1. Its August, when things really heat up, literally and figuratively.

2. The first preseason game was everything I could have hoped for - no significant injuries.

3. I have a love/hate relationship with camp reports and evaluations of preseason play. On the one hand, after months of waiting, I'm eager for real news as the season approaches. On the other, I find myself constantly wishing to respond with "hold your horses."

4. When it comes to practice reports, observers often fail to recognize the "zero sum game" involved. If the OL is struggling, maybe it means the DL is excelling. If receivers are making big plays, maybe it means we have an issue at CB.

5. As for preseason games themselves, putting a lot of stock in what you see (particularly as an untrained layperson) is folly. There is no correlation between preseason wins and regular season records. You need not look any further than 2021, when the Rams went 0-3 in preseason and failed to score 20 points in any of the games.

6. I also find myself trying to balance my impulse to critique with my recognition of the success that our team's leadership has achieved. They know more than any of us, and their track record is pretty darn good. Does that mean we can't criticize? Of course not. I do think, however, we (myself included) sometimes take it too far.

7. Raheem Morris is a good example of this. The way some talk about him, you'd think he was an incompetent failure. In reality, he's a guy who has been on the defensive coaching staff of two Super Bowl champions, including the 2021 Rams. Will that stop me from yelling at my TV when we allow an opponent to convert a 3rd and 9 by throwing a quick pass to a receiver who is unimpeded due to soft coverage? No. But, again, the guy hasn't lasted this long in the NFL for no reason.

8. Trey Lance has become one of my favorite players. Not Lance himself but, rather, the effect he's had on the 49ers. I think its fair to say that, if their current push does not produce a championship, the ill-fated Lance trade will go down as the reason. That, and a timely meeting with a certain Detroit QB in Mexico!

9. Speaking of Mathew Stafford, its amazing how quickly the talking heads have forgotten 2021. Perhaps they are simply unwilling to bank on Stafford's health (which, at the moment, seems to be as strong as its been since he arrived). When I see him ranked in the bottom half of league QBs, though, I just chuckle. If Stafford plays 17 games, I will guarantee he'll be a Top 3 QB in the NFC, and Top 10 in the league, by the end of the season.

10. Aaron Donald is in great shape and has a chip on his shoulder. Opposing QBs... be afraid. Be very afraid.

11. I'm saddened by the recent news about Michael Oher suing the Touhy family. While it comes as no surprise to me that The Blind Side was, at best, "based on a true story," I did not expect to see this type of animosity. It also sounds like, between the two sides' current accounts, there's truth on both sides. You want these stories to be more pristine, but reality gets in the way (Rudy, by the way, later had to pay a large settlement after being accused of securities fraud. Not a great storyline for a sequel.). You just can't have good things, sometimes.

12. Seems like now is as good a time as any to make some predictions...

13. Cam Akers will finally have a breakout season.

14. Cooper Kupp will have more receptions and yards than any two Rams' players combined.

15. Steve Avila will be on every All-Rookie team.

16. Aaron Donald will have 14 or more sacks.

17. The Rams will hit their stride after the first 6-7 games and finish with a 10-7 record, shocking many "experts" and sneaking into the postseason.

18. The Eagles will return to the Super Bowl.

19. Only to lose to the Bengals.

20. Watch out for the Rams in 2024!

As far as preseason games go, I think you can glean a lot from a players personal performance and less about a unit or team as a whole.

Stettson, Nacua, Turner, Young, Hoetch, McClendon etc... I think we got a taste of who they are, good and bad.

Great read as always. Eagles were good last year, but, I think they have improved by quite a bit since then (likely getting the best player in the draft cuz why not). I'm picking Eagles for SB, just edging us out in the NFC championships ;)

9. Speaking of Mathew Stafford, its amazing how quickly the talking heads have forgotten 2021. ... When I see him ranked in the bottom half of league QBs, though, I just chuckle.

I usually try to write my posts and thoughts as my opinions because that is all-they-are.

However, on this point, I feel very strongly. Most of the "Talking Heads" were critical of the Rams' acquisition of Stafford in 2021; and were even more critical of their roster moves and additions (Miller and OBJ).

Most of the "Talking Heads" said it would not work. Most of the "Talking Heads were WRONG.

Instead of being Gracious (a dying trait). Most of the "Talking Heads" reveled in the Rams' terrible 2022 Season, even to the point of rarely acknowledging the impact of injuries. Those same arrogant and disingenuous Talking Heads are still reveling in what appears to clearly be a re-build. It's frustrating.

One Example ... from yesterday ... the Boomer & Gio Radio Show, simulcast on CBS Sports.
I have enjoyed it for years but Boomer Esiason is one of those arrogant and disingenuous Talking Heads.

Boomer supports his former team (the Bengals), and absolutely loves Joe Burrow. Was not happy about the Rams defeating Cincinnati in the Super Bowl, and takes shots. Yesterday, he said that Rams 'Sold their future for Stafford and the 2021 season, and now would be a bad team for the next 5-10 years'

Late last week, Boomer and his partner were discussing the 1st episode of Hard Knocks; and went-on about Aaron Rodgers practicing No-Look-passes. Boomer praised Rodgers, Burrow and Mahomes for their abilities to throw No-Look-passes but no mention of perhaps the best No-Look-pass in the history of the NFL ... Championship-winning-TD-drive in the final minutes of the Rams win over Boomer's beloved Bengals.

Esiason is also a huge admirer of Tom Brady; and loves to say that Brady to the Bucs put Tampa over-the-top for a Lombardi; and it was a great move and accomplishment. Now he often optimistically compares that situation to Rodgers coming to the Jets. However, Boomer never references the Rams and 2021 as a positive example of a good team being aggressive in an effort to win a Championship.

It is obvious when it comes to this, it is usually about money. Did they adopt or not adopt, that is the question? Overall I still feel the scene of Sandra Bullock saying she found Nick Saban extremely attractive with Tim McGraw responding "I'm standing right here." and her responding "I know." is one of the best scenes and many married couples can relate.

As to your Super Bowl prediction, well, I hope you're right because I again don't want the 49ers anywhere near it, but I am going to predict a Jets/Lions Super Bowl just because everyone would be excited for their fan bases even @hotanez who dislikes New York.

Rams are a decent NT and pass rusher away from the playoffs. MHO
Yeah during the 90's I used to say, Rams are 3 players away from being in post season just three players away. Aikman, Irving & Smith.

Yeah the Jets have a real chance this year. That defense was elite last year but they got no recognition because their QBs were so bad. But even with a bad offense they had a fantastic points against so adding Rodgers they'll be a fun team to watch.

Haha, I never realised the Rams sold their soul to win the superbowl.

Did the whiners lose their soul to lose in the nfc championship game for two years running?

Stupid talking heads.
Yeah what's funny is look at how many teams "draft for the future" and end up with a sack of shit. The draft ain't easy. I give the Rams shit about their drafting of OL, TE, and some obvious misses but obviously they know what they're doing it's just that statistically you're gonna miss.

I do wish they would fix their OL drafting though. That feels like it has limited this program quite a bit. It has to be a priority to figure that out.

Wait…isn’t winning the Super Bowl kind of the point of all of this?

I’m confused.

These idiots are fine with cheating to win multiple superbowls. They can't slurp up Brady and bellyfat enough. Like it never happened.

But the Rams, no.
Trade up to draft Goff, the Rams mortgaged their future.
Trade picks for studs and win the superbowl, the Rams sold their soul.

The Rams sold their soul but the cheats are perfectly fine. Go fuck yourselves dickheads.

Yep. Preseason is all about individual play evaluation.

I don’t even know the score of our first preseason game.

It adds a little EXTRA fun rooting against them. That team is setup to win… everywhere except QB. I’m still not buying Purdy.

13. Cam Akers will finally have a breakout season.

Everything is setup for this to happen. He’s locked in as the #1 guy. He appears super motivated and in amazing shape.

Whenever I read this crap about the Rams NOW paying the price for all of their wheeling and dealing and that NOW they are in serious trouble, I think of 2 very important facts:
1) IT WORKED! They paid the price THEN to win a SB and…ready for it?…IT WORKED!

2) as McVay enters his 7th season, the Rams are entering their THIRD roster overhaul. They did it in 2017 (SB in 2018). They did it again and went back and won the SB in 2021. They are doing it again in 2023. Why would any logical person think the Rams cannot do it again?
