@nwagoner: Steelers announced they've signed former #Rams C Barrett Jones to their practice squad.

Will be interesting to see how many weeks past week 3 he lasts there.

I'm honestly still pretty disappointed he's cut. The limited time in preseason, I didn't think he showed any worse than Barnes or Rhaney. I wish him all the best. The dude has the chops to play his position. Maybe a year fully healthy allows him to build up the necessary strength.

I just don't think he ever had the physical tools for this level. He may be a great coach someday - but if you saw him without pads on next to Rhaney or Barnes it was pretty clear that there were some upper body strength differences between the 3.

Upper body is less important than lower body, I know - but I have to imagine that every bit of strength counts in the interior.

If we need him, we can just pluck him off their PS down the road.

Thats true if we keep him on thye active roster, and not out of the realm of possibility either.

Still, I'm dissapointed. My Barrett Jones crush has ended. Despite all the injuries, theres no excuse for being deemed "not strong" enough. Dude needs to set up shop in the weight room and not take things for granted. His awards dont help him in the NFL.

I got 7 Army Achievement awards. None of them helped me become a Seargent Major.

They're milking him for our playbook, any other info as we speak!

Took a job away from Dismukes. Aside from the allegations against him being a drunk or racist, would anyone want this guy on our practice squad?

Maybe for a warm body, but if it's to eventually try to get him on our roster then no. Even without mentioning his alleged behavior his knock is that he's too small to be effective in the NFL, gives up too much leverage simply because he's not big enough to stop half of the people coming at him. just like Jones he lacks the body strength necessary not to get bullied around, which coupled with his lack of speed and athleticism doesn't help him when he needs to reach the second level.

Just disregarding his off the field question marks the guy just doesn't have the frame to work in the NFL.

I just hope he doesn't give them all of our offensive secrets. We have done such a great job disguising them in the pre-season. :snicker:

Well the way I see it, he's 6'3" and 296. Pretty much the same as the current centres we have. Barnes is 6'4" 306 and Rhaney is 6'2" and 301. Stash Dismukes on the PS, let him bulk up and see what happens. If nothing, no big deal it's only the practice squad. I feel he'd be a better project then a guy like Laskey on the PS. But, I didn't watch any of his preseason games to know how he's done so far.

Nope. But, I wouldn't mind it if the Rams stashed the other Center they cut, B.J. Finney, on the practice squad.

There are a lot of different ways to wear 300lbs.

I think we want to develop Laskey as an actual full time FB. Harkey is nice, but having a true FB would be imperative if we're true to our commitment of being a ground and pound team. IMO, I'd either replace Hagen, Worthington or Longarce. Though Laskey was fairly underwhelming, I think he might be able to improve.

But I don't think the guy has any bulking up left in him, I believe his frame is maxed out. He didn't really bulk up even through college, gaining only 24 pounds from the beginning of college to the combine, also that won't change his hand size or his arm length which is part of his problems in the first place.

I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on him, see what we can get, no real risk involved, but I don't think Dismukes has it.

Barret Jones was hugely disappointing to me. All those awards and we drafted him injured..We sure like getting FA's and draftee's when they are injured...:wtf:
We waited..and waited...He comes out last year, and gets injured again...He competes this year, and he's got nothing..NOTHING.....What a waste of time and resources.

I hadn't released he was cut. How was he this preseason?
Didn't' get to see him, but from what his reports are like I wouldn't mind taking a flier on him too. Big body, smart player, great snaps and lateral movement knows how to use his hands and has the speed and mobility to get into the second level and keep a block going.

His only knocks seem to be his technique. Tightness, doesn't play flexible and plays too high and tight. Just generally plays top heavy, trying to rely on his brute strength. If anybody can iron out poor technique, it's Boudreau. I wouldn't mind taking a flier on a guy like that.

It would seem to me that the man just can't compete with this level of players. He did a great job in college playing against mostly kids but these are grown men playing at a higher level.
