close quickness to drive on plays downhill. Willing in run support and generally gets his target on the ground. Experienced on special teams coverages (one blocked kick). Added kick return responsibilities to his resume in 2015, averaging 28.1 yards per return with one touchdown (14/394/1). Productive starting experience at both cornerback and safety (42 career starts), setting a new school record for career solo tackles (168).
WEAKNESSES: Average-at-best frame for the position with short arms and small hands. Happy feet and can be driven off the top of his routes at times. Will allow his hips to turn the wrong way, allowing his technique to break down. Unpolished with his back to the ball and often late turning his head.
Will guess wrong and bite on play fakes, allowing too much spacing between him and receivers. Needs to improve his run recognition to avoid blocks and protect his lower body. All of his experience has come at the FCS-level.
IN OUR VIEW: Smith is a balanced athlete with smooth movement skills and little wasted motion to shadow routes. Although he lacks ideal size and experience, Smith possesses the start/stop quickness and natural cover traits to contribute in a NFL secondary.
