Blake Corum expects Rams to use him differently than Michigan did

Blake Corum was a little bit of a surprising pick by the Los Angeles Rams in Round 3 considering they already have Kyren Williams at running back, but they want to be a ground-and-pound offense with their bulked-up offensive line leading the way. Corum was by far the most productive back in the 2024 draft after rushing for 3,737 yards and scoring 61 total touchdowns in his career at Michigan, and he’ll now join an offense that’s been kind to running backs throughout Sean McVay’s tenure.

For the Wolverines, Corum was primarily a runner, only catching 56 passes in his career. However, he expects things to be a bit different with the Rams. Speaking to Rich Eisen, Corum shed some light on what he thinks his role will be in Los Angeles and he plans to be a true three-down back who can do it all.

“I think they’re just going to use me a little differently than Michigan did,” he said. “I was more so a bell cow for Michigan where I was running the ball 20-plus times a game. didn’t really catch the ball much. But obviously, you see how they use Kyren, who’s a great running back. So I think they’re going to use me like a regular three-down running back – a guy that can catch, pass pro and run the ball. Something Coach Ron (Gould) tells us is ‘No block, no rock.’ So we take blocking here seriously. They want a guy that can do it all and I can do that for them.”

One trait he’s eager to show off in the NFL is his ability to catch the ball. Though he wasn’t much of a receiving back in college, he’s confident he can handle third-down duties as a receiver in Los Angeles.

He left no doubt about whether he’ll get opportunities to haul in passes next season, saying he “definitely will be catching the ball.”

“I think whatever they ask me to do, I’m capable of doing,” he continued. “Going into the draft, something I wanted to prove to scouts and coaches that were watching was I’m a three-down back. I can catch the ball. Even though I didn’t really catch the ball at Michigan besides the Rose Bowl. But I caught the ball my sophomore year. I wanted to show them I could do that. I think the coaches saw that. I definitely will be catching the ball. I think they’re going to use me as a three-down back, someone who can do it all. For me, I’m just going to do whatever they ask me to do because I know I’m capable of doing everything.”

With Williams and Corum in the backfield, the Rams are situated nicely to be one of the best rushing offenses in the league. They’re very similar players, something McVay has mentioned since the draft, which will allow the coach to interchangeably use his running backs no matter the situation.

I hope Corum runs precise routes, like Marshall did. It sure would be nice to have a Faulk-esque RB again.

Corum speaks glowingly about RB Coach Ron Gould. No block, no rock. You have to pass pro to get the ball, love it coach!

Faulk ran routes based on what he knew the defense was going to give him to run. Exactly like how Kupp and Puka do. His football intelligence was premier and very rare whereas not a whole bunch of players have that.

As much of a fan of Corum I am I don’t know if he has that type of ability just yet coming out of college. In the Rose bowl he ran perfect routes but was only a one time thing. Curious asf to see how he holds up on 3rd blocking and more receiving coverages.

He does not possess that 5th gear like Gurley but he does possess an elusiveness creating and/or minimizing angles in relation to himself and defensive players.

He blocked good in college when asked to do it but curious how he’s going to be in the NFL as that wasn’t something he had to often as the article states.

Going to be fun learning more about our Rookies and watching them develop this year!

I said when we drafted him I think we're going to have to get used to hearing the phrase "Hot Hand" when it comes to running back carries.

Yes and the competition between two excellent backs should push production plus protect us vs injury. Very happy with this backfield.

Also I would like to see continued improvement in screen execution. It's one part of our offense that hasn't lived up to what you would expect of a WCO for some time now, and partially due to the lack of run threat by the backs we've gone through. A great screen game can help keep a rush in check. So if they can do that plus produce a top run game this offense could really be something.

From little things I've read when I venture over to the Lions board is that Ben Johnson wants to use Gibbs in a receiver role like Faulk

It would be so cool to see Mcvay with a player of that caliber.

Yep, that's one reason I wanted Gibbs so badly in that draft. I believe the future is bright with Blake the Great.

And How come Ben Johnson is still the OC of the Lions? It does not make any sense to me. Not sure what he is waiting for or if he is just scared of being a Head Coach. Commodes wanted him, but then, he took himself out of the running with a new organization with money & a QB of his choice once Williams was off the board, it does not make sense and methinks Johnson is scared.

Pass protection is the one thing talented rookie running backs are slow to pick up. But I always thought desire was a big part of it. If he's committed to excel in that part of the game he should be fine.

That was actually RB Coach Ron Gould telling Corum that.

Funny how the Rams' sudden intelligence with RB, as well as production in the offense, has corresponded directly to bringing Gould in. Certainly the backs factor in to that. But the decision to draft Corum undoubtedly comes at least in part from the RB coach.

Quality of your staff directly affects the roster decisions and how the team plans their depth chart. So in that regard I am enormously happy with this RB coach. Feels so good to know we are two deep in that backfield this season.

He actually addressed this a couple weeks ago.
1. He feels like something is happening in Detroit and he's not ready to leave it.
2. The jobs that are available guess coaches that will not be there in 3 years because the organization is not stable. He'd rather wait for a solid opportunity to coach than leave and be let go.

IDK, well some might admire the loyalty as an assistant coach, you have to strike when the iron is hot or you might be on the outside looking in. Maybe he has an eye on a specific job, however, the Washington situation seemed like a good one. New ownership, fan base rejuvenated plus the opportunity to select the 2nd best QB in the draft.

Maybe Johnson wants more say over personnel, who knows? However, it will be interesting to see where he ends up because sometimes when you keep waiting for everything to align, it doesn't.
