Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Tank that painted the Rams horns on his leather helmet, the first time a player or team had decorated their gear?
I do know that he was a major piece of the "Bull Elephant" backfield that was legendary back in that day, this I remember from the book about the Rams that I received for Christmas in maybe 1975....

From Wikipedia:

Logo and uniforms
The Rams were the first professional American football team to have a logo on their helmets. Ever sincehalfback Fred Gehrke, who worked as a commercial artist in off-seasons, painted ram horns on the team's leather helmets in 1948, the logo has been the club's trademark.

Dick Hoerner, Deacon Dan Towler, and Paul Tank Younger: The Bull Elephant Backfield. Throw in some names like Waterfield, Van Brocklin, Fears, and Hirsch, and you have an offense that, everything being level, would dominate even today's NFL. There's a lot of similarities between the 49 - 51 Rams teams and the 99 - 01 teams. I hope I don't have to wait until 2049 for it to come around again!
