Anyone ever been to Oktober Fest in Germany?

So I'm fulfilling a bucket list item this fall with heading to merry ol' England this year/ Amsterdam / Then to Germany for Oktober fest for about 1.5 to 2 weeks. ANYBODY have any recommendations from experience on any part of my trip? Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated! I've been to Germany 5-6 times. I've never been there for Oktober Fest.

What amazes me about Germany... The age of the country. There are bars that date back to the 1500's. Think about that!

One of my dad's favorite pubs in Dublin was opened in 1170's... There's a Pub in Ireland that was first built in the 900's, said to be the oldest pub in the world... But they've done so much work there it's not the same really... My dad's favorite pub still had some of the original walls, but they're unsure just how big it was when it first opened. They have original walls facing the street and then they've added to the building behind it.. The additions are noticeably different though, so you can tell which is which.

Yep, that's the one. Very good beer according to my father, I haven't had a drink there, but I've been to the pub. I was too young to appreciate it though, I never really appreciated the history in Europe till I left.

I am 90% sure it was in Luneburg Germany. I traveled to Germany for work back in those days and regret I never tacked on much leisure time for site seeing... but that city was beautiful and these pictures are very accurate;

It was more of a restaurant with bar. We ate outside, but inside the bar area a stone section existed with a stone for each owner of the building dating back into the 1500's.

I remember thinking at the time; this building is 200 years OLDER than America.

That what was kept amazing me in London also, CGI..the architecture,size and scope of the buildings that dated back to the 1600's, and are still in pristine condition, yet we have bridges built 40 years ago that are collapsing !

I hear you.

The company I worked for was German owned, so I spent a lot of time with German guests... They would "chuckle" at what we considered old.

Getting a tad off track;

I have lots of funny stories but one of my favorite memories was comment made by a colleague referring to the back seat of a large car he rode in. He said; "the back seat was like a sofa" (in reference to how large it was). You don't see many large cars over there and in particular there are no pickup trucks (or there used to be very very few).

I've been to the German Pavilion at Epcot and FWIW the waitress said she'd never seen anyone drink that many mugs of beer, don't know if they've imposed a limit since then ,10 or so years ago.

I'm going to Copenhagen in September for a conference. When does Oktoberfest begin? I thought it actually started in September. If it overlaps, I'm definitely going down to Germany for Oktoberfest.

Guys seriously thankyou for responding to this thread I just purchased my tickets and you guys gave me a lot to think about. I'll be stopping at Belfast Ireland, London and train to Amsterdam and then on to ocktoberfest! lol I'm going to be dead on my flight home and my new case of std's should just about be popping up about then!
