This offseason the Los Angeles Rams made a bold move by trading up to the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft to land quarterback Jared Goff.
Drafting Goff could have set up an awkward situation in the locker room, especially considering last year’s starting quarterback, Case Keenum, was two field goals away from possibly going 5-0. However, Keenum seems to be taking the fact that he’s splitting reps in camp with Goff pretty well actually.
In an interview that was posted by the team’s official website, Keenum sounded off on the topic by stating the following:
“Nothing’s ever been handed to me, and I don’t expect this job to be handed to me. I’m going to have to earn it and I intend on earning it. That’s the nature of who I am.”
Whether the fans like it or not, Case Keenum is going to be the starting quarterback heading into training camp, and he isn’t going to just hand that job over. Even though Goff was taken No. 1 overall, he’s still going to have to earn the starting role. This means he’ll have plenty of work to do in order to jump up the depth chart for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.
ESPN's John Clayton says Case Keenum will start Week 1 for the Rams
As mentioned above, while Keenum didn’t do anything flashy last season, he did what head coach Jeff Fisher needed him to do, which was enough to almost leave him with an undefeated record to close the season.
Fisher seems comfortable with Keenum, at least until Goff outplays him and earns the starting position. The Rams head coach has had a tendency not starting rookies right out of the gate in the past, as Greg Robinson didn’t start until halfway through his rookie campaign, and even Aaron Donald didn’t start right away.
Right now this is Keenum’s job to lose, and if what he says is true, he isn’t going to give it up without a serious fight. He plans to earn that role and prove he deserves it. This is going to be a fun training camp battle to watch this offseason.
