A hypothetical question

In an alternative universe where Oldnotdead takes control of Rams HQ and we pick our QB1 of the future this year, who would you choose?

Would you trade the farm (we’ll leave aside the exact details of said trade, as this is merely a hypothetical exercise) for one of the top three, or trade up a bit less to guarantee yourself McCarthy or Nix? Do you stay at nineteen and take Penix or A N Other?

If we HAD to take one in Round One this year, which QB would you take?

Under the current offense, Nix makes the most sense. Under the previous version, Penix. McCarthy has talent but the offense he played in leaves a lot of questions, especially in a pass heavy scheme. Daniels is probably the best QB in the draft when I project his career. Williams is withholding his medical records from teams he doesn't want to play for. That attitude immediately eliminates him from a lot of teams.

Outside of the first round, I like Pratt who IMO is at least a year maybe two away from being a quality starter. In the right system, he could have a Brock Purdy type of impact. Purdy is berated by many on this board but from a purely talent standpoint, he's better than most seem to realize. Purdy would be very dangerous as a Ram in the current offensive scheme. Pratt has shown an ability to read defenses which is a prime consideration. Penix is probably the best at reading defenses in the draft. It's why he will probably start as a rookie.

Honestly, if we're forcing ourselves to take a quarterback in this draft, might as well take the best one: Jayden Daniels. If Drake Maye falls, sure, but I don't expect it. I don't trust Caleb Williams. I just don't trust him to be the face of the franchise because something about him is rubbing me the wrong way. I get much, much more of a Kyler vibe around him than a Mahomes vibe.

I couldn't agree with you more. Williams played in a relatively unsophisticated offense giving him half field reads most of the time. It raises questions. We have seen QBs struggle in the NFL with the primary reason being unable to read NFL level defenses. Perhaps he will be able to make the transition. But the NFL requires more from QBs in terms of the ability to quickly process what they see and make the proper decisions. QBs like Purdy aren't the most athletically gifted compared to a say Mahomes but they can succeed because they can process what they see, go through their progressions quickly and make good decisions. Not all QBs no matter how physically gifted they might be can do that. Kyler Murray is a prime example of that. Kyler can run, and possesses a true NFL caliber arm. But Murray can't read defenses and it's why he so quickly breaks the pocket to either run or force a dropped coverage to make the throw. He struggles against a disciplined defense.

So the question remains is Williams more like Mahomes or Murray? That is the real question and IMO do you gamble with a top 5 pick to find out?

I love Daniels, ever since @OldSchool and a few others brought him up to my attention he's by far my favorite QB and I see Mahomes after 3-4 years of experience under his belt already (meaning the running to passing maturity) and type of ability.

Williams obviously has all the talent in the world and is undeniable but isn't worth the head case in his first rookie contract to resigning him. Imagine that negotiation? Him and his father have already pre-signaled their future intentions.

If I'm the GM I take Daniels, my job is to build now and in the future and Daniels seems to knock down 2 birds with one stone.

Mahomes is the goat but like Purdy, a lot of his success is the coaching structure he is in at the NFL
Williams is as sure fire #1 pick as there has been in a decade.
What the media has to do is promote intrigue for the draft to try and have that 1st pick mean something.

The more I see these quarterbacks the less I see the draft as having a good quarterback class. If every quarterback were available and we needed one I'd probably go with Drake Maye. He's got the size, arm and athleticism a good NFL quarterback needs. Like all rookies it would depend on coaching and his own ability to develop.

They said the same about Cam Newton and Mike Vick. I feel it takes more than pure athleticism. As pointed out Caleb and his father seem to be destroying his career before it even starts. I think Daniels and Maye both go before Williams and I think ultimately both might have as good or better careers than Williams as both are outstanding prospects.

Mahomes redshirted his rookie year and worked on his craft. He needed to learn to play from the pocket, clean up his mechanics, and understand defensive concepts. He looks like a lock to be a HOFer but he wasn't as a rookie and was drafted #10 overall.

Maturity and work ethic have been the keys to his success as much as his physical talents. The bottom line is that there is a huge difference between playing in college and the NFL. When Vick was going through the draft process, they said his arm made him a generational talent. That term gets thrown around by the media to hype a player, but it's no guarantee that it will actually translate to NFL success.
