Anyone know why c. Dicker was kicking p.a.t's. And punting? Kinda cool if he actually had a field goal leg. Do both.

Having a kicker and punter in one roster spot would be a nice advantage over all the other teams. Would be terrifying if he gets injured but having a +1 roster spot has to be tempting.

Having a punter who can be the backup kicker is a wonderful redundancy… means, heaven forbid Gay is injured, we can keep playing that game without changing plans and don’t have to panic sign anyone if the injury is shorter in nature.

Be nice if Gay could be a good back-up punter too

You wonder what the risk of injury is if one roster player both kicks and punts?

I imagine it might not be very elevated. The kicking load itself would seem tolerable. Goalkeepers in soccer give the ball thunderous boots many, many times per game without issue - and they play far more often than once per week, and are active during the game in between their kicking duties, as well. I would be more worried about the player being in a position to be hit more often. That is where I think any elevated injury risk would come from. But kickers and punters don't take too much contact regardless, so that worry might well be remote.

I am surprised we have not seen more dual kicker/punters around, as it seems like a dual skillet that could reasonably be developed by those both inclined and leg-talented enough to play the positions.

If Dicker can swing it (no pun intended), the Rams might start a new trend.

Can you imagine if that one player goes down though, you'd need to cut someone and then fill two positions. First HC to do that (go with one kicker/punter) will have enormous cajones.

I have to think some coach will do it first though. Someone will have the balls at some point to try it. He'll probably get burned too. :laugh4:

Danny White filled 2 positions back in the day. Punter & QB

What about George Blanda? Didn't he fill like 3 slots? Kicker, Punter, QB? I was so much younger then, much younger than before

I remember Blanda but I believe they still had players on the roster in those roles. But not a Raiders fan nor did I like or watch their games back then so not sure.

Blanda did not punt for the Raiders but he was their Place-Kicker; and a back-up-QB who played well in that role.

It’s not a good idea because of ware & tear and the possibility of injury last Ram to do it was Frank Corral.

It would be nice to have a punter that can place kick or visa versa. Too risky to rely on one player to do both.
