So...

This would probably be one of the most tested air crafts when it resumes flying...

That first 6 months... would you fly on it?

Boeing doesn't expect the 737 Max to resume flying before mid-2020

There were signs Boeing would once again have to push back the 737 Max's expected return to the skies, and it just confirmed as much. The aircraft maker now expects the troubled aircraft to start the "ungrounding" process in mid-2020 based on its "experience to date with the certification process." While this still isn't set in stone, it suggests you'll have to wait at least a few months before the 737 Max is cleared to resume flights -- and that's assuming there are no further complications.

The clearest sign of further problems came just days ago, when Boeing found a new flight control computer bug that effectively prevented takeoff. This wasn't the only sign, though. American Airlines recently extended its cancellations of service using the 737 Max from April to June, signalling that it didn't expect a resolution until the end of spring at the earliest.

Boeing has a tentative fix for the safety system design flaw that led to two deadly crashes and the subsequent grounding of all 737 Max jets. However, there are many hurdles to getting it back into the air, including Boeing's own software headaches, certification flights (both in the US and abroad) and checks by the airlines that intend to use it. It's not shocking that Boeing would extend the wait, then, and the company's decision to freeze production has become that much more important in hindsight.

I don't look at the type of place I fly on, so I would and I would not know it. Do the rest of you really check out which make and model of plane you will be on? I know plane nuts will, but regular people?

I am pretty good friends with a SWA pilot and he said he would gladly fly the 737 Max at any time and that the issue was never with the plane, but with the pilots at the controls of those ill fated flights.

I asked our very own @SWAdude about this topic and I believe he had a similar take, but I won't put words in his mouth.

If I didn't say it I certainly feel that way.

This airplane will be the most vetted airplane in the skies when the politics of this great plane finally move to the side.

There will not be a safer airplane to fly. Period. If you won't get on a MAX, take the train. Or a bus. Or drive. Which all three of those are MUCH more likely to get you killed than any US airline.

The press has sensationalized this story beyond belief. Wire bundles and stuff in the gas tanks. The real stories behind these recent headlines are not news worthy. So why not head fake the masses? Good lord.

And yes, I agree with my co-worker. Both accidents had a mechanical issue and it was the crews that did some unexplainable actions that were the largest contributor to these most unfortunate outcomes.

Trust US pilots. We invented aviation and the airline business. We do it really good.

GO RAMS!!!

@SWAdude wasn't the 737max the most contracted plane for Southwest at one time? Will SWA go back into the contract after heavy testing?

If memory serves correct I thought I heard SWA went back to the 767 or maybe an earlier 737 model.

I ask cause I typically fly Southwest as often as possible

The only model SWA has ever flown has been the 737 with the exception of a few 727's for a year or three back in the 70's. I believe we have around 800 737's (non MAX) on the property right now. We both own and lease them.

Right now we have 100 MAXs waiting for the green light. Which is a monumental task to work those back in to the schedule. It will take many months.

I refuse to fly in that POS unless @SWAdude backs up his word and hooks me up with a pair of round trip tickets to Chile to try it out. I think he’s speaking airline propaganda! ;)

How is the world have they absorbed this impact financially? To take that many planes out of service, still carrying the cost of those planes.

Crazy!

That is a good question.

Boeing is footing the bill right now. So far the operating costs to SWA has been minimal. And to the potential loss of revenue, Boeing also has been covering some of the loss in revenue those airplanes would have provided the company.

We will fly the MAX and that will be our airplane for the future.

It will be the safest airplane you can buy a ticket on. It was before this until a system repeated was not repaired properly and a couple set of crews were presented an average challenge and slowly made it worse.

It is what it is. We will be fine.
