Patriots sign WR Reggie Wayne

He will be 37 in November and is coming off an injury ending season, so it will be doubtful if he gets a crack at one more team.

Reggie Wayne won’t be back with the Colts this season, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to throw in the towel on his career.

Wayne is in Indianapolis on Friday to receive a key to the city and told reporters at a press conference that he still plans on playing during the 2015 season. Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports that Wayne said he’s spoken to teams that have shown interest in bringing him on board for what he says will be a last hurrah in the NFL.

“Ideal is playing one more year and hanging it up,” Wayne said, via Eric Cox of RTV6.

Wayne caught 64 passes for 779 yards and two touchdowns with the Colts last season, but didn’t look like the same player he was before tearing his ACL during the 2013 season. He had surgery to repair a torn triceps and a knee scope after the year came to an end and might not be guaranteed anything more than a chance to compete for a roster spot if he does strike a deal to go to training camp with a team later this month.

Reggie Wayne, who played 14 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before not being re-signed this offseason, may not be done with football just yet.

Wayne told reporters that the ideal situation is "playing one more year and hanging it up," according to Eric Cox of RTV6 in Indianapolis. Wayne also said he's been on the phone with several teams about his plans to play one last season, per Mike Wells of ESPN.

In the spirit of finding a new job for one of the all-time greats at his position (and a fellow Miami alum!), here are a few teams that might make sense as a destination for Wayne.

New England Patriots: Any time there's a talented receiver on the open market, the Patriots make a good deal of sense. Tom Brady can get the best out of all kinds of wideouts, especially possession receiver types like Wayne. Beyond Julian Edelman, New England's depth chart at wide receiver is a bit unsettled: Brandon LaFell and Danny Amendola are probably the next best options, but LaFell isn't exactly the most consistent player and Amendola can't necessarily be counted on to stay healthy. If Wayne wants to play for a sure fire contender, it's hard to pick a better option than the Pats.

Kansas City Chiefs: If Wayne wants to be counted on to play a big role, this might be the best landing spot. Jeremy Maclin is basically the only high-quality receiver in KC (Travis Kelce is on the verge of a breakout, but he's a tight end), and Alex Smith rarely takes deep shots anyway, so Wayne's age and lack of game-breaking speed actually meshes pretty well with the quarterback on hand here. (Chiefs blog Arrowhead Pride has already floated the possibility.)

Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton can always use another reliable target. He's got two young outside receivers in Kelvin Benjamin and rookie Devin Funchess, as well as one of the NFL's best tight ends in Greg Olsen, but if the Panthers want a better slot option thanTed Ginn, Wayne could make a good deal of sense. Wayne played most of his career as an outside guy, but he's spent more and more time in the slot the last few years. In 2014, he hauled in 42 passes from the slot, tied for ninth-most in the NFL. The Panthers aren't a sure playoff bet, but they've won the NFC South each of the last two years and have a whole bunch of talent.

Baltimore Ravens: This is a similar situation to the Panthers. Joe Flacco has Steve Smithand Breshad Perriman to throw to, but the passing-game options beyond that aren't exactly inspiring. Wayne and Smith would give Baltimore one of the older receiving duos in the league, but they're different enough players that it could work pretty well. Both Smith and Perriman have electric speed, and Wayne could provide a bit of a different look either from the outside or the slot. Baltimore is also annually a playoff contender, which should appeal to Wayne at this stage of his career.

Seattle Seahawks: As Grantland's Bill Barnwell wrote last week, every single receiver thatRussell Wilson threw a pass to in the Super Bowl was undrafted. Seattle added fellow former Hurricane Jimmy Graham earlier this offseason and spent a third-round pick on Kansas State's Tyler Lockett, but that doesn't mean there wouldn't be room for a role for Wayne. The team's top wideouts are still probably Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse, who while solid, aren't necessarily the kind of guys who you can't ever take off the field. And heading to Seattle would certainly get Wayne to a contender.

Accurate list. Wayne could help any of these 5, but if he doesn't want to be crippled the rest of his life then he better not play for Seattle.

BTW I want to play one more season too, FWIW! Toughest thing to do as an athlete is walk away, but in Wayne's case I think unless a team comes calling that has a great chance to win a Super Bowl sometimes you just need to kiss and say goodbye.

When the Colts host the Patriots in Week Six, they may be welcoming more than a team that routed them twice during the 2014 season.

They could also be welcoming back one of the greatest players in franchise history. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Patriots have signed wide receiverReggie Wayne to a one-year contract.

Wayne, who had triceps and knee surgery this offseason, took a physical with the Patriots over the weekend. It would appear he proved healthy enough for the Patriots to see if there’s still enough left in the tank for Wayne to help their offense during the 2015 season. If not, the Colts will avoid seeing a franchise icon in another uniform although they’ll still have to figure out a way to beat New England.

Wayne’s arrival will also give the Patriots some more options at receiver while waiting for better health elsewhere in the group. Brandon LaFell and Julian Edelman have missed almost all of camp and Brian Tyms, Aaron Dobson and Brandon Gibson have also been dealing with recent injuries. The move will also leave the Packers to look elsewhere if they want to bring in outside help in the wake of Jordy Nelson’s knee injury as they were reportedly interested in talking to Wayne if things didn’t work out in New England.
