Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - The San Francisco 49ers have signed quarterback Josh McCown to a one-year contract.
The team announced the move Wednesday, but didn't disclose terms of the deal for the 32-year-old veteran.
McCown comes from the UFL, where he played for the Hartford Colonials last season, and arrives on a roster that already boasts former No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith and rookie second-rounder Colin Kaepernick of Nevada.
Prior to his brief stint in the UFL, McCown played eight NFL seasons for the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers and passed for 6,584 yards and 35 touchdowns with 40 interceptions.
He last played in the league with the Panthers in 2008 and '09 but attempted just six total passes.
Smith started 10 of his 11 games for the 49ers last season, throwing for 2,370 yards and 14 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.
