I was a Rams fan before this, but this season was the first season where I really became aware of the NFL. It was so fun to see and hear names that I haven't heard in decades. Mercury Morris, Johnny Unitas (passed 40,000 yards in this week) and many more. Woodall filled in for an injured Joe Namath in the Jets game. Namath was quoted as saying that John Hadl was the best passer in the league (lol @den-the-coach ). The Eagles' Roman Gabriel dueled with the Redskins' back up QB Sonny Jerginson while healthy starter Billy Kilmer stalked the sideline.
It's interesting to remember the powerhouse teams in 1973 like the Miami Dolphins (defending World Champs), Steelers, Vikings and Cowboys..
I also realized why I was less familiar with Olinemen's names, Dbacks, etc... on the Rams because I rarely got to see a game on TV at 10 yrs old and only heard about the stars making big plays in the highlights and rarely read a sports page (Don't remember Dad taking a paper back then). This changed quite a bit after I saw a game in person when the Browns played the Rams that year. I believe Dad was gifted those tickets and he took me to the game. We went to Dodgers games much more frequently (less expensive?). Anyway, enjoy this old timers.... You too @Corbin !

I was a Rams fan before this,
I was a tad younger in 1973 (7 years of age in September of that year) but was so upset with the Rams trading Roman Gabriel and going with a bald guy with a belly in John Hadl. However, the Rams played the Dolphins that year in preseason and it was televised on NBC so I got to see the new Rams. it was tough to get Ram news back then, but I would go to the public library because they had out of town newspapers and read the LA Times or the Herald Examiner back then.

My feeling was they were going to struggle with a new coach, QB and philosophy, but everything took off and it started with a win on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs 23-13. A great year in 1973 although a tough playoff loss to the Cowboys on the road, even though the Rams beat the Cowboys that year and had a better record. They rotated home playoff games back. Anyways, here is the 1973 season for those interested.

I did enjoy it. Thanks for posting!

1973 was SO MUCH fun for a young Rams' fan.

The Rams were coming-off a very disappointing and losing season. Fired their head coach (Prothro), and hired a guy no 13-year old Rams' fan had heard of in Knox. Traded two of the Team's most popular stars in Gaberiel and Bacon (one year after trading Deacon Jones). Started a bunch of new guys (about ten new starters in '73), which was odd back then because there was no free agency.

The '73 Rams exploded out-of-the-gate to go 6-0, then lost two close games by a total of three points and then won the final six games to finish at 12-2. The regular season was like the 1999 Rams but, unfortunately, without the playoff success.

Even the little things were great.
Those were brand new colors. Changed from the conservattive white and blue because by the early-1970s, most homes had color televisions. The white and blue looked great on black-and-white TV but were a little boring in color. Notice also that when the Rams wore their road white jerseys, their cleats were White.
At home, with their blue jerseys, the cleats were Blue ... the Little Things.

I like to think of it as an early example of positive discrimination.
