9 key takeaways from Rams training camp

The regular season is still about a month away for the Los Angeles Rams, but they took the next step in the offseason by finishing training camp on Tuesday. They’ve departed UC Irvine and gone back to their headquarters in Thousand Oaks, preparing for their three preseason games and eventually the Bears in Week 1.
Sean McVay said the team will remain in training camp mode and still plans to keep the level of competition high in the upcoming practices, but camp is officially in the books.

Here are nine things we learned from the Rams’ 10 practices of training camp.

1
DeSean Jackson has still got it

(AP Photo/Kelvin Kuo)
It’s only August and Jackson hasn’t played a single game with the Rams yet, but it’s hard not to get excited about his potential in this offense now that he’s reunited with Sean McVay. He’s caught several deep passes from Matthew Stafford, including ones where he absolutely blew by the entire defense and found himself with nothing but green grass around.
Whether he’s truly the No. 3 receiver or a situational receiver, Jackson is going to have an impact this season after shining in camp. It’s just a matter of staying healthy and capitalizing on the opportunities when they’re presented.

2
The interior offensive line is a big question mark

USATSI_16238587.jpg

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports
So much for Austin Corbett moving from right guard to center, huh? That seemed like the plan all offseason after the Rams opted not to add a center in the draft, but things changed in the final days of training camp when Brian Allen took over for Corbett.
McVay said Allen would be the Rams’ starting center right now, with Corbett remaining at right guard. Whether that’s good news or bad is still to be determined, but it’s hard to feel overly confident in Allen as a starter unless he’s improved dramatically from the last time he played in 2019.
It’s unclear if Corbett or Bobby Evans was the weak link up front, but one of them must have disappointed McVay enough to change his mind about the center-right guard combo.

3
Jordan Fuller will likely assume the role of John Johnson

c39dc01d75204d3bb0878feb80d51ee3.jpg

(AP Photo/Kelvin Kuo)
Fuller was a surprise starter as a sixth-round rookie last year and there’s absolutely no question that he’s going to maintain his spot in the secondary this season. If anything, his role is going to be even larger than it was in 2020.
Fuller wore the green dot in practice as the defensive signal caller, aligning his teammates and relaying the calls from Raheem Morris to the rest of the group. That’s the job Johnson had last season and Fuller has begun making a seamless transition to that leadership role. He’s smart, rangy and a good tackler, making him a similar player to Johnson – which is obviously a compliment for the second-year safety.

4
Matthew Stafford has lived up to the hype

Simply by being traded from the Lions to the Rams, Stafford’s stock has skyrocketed, going from being viewed as a decent quarterback to someone who can legitimately win NFL MVP. His performance in training camp has only solidified that narrative, living up to all of the expectations that fans and the Rams have had up to this point.
He’s made no-look passes, drawn rave reviews from Jalen Ramsey for his ball placement and taken shots down the field, consistently hitting Jackson for big plays. McVay couldn’t be more impressed with his new quarterback, a great sign for the upcoming season.

5
The Rams like their current group of running backs

USATSI_16158342.jpg

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
McVay said at the start of camp that he liked who the Rams had at running back behind Cam Akers, who suffered a torn Achilles before camp even began. The team didn’t add a single running back in the last few weeks, a sign that McVay wasn’t exaggerating with the confidence he had in Darrell Henderson Jr., Xavier Jones and Jake Funk.
Jones seems to be the favorite to back up Henderson, with both players making plays in practice this summer. Funk has also impressed his coaches and been lauded as a smart rookie, making him a near-lock to make the 53-man roster. The Rams could still add a running back, but camp did nothing to change McVay’s mind about the current corps.

6
The nickel role remains up for grabs

622e049268864d68ada940729d9ada36.jpg

(AP Photo/Kelvin Kuo)
David Long Jr. is still the likeliest player to secure the No. 3 cornerback job, but Terrell Burgess stood out for all the right reasons in camp, while Kareem Orr and Donte Deayon also performed well in practice.
Long hasn’t yet locked up the nickel role, even if he is the top candidate for the job. It’ll be fascinating to watch who plays where and how much in the preseason as the Rams attempt to sort out their cornerback group. Robert Rochell’s wrist surgery gives Long an even clearer path to the CB3 spot, but no one should be counted out right now.

7
We’re gaining some clarity at inside linebacker

Coming into training camp, it was far from clear which players would be the starting linebackers. Now leaving camp, we have a good idea of at least one starter after Kenny Young emerged and stepped up in a big way this summer.
We still don’t know who will start next to him or how the snap counts will shake out, but Young has a good grasp of one starting spot for now. That’s great news for the Rams, who had arguably the worst linebacker unit in the NFL last season.
Now if Travin Howard or Ernest Jones can keep up their promising trajectory, Los Angeles will be in decent hands at this position.

8
Rookies were relatively quiet at UC Irvine

e1b4439d75c544a2b00ade3defd22360.jpg

(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)
Tutu Atwell began camp on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Jacob Harris missed time early on with a minor injury, Bobby Brown III injured his thumb and underwent surgery, while Robert Rochell also had a procedure done to fix his banged-up wrist.
Needless to say, it wasn’t the most productive or encouraging camp for the Rams’ rookies. Atwell did make some plays when he returned and Ernest Jones played consistently at linebacker, but for the most part, the team’s first-year players were quiet in Irvine. Thankfully, there’s still the preseason for them to gain experience.

9
Donald and Ramsey are still Donald and Ramsey

Also, water is wet, the sun sets in the west and the sky is blue.
But in all seriousness, the Rams’ two stud defenders didn’t miss a beat in camp. Ramsey was a difficult matchup for every receiver he covered, while Donald was the game-wrecker he’s always been.
As long as these two stay healthy and play the way they did last season, Los Angeles will have a top-10 defense, if not a top-five unit again. The combination of Donald’s pass rushing and Ramsey’s sticky coverage makes playing quarterback against the Rams incredibly difficult.

Re: the RBs I don't consider Calais to be a real option. He's a teams roster spot if he makes it. Maybe in a worst-case scenario he can run it for us but he's not much of a threat as a back.

So basically we have a 3 deep RB room. All three do seem to be complementary and all that (Hendy is a breakaway and pass game threat, Jones is a slasher who hopefully can eat carries when needed, Funk is a power option who runs behind his pads with good vision). But the problem is Hendy has had trouble staying healthy. And Funk has two rebuilt knees.

Maybe they do like Calais. No idea there but it seems to me that they're probably waiting for RB cuts to fill that final spot. Seems like a fourth back would be a direction they want to go. That's my assumption right now.

Oh and btw...

I don't think this camp could have gone better. Outside of maybe Tutu not missing time, stuff like that. We have a ton of hope surrounding this draft class, our core guys showed up, and our new QB most importantly has looked great. In many ways (Harris for example) it's gone way better than I dared hope. :thumbsup1:

Let me tell you all about what I think the take aways should be:

(I really can't believe I'm doing this, Johnny Walker Blue taking affect)

1. Funk. That's all that needs to be said. He will make a difference.

2. Jones. Is not a starting caliber RB. Change of pace, yes. Tough runner, not a chance.

3. Calais. Spot filler. PR. Not enough bulk to be an every down back.

4. Higbee. He will stay and be the featured TE.

5. Mundt. Actually a bubble player, not enough of anything to keep him around. Yes, blocks well, has improved his catches but, not enough for me to keep him.

6. Hopkins. Such a sad story. I see no desire in him. See Ya.

7. Harris. Let him grow with us. An awesome weapon.

8. Skow. Can not let this guy attempt to clear waivers for the practice squad.

9. Woods, Kupp, Jefferson, Jackson. Roster locks. Jefferson is going to surprise a lot of you!

10. O-line. I have no idea after Mondays practice. Allen has come alive. Anchrum I think deserves a chance on the 53.

11. DEFENSE. I don't know with the exception of the known players like Donald, Ramsey, Williams.

12. Worlford. He is #2. I think that Perkins is a solid #3.

Well there you have it. I put myself out there. Never done this before. Time to grow some thick skin I guess.

Cameron DaSilva is a poor reporter who really has never taken the time to deep dive into the roster and the players. He takes what he is fed by the PR and jumps to his conclusions after reading other media reports. I NEVER TAKE WHAT HE WRITES SERIOUSLY. He throws shade at Allen simply because others have. Does he ever back that up with examples or analysis? He also thought Blythe was pretty good....huh...evidence he doesn't even watch games or doesn't know what he's seeing.

Jourdan is everything Cameron isn't. Jourdan understands football and understands what she sees. Sometimes I wonder if Cameron goes to games or practices.

He obviously doesn't know the Rams just signed Tyler Hall who was on Atlanta's (Morris' former team) PS as a SCB so this was a specific Morris signing. It wouldn't make sense to sign a player who has been primarily a PS player from another team unless he's going to make the roster. Hall has spent all last year in Morris' system so he knows it and Raheem knows him.

The other signing of Ryan Pope is one of a chance to work him out before the cut to see if he's worth keeping on the roster as a RT prospect or signing as a PS prospect. The guy could have some motivational issues if he's been cut by two teams in two years. He came into the draft as having very good physical traits but really poor technique. He's the kind of guy that is signed late as a speculative player to see if Carberry can develop him in a year on the PS or whether Carberry thinks he's worth a roster spot. This signing is aimed at Anchrum who if played as an OT is strictly a RT and the possible replacement of Havenstein next year.

I simply don't see the Rams not keeping 4 RBs on the roster simply because of their injury history at the position. Calais IMO makes the roster as #4 because he offers additional value as a kick returner in the punt and KO game. I see Anderson on the PS.

For Cameron to say the Rookies were relatively quiet is proof the guy doesn't go to practices or camp. This has been a very good TC for the rookie 2021 draft class. All of them flashed at some point with some more so than others. Several have been standouts. Rochell, Harris, Funk, and E. Jones look to get significant snaps this year. Tutu, Ernest Brown and Bobby Brown, and Benny Sko have shown they will be part of the regular roster rotation next year with solid camp practices. Only Garrett has had a relatively quiet camp but probably has shown enough from what I hear to make the roster. To hit on all your draft choices with potential starts and future key rotational players in one draft class is outstanding. When you look at the possible future elite players in Harris and Rochell they alone would make most drafts successful, so to get 4 standouts in one draft is about as good as you can get. Cameron DaSilva embodies what I call a hack reporter, lazy and ignorant who doesn't even understand the beat he's been assigned to follow.

Not sure who Hanashiro is but seems he knows nothing about the Rams so flush him and his opinion.

Still some question marks and I don’t think they’ll be answered until after the first quarter of the year.

The NFL has thrown away a lot of evaluation time and will collect $$$ throughout camp preseason and the first month of the year while teams figure out who can really play.

I have confidence that the Rams FO and coaching staff can okay this new scenario to get in position to make the second half of the year count and be in position for a deep run in the playoffs.

The interior offensive line is a big question mark
Insane to me that IOL was the biggest question mark of the off-season and we did not bring in any additional IOL talent. In fact we let Blythe walk because we were so "confident" in what we had in the building. All off-season we've been getting fed the Corbett at C and Evans at RG bullshit. Now 3 weeks before the season starts, we are still unsure of the best combo to play opening day. It has the makings of a nightmare and the blame is solely on Snead and McVay.

In free agency EVERYONE around here wanted to sign a top center. We chose not to and there were many available. Draft day we chose to draft a 5th WR in round 2 and a 5th ILB in round 3 over a potential starter or at least a rookie to compete there. Just inexcusable given the state of the interior OL. And now we see the aftermath of the horrible OL decisions we made all off-season. If people think Brian Allen is going to come in and be a good starting Center they didn't watch the 2019 film. However much he improved, he wasn't viewed as a starter allllll off-season until Evans fell on his face the last couple weeks. Nothing he has done has shown he will be a good player. He is in YEAR 4 in the NFL and has shown nothing but shit play. The hubris McVay and Snead have shown when it comes to upgrading the OL talent is dumbfounding.

The about-face is stunning.. but does that automatically means there's a problem?
Instead of changing 2 positions, they're now changing only one... and that guy is a previous starter who's been in the system 3 years.. who has added 10-15 of muscle and will be surrounded by real NFL guards.

I Actually feel you on this. It's really my feeling as well.

But I am going to give them a chance and see how it plays out.

I have flashbacks of Allen getting pushed 10 yards into the backfield on several different plays from 2019.

But what coach in their right mind who has that tape would put their trust in that same player unless they saw a massive improvement?

If we see the Allen of old there is always the option of pivoting to plan B, it's not like they are locked into starting him all season.

Plus there may be a vet C or G cut on another team that we get on the cheap.

That’s a very strong point... The way you laid out the bolded parts.

Rams Leadership is on the hook for these decisions. There will be no hiding it, as their approach went against a lot of fans perception to prioritize C.

They also know they are going to be judged for the Stafford trade… it needs to work or that too will get picked apart. So… Skimping at C seems crazy after what they did to get Stafford.

I simply got to trust them. It appears they were comfortable with Corbett at C from day-1 of the off-season. Never waivered on that, publicly anyway.

The fact Allen supplanted Corbett could be a very good thing. In the Rams eye… their plan is working great. In the fans eye… we are seeing things as a problem, instead of a good thing.

The really tricky thing… We won’t see the starting oline until the regular season, week 1. We won’t really know how things gel until then.

It is possible you are correct. We won't know until maybe half way through that Bears game week one either, since everyone is sitting in preseason.

I have wanted OL two years running in the draft. But at this point I am hoping it goes another way, the more positive way.

My biggest complaint is we are relying on a bunch of oft-injured types. Injury is what I fear will be our biggest enemy in 2021. And I still don't think Morris has a strong feel for quarters like Staley did.

But I'm gonna be positive and hope we get favored by the football Gods re: injuries. If that happens I think we are as good as anyone and why not us.
