Jerome Simpson suspended six games

There might not be a team in the league more ready for the season to start than the 49ers.
We’re not talking about ready from a compete for a Super Bowl berth standpoint. No, the thought here is that the 49ers have to be ready for the season to start because that would mean an offseason overstuffed with departures and bad news would finally come to an end.
There was a bit more bad news for the 49ers on Tuesday as the team announced that wide receiver Jerome Simpson has been suspended six games for violating the league’s substance abuse program. It’s Simpson’s third suspension and likely stems from a citation for marijuana possession last year.
“The probability of a suspension was known when we signed Jerome,” General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. “Since joining the 49ers, Jerome has proven to be a great teammate. Although he will not be able to participate in the first six weeks of the season, Jerome has done everything asked of him, both on and off the field. We are in full support of the NFL’s decision, and look forward to Jerome’s future contributions to our organization.”
Simpson can practice with the team and play in the preseason before his suspension goes into effect during the first week of the regular season.
Simpson signed with the 49ers this offseason and was out of the NFL last year following his release from the Vikings, which came just after Simpson was reinstated from a previous suspension. He had two catches for 25 yards in the preseason opener and is listed behindTorrey Smith on the team’s depth chart.
