Bortles is trying to rehab his career and is looking for a starting gig, so what do the Rams do at backup in the future? I would think you’d want some continuity over time at that position and not just sign vets like Bortles every year.

I feel strongly the Rams will draft a QB this year and get him ready to be Jared Goff's back up moving forward...I'm thinking the 5th round with the candidates being...

  1. Brett Rypien...Boise State
  2. Ethan Stick...North Dakota State
  3. Jacob Dolegala...Central Connecticut
Or if Jarrett Stidham is still around, IMO, Les Snead won't be able to help himself picking the Auburn alum.

I say wait until 6th round and maybe pick up someone like Ryan Finley - NC State. Smart accurate thrower from what I have read. Perhaps a small investment decent return pick. See what he can do after a year under McVay and company.

I would be amazed if Finley fell beyond the 4th round. But, who knows?

Roster spots are a factor too, Rams only carried 2 QB's last year, will have to cut another position to carry a 3rd QB.

I'd rather see a vet at backup, one that has been at it for his career or a former starter.

Hoping a rookie 6th rounder can help for a shirt stint if Goff gets hurt is a bad plan IMO.

It is for this reason that I don't think we will draft one this year, unless it's with an eye on putting him on the practice squad. Also when you look at our depth needs, it doesn't seem like we can afford to draft a QB.

It would surprise me but not shock me if they took one in the third - especially if they trade down with their first. While Bortles is cheap, most decent backup QBs are getting expensive - like starter at other positions expensive, so the Rams can't count on signing anybody decent going forward. So now is the time for McVay to develop somebody, even though there are other needs too. That is assuming that there is a prospect that McVay really likes, of course.

Its a good topic, however we need to keep in mind that this is the 1st time in McVay 3 off season he's making a change at backup. So continuity has been the tag line so far. My guess would be they draft a QB and let him sit behind Bortles for a year and then have him for the next 3 seasons.
