One thing that hit me this season, and particularly watching the SNF, MNF, and TNF advertisements, the NFL is squarely in the middle of "turning over to a new generation" of star players.

Obviously, this is true with all positions… but none more glaring than the QB position;

Old Generation
Tom Brady
Drew Brees
Aaron Rodgers
Ben Roethlisberger
Eli Manning
Alex Smith
Phillip Rivers

All of these guys are mid/late 30's.

New Generation
Goff
Wentz
Prescott
Mahommes
Garoppolo
Watson
Carr

To this list we might add Trubisky, Mayfield, Rosen, Allen, Darnold etc. as some of them will emerge.

I don't know... It just looks like two distinct groups of inbound stars and players at the ends of their career.

Looking closer, there is another slug of stars kind of caught in between; Luck, Cousins, Wilson, Dalton, Stafford, Ryan, Flacco, Keenum… later in their careers, but not as late as the "old generation". But, these guys feel caught between two groups.

Anyway, now more than ever it appears we are in the middle of a passing of the guard. It might take a few years, but the old generation is on their way out... and that group has some mega-stars in it.

You could maybe argue the elite teams are in transition too; Pittsburgh, New England, Seattle on the way down... Rams, Vikings, Jags, Eagles on the way up. But it might be too early to know that for sure.

The NFL is turning over to a new generation.

Without a doubt. There is an excellent new generation of QBs headed up by Goff, who is best set-up for long term success to my eye at least. I am confident both Darnold and Rosen will also do very well in this league, as well. The run option type QBs tend to get all the hoopla but also come with quick flameouts as well as peaks and valleys season to season.

IMO consistent success at this level requires health, which a pocket gives you the best chance of. So of the young guard the pocket type guys will most likely be around a long time, and yes fortunes are going to rise and fall in this league on their arms. No doubt about it. And it's great to see man, particularly since our fortunes look to be on the rise.

Pump the brakes on Mahommes (even Watson to a degree). A little to early. No matter how good a 1st year (first year playing) QB looks, you really can't evaluate them until DCs have some tape on them. I think Prescott is a middle of the road QB. Garappolo has Mechanical and accuracy issues. I think Carr, Goff & Wentz are the next generation, Breese, Brady, Rogers, types, provided they can stay healthy.

Likely a few of the younger guys (Fewer starts) will work their way into the bunch, but everybody makes their mind up on QBs WAY TOO EARLY now. It is funny the vast majority of young QB evaluations end up being dead wrong.

If the Pats have a losing season I have a feeling this will be Toms final year.

If his season consists of throwing for a buck and change with only 1 TD, unless they have a monster off-season, I would expect him to retire.

Also, it's weird looking at the Pats salary situation. They don't really pay anyone, but they're right up against it. It's just...weird.

No mention of the two QB's from Tampa Bay. Rightfully so..

The Harvard Grad's 15 minutes are up & the other is destined for Florida State Penitentiary

Dak isn't a good NFL QB, in any system. His rookie season was uncharacteristic of the player he is.

Yes, there is a new guard, throw out the old guard, but there are still very good vets, out there, just waiting to prove people wrong, or in some cases, continue to earn their place in the HOF.

It's a great time to watch the NFL, to be a fan. It is a great time, to be a Ram's fan.

A lot of guys on the new list, were good, but have already been adjusted to. It will be interesting to see who can make the counter-adjustment. I think Goff, already has. Some of the other guys, too early to tell, but it is an interesting conversation. There are middle QB's too, that haven't been mentioned.

Their pain, is my joy.....:santa:

I'm not completely convinced that some of the new guard on that list will reach heights of some of the old guard. There may be 3 or 4 plus maybe a tweener and some we can't grade just yet. I'm just not sold on Grabmypole, Prescott, and Carr. I think the others could reach some pretty high status, however, if you'll note, of the old guard, none are running QBs. I fear that Watson and Wentz will have far shorter careers for their greater trust in their legs than their O-line and receivers. I think it is also a double edged sword with these kinds of QBs. They don't trust their O-line and yet they put their O-line in the unenviable position of having to figure out where the QB is going to be and who and how to block for him. Give me a pocket QB to build around every time.

Go stand outside naked and yell "I am stupid for adding Mitch to my list".

LOL

I like him, he seems like a really good dude, but he isn't helping the Cowboys and he seems like he is settling in to what he is going to be. Which means the Cowboys need a QB.

The way things are going with the QB being protected they could play into their mid 40's.

Playing good quarterback in the NFL can happen later in players careers or early. It will be fun to see who emerges at the real deals. Goff looks real and Wentz needs to stay healthy. Mahommes has a great arm that makes a difference. Interesting time in the NFL.

Waiting on Mahomes with a larger sample size. Andy Reid is the right coach to develop him but he's certainly fooled the league before with McNabb as a Top 5 QB; AJ Feeley, Kevin Kolb, and Nick Foles are franchise QBs

What about Marcus Mariota? I still think that he can be an excellent quarterback in the right system.
