  • Bengals trade No. 42 overall (Round 2) to Rams for No. 31 (Round 1)

The Bengals' new coaching staff does not have deep ties to quarterback Andy Dalton, who has two years on his deal and no dead-cap potential. If former Duke star Daniel Jones is still available at the end of the first round, then new head coach Zac Taylor may have an interest in jumping up to grab his future starter. Taylor might also want to get ahead of the Patriots, who hold pick No. 32, if they think Bill Belichick is interested in Jones being Tom Brady's heir apparent. Taylor would probably need to part with a third-rounder (No. 72) or possibly the Bengals' 2020 second-rounder, as the price goes up a round when dealing in future picks, and one of their five sixth-round selections to make the move.

I get the feeling if we trade down it will be for a 2nd this year and one in 2020.

Depends on who has fallen to the Rams - but either of those listed trades would be a large premium for the pick. With a 2nd and a high 3rd the Rams would likely get two nice backups or maybe even starters in year one, and a good chance of getting two starters by year two. The 6th would be lagniappe, and unlikely - but sure would be useful for the Rams trading up in later rounds.

Doing this trade for my next mock. Sounds like an excellent idea.

It's always a guess with Trader Les!

The trade downs sound good in theory. I'm not sure of the fall off after pick 31. If the Rams see a difference maker @ 31 they probably stay. Either way they have to make early picks count. Very confident in what ever the Rams do.

Yep, the best case scenario is that a desirable QB is there at 31. That 5th year on a QB deal is gold.
