So I decided to pursue a life long goal of flying and spending time in the air. The whole mechanics and industry has always fascinated me. I've finally gotten to where I want in the IT world and want to start pursuing life long ambitions.

Right now I'm set to get my medical in 2 weeks and start working on my license. I'm not sure about working in the industry yet, was looking for more on the private side. (not 100% on that though) I know at least one of you flies because I remember you posting pictures of the stadium being constructed.

Any advice, pointers, ideas, or info you might have would be really helpful.

.....but likely gives really crappy advice. Thanks @Dodgersrf for the tip. And how about those Dodgers! Fun season so far.

@Corbin I would recommend to find the most reputable local flight school or a great flying club (not many of those left unfortunately. Davis CA has the best one I have been aware of by any chance you live near there) and use the flight schools advice on what is best for you.

Flying is very humbling. If you do not find it so it will not be for you. The only way you learn is by making mistakes. The first flight lesson you will make your first mistake fast. And you will see why you did it wrong, do it right and then return better than when you started. Safety is always number one so your instructor will always put you in a safe position to make those mistakes and learn from them while giving you short leashes throughout your training. Your first Solo will be a life moment. If you continue with your ratings and become a flight instructor which is common with career pilots your first students Solo will be a larger life moment. At least it was for me.

Flying can be very spiritual. Our Temple is the airport. Those who know, know why.

Fifty years and 30,000 plus hours later I still get a kick out of it. My profile pic was taken by an American Pilot over the Pacific on our way to the islands. What a blessing. Flying will always be amazing to this old man.

Please share your journey with us! I would be surprised if I was the only pilot on this board. And hope if there is they chime in with perspective.

GO RAMS!!!

My son is working on his license now. He wants to make a career of it.
Do you know if he plans to go commercial? Or get his instrument rating?
Sure...with every hit on the bong.....

Thank you I was looking for him but he changed his picture and thought it was someone else lol

I live in Albuquerque NM and I'm I've read a lot of reviews with Del Sol Aviation and they seem like the best flight school. Next Saturday I have my first discovery flight to check things out.

Shit man, that's how I been imagining it and you just reaffirmed looking forward for those moments! Man I'm not sure how far along i want to go with it as just a personal license or as an instructor for fun to get more hours? IDK I'm even more excited than I have been!

I've never considered flying commercially but I just might like it enough, do you like flying for SWA?

Holy shit you have a lot of hours! lol I'm just formulating plots to even get 2000 hours! I've always stopped and marveled at planes and jets moving over head and always have. I think the joy might stick with me actually flying for a living if that seems like I won't not appreciate flying anymore and look at it as a job.

Please share your journey with us! I would be surprised if I was the only pilot on this board. And hope if there is they chime in with perspective.

I will! I'll post some pictures this next Saturday for my discovery flight and let you know how it goes!

It amazes me how many people start so young and I'm just getting into it at 42 now! lol Hell, that's something that will keep them balanced and grounded growing I'd think! That's a hell of a trip FL to CA! :wow2: Do they stop for gas?

I've had bad luck with flying. Helos I've been riding in keep crashing. Last time I flew commercially I looked out the window to see the wings flapping like a bird. When I showed it to Maggie she got pissed for me telling her about it. LOL I used to have a friend when I lived in San Diego that had a sailplane. I went up with him a few times and it was a whole different experience. He told me he always wanted to fly but gliding was the cheapest way to get into it.

My Pops is a retired pilot. I'll just say that he got to pretty much the highest level one can go to back when he was in his prime. When he retired from the military... he was a flight instructor for Delta. People always asked him the basic question you're asking.

He would always recommend taking private flight lessons before really committing to it. That is when you will know if it's for you.

I went to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University... but not to become a pilot or a mechanic... there ARE other things taught there but they make you add on extra aeronautical classes to whatever normal degree you are working on. I only bring this up because most of my college friends were going to school there to become pilots. One thing I can tell you that they all had in common was they were all completely addicted to flying. It's almost all they thought about. They loved it so much they would have done it for free as long as they were able to fly. Addicted to it may not even describe it strong enough. They are a breed of their own. You wouldn't believe the sacrifices I watched some of them make just to follow their love.

So when you start getting flight lessons... you'll know if you're one of them pretty damn fast.
