Report: Arizona 'very interested' in Veldheer

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports the Cardinals are "very interested" in free agent LT Jared Veldheer.
Just connecting dots, it appears the Cardinals have moved on from Branden Albert, who was originally their top free-agent target but now seems destined for Miami. Veldheer would be a better signing as far as we're concerned. He's three years younger than Albert with less of an injury track record, and has long been a superior run blocker. Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie surprisingly didn't franchise tag Veldheer, and Oakland is now very much at risk of losing him.

Could be good news for us. If you're in favor of re-signing him of course.

Would be a shame if a lot of teams passed on Saffold due to injury history, he signs back here at a low cost, with a chip on his shoulder and becomes a Pro Bowl guard...wait what's the opposite of a shame?

Could also mean that Saffold may have a deal in place like Albert is rumored to have and the Cardinals are moving on.

. . . only if he is willing to be fair and agree to a contract with incentives based on his starting availability. We would probably have to get a cost effective backup vet or a rookie guard with Beetlejuice's history.

jap with realistic expectations?:

We'd have zero chance to sign him under those conditions jap. Sometimes you have to roll the dice as with Jake Long.

Cardinals eye Jared Veldheer, 'Fins like Brandon Albert

Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett set Twitter on fire Friday by suggesting that tackle Branden Albert was going to join his team.

Whether Dockett was misinformed, well-informed or just having fun, it was a reminder that we shouldn't trust much of the information that gets floated out before Tuesday's free-agency opening.

(Unless, of course, that information comes from NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.)

Rapoport says that the Cardinals are targeting Oakland Raiders tackle Jared Veldheer. Albert is believed to be the Miami Dolphins' top target, according to sources informed of the team's thinking. The Arizona Republic first reported Arizona's interest in Veldheer.

Signing Veldheer would be a smart move to shore up Arizona's pass protection. He could be a superior player to Albert at a lesser price. Veldheer has received an offer from the Raiders, but Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie hasn't got a deal done yet.

If Veldheer left Oakland, the Raiders would have a brand-new hole to fill at left tackle. Rapoport reports that the Raiders have set their sights on Rodger Saffold, who will soon be a free agent. The Raiders see Saffold as a tackle, while other teams see Saffold as a guard.

Then again, perhaps the Raiders just want Veldheer to know they have other options.
