Could Asshole Face leave Saints to be Rams' coach?

Rapoport: Asshole Face has 'sincere' interest in Rams job

Last March during the NFL's annual meeting, Saints coach Asshole Face nonchalantly mentioned that not only had he agreed to a new five-year contract extension, but also that he was carrying it around in his briefcase. It was a comical end to a year-long saga centered around the question of where Payton would be coaching in 2016.

Payton said at the time, "I don't see myself working anywhere else."

It's time to revisit that view.

With the Los Angeles Rams job open, multiple sources say it is a position Payton is monitoring with sincere interest. For Payton to become the team's new head coach, it would take significant maneuvering behind the scenes to work. One source described the prospects as not imminent or likely but "possible." The Rams, of course, would have to decide he's their overwhelming No. 1.

Payton hasn't been shy about his openness toward landing on the West Coast (his daughter lives in California), and there was plenty of interest last year in possible openings with the 49ers or Chargers, as well as the Colts.

Payton ended up staying in New Orleans for a salary near $10 million per year. Now he could leave just one year into the deal -- and the Saints may allow him to do it.

The Saints haven't been to the playoffs since 2013, despite a franchise QB in Drew Brees. Given Payton's hefty salary, and considering the frustration with another year of "will he or won't he" speculation, members of the organization are said to be tiring of it all. Morale is lower than it has been in the past, and uncertainty over Payton's future is one reason why.

The Saints would demand compensation to allow Payton to leave, but it might not be much. If he really wants out, the Saints aren't likely to hold him hostage, pay him his huge salary and ask him to coach the team when he wants to be elsewhere.

The way a deal would work, theoretically, is the Rams and Saints would agree on compensation first (draft picks or players). Then, the new team and Payton would work out a contract. Finally, the Saints would receive its picks.

Payton has been with the Saints since 2006 and won a Super Bowl. But a decade is a long time with one team -- too long in the eyes of some. With the rebuild almost complete and one more year of Brees, it would seemingly be a good time for all to transition.

With the Rams, Payton would find plenty of talent on defense, a healthy salary-cap situation, a young quarterback to mold and a lot of limelight and flash.

So where are the Rams in their search? Exactly where you'd imagine. Considering all the big names but knowing they are not coaching for a reason. Names like Jim Harbaugh, Jon Gruden, David Shaw all are in the extremely unlikely category.

No interviews are scheduled yet, but they'll likely have a better idea after this weekend of who is in the playoffs and who isn't to map out a schedule. But expect their list to include many of the hot coordinator options, such as Josh McDaniels, Kyle Shanahan, Vance Joseph and others.

The Rams are not looking for a splash. They had one last time -- the most high-profile hire of the cycle -- and it was Jeff Fisher. They simply want the best for their football operation.

As for Payton, a lot would have to happen for him to land with the Rams. And last year, many of the same factors were at play and he ended up staying. It's not a given the outcome will be the same this time.

Just gonna say it once more: Payton is the piece. He is an ideal fit for this team, at this time. As long as he's got a good plan for DC, he's my guy if I am in Demoff's shoes.

Getting this guy will change everything.

NFL head coaches under whom Asshole Face has served:

:sadwalk:payton has agreed to a new 5-year contract extension as head coach of the Saints on March 23, 2016:(

I just don't see it with Payton. I don't. (n)

Not against it, I don't think. But I can't see us trading for any coach.

I would not offer much. If the Saints want to move him because he doesn't want to be there why would you offer anything? They are going to move a disgruntled employee and not just any employee but the leader of the operational part of that organization they cannot win with him in that mode and they are going to dump a $10 million a year anchor.

Anything is too much. There are too many great HC prospects this year. I like the Shanahans, one for HC, and the other to organize the incompetence out of this franchise for the Super Bowl run. Don't want a coach that only has half the team, already had that. We need to restructure from the top and need a coach that recognizes it takes a good defense and offense to get to the playoffs and win a championship, thus the Shanahans.

You know Dave... I think the first time you see Goff and Gurley go the F off and our offense hang 40 on some poor team you'll get over his shenanigans. :p

idk how I feel about Payton. On one hand hes a great offensive mind and his offenses are usually at the top of the league. On the other hand his defenses have been atrocious and in turn have held his teams back and overall has made his teams average to slightly above average. People will point to his SB as a big plus, but i'd argue it was the defense that won them that SB. Their D was arguably the best in the league that season and had an insane turnover total early in the season during their undefeated streak. Not to mention holding the Warner lead cardinals to 14 pts and the manning lead colts to 17 pts in the playoffs and sb

I think Peyton is a very possible candidate and on the short list. He is watching our situation and probably feels tension with the saints situation.

He could go to a Rams team that could really play some defense almost games.

And his specially running an offense is a match made in heaven for Goff and what the Rams need for their huge investment.

That 2009 Saints team scored 510 points. First in the league that season of course. And they hung 31 on the Colts in the Super Bowl.

Their defense was great with takeaways, sure, but they gave up 341 points (20th in the league).

Giving that defense credit is great and all, but disregarding that offense, which was one of the most potent in modern history, is disingenuous at best.

well for starters they scored 24 not 31 considering 7 came from a pick 6, which again furthers my point how important that D was. And Im not trying to take anything away from the offense, but as good as the offense was, its not like we havent seen that before from Payton, yet only to struggle record wise because the defense lets up more points than they can score. My point is that there is little doubt a Payton coached offense will score a lot of points, its the defense that worries me. The one year they managed to win it all was the one year that had a legit defense to backup that high scoring offense and I dont think that is a coincidence. Hes tried to bring in big name DCs and it hasnt worked, now whether thats on him or something he cant control, idk but its worrisome.

As for the D being 341th in pts, that a product of a fast scoring offense that tends to have a big lead early in games. The opponent is going to have more possessions to score points and a lot of them being down 2+ scores where the saints can play that prevent/bend but dont break D. But those large number of takeaways are huge when you consider how effective the offense was and giving them an extra possession or so over there opponent each game is priceless.

Well note that the Rams offense in 1999 only scored 23 in the Super Bowl and as you are aware barely got us through the game vs Tampa. So it's kind of cherry picking to knock them for that, as things happen in the playoffs and it's hard to say what they would have scored had the game been closer and they weren't trying to protect a lead by burning clock.

Bottom line is Payton put together an epic offense. I don't think there is a legitimate counter argument against that.

Having concerns about the way he'd run the defense is fair. But we have some really good pieces that are at a good point in their development on that side of the ball, and you're gonna have similar questions with the hot offensive minds too.

For me it comes back around to Payton being the right guy at the right time for us. In terms of fit, the dude is perfect IMO.

I have to say I agree. Not bashing Sean at all. But what exactly has he done that screams he's the answer?
I say that because he's had some good teams with one hell of a QB..
If we got him I'd support him but not so sure.

He developed Tony Romo and Drew Brees.
