Wow, if Eagles DT Fletcher Cox got paid this much...

I've stopped caring about this sort of thing. It has zero effect on me whatsoever. I get that contracts are a big part of the NFL machine and spending a lot one 1 player can ignore the rest. I only care about Sundays (and the occasional Thursday/Saturday/Monday).

Rams are going the Patriot way. Love or hate it, it works. Draft well, and don't overpay. Unless it's a QB. If Donald wants, (or is going to), 60M gauranteed, adois.

Obviously, not a knock on him, but you simply cannot keep doing that, especially with the overall talent Fisher and Snead keep drafting.

Pay Gurley, and ( hopefully) pay Goff. Otherwise, I'd pass. Von Miller, JJ Watt and Suh are not franchise changers. They franchised Tru for a reason. If he has a stellar year, bet you anything he's gone. And if he doesn't, they made the right move in franchising him.

Develop an eye for talent, not splash signings. Demoff does a great job, but focus on talent, not smart contracts.

Contracts are slowly destroying Seattle, but the Packers keep on keeping on. A good/great QB is worth it, everybody else, not so much.

With the new CBA limiting rookie deals most guys are going to test the market and plenty of them (meaning most) will find a team to overpay. This means that a team that drafts well has a distinct advantage because they are restocking the roster as free agency strips it down. This is the value of Fisher and Snead. Especially Snead because he has had a nose for dirt cheap but decent to good talent.

I mostly agree with you on the sentiment "A good/great QB is worth it, everybody else, not so much". There are exceptions of course and I know you know that I'm not saying you don't get that. You can't have back breaking contracts on 3-4 players and expect to keep a roster competitive. It's a fools game and always has been.

He single handedly won the SB IMO. Also, a great game in the AFC Ship. Pay him anything he wants.
Right. I included those performances but those were the best two games of his entire life. He's a pass rushing specialist and that's about it. Maybe he can prove this year that he can do it all but I think they would be silly to give him JJ Watt type money.

Yeah - there certainly are exceptions, and despite what I said, Donald may be/is one. I think short contracts are the key here, as the guaranteed money always seems to be around 50% of the overall.
contract. Curious as to what the contract vs.salary cap metrics are.

For example, let's say the cap is $150M, QB is mininum 15% of that, now you're at $127.5M. So is the thinking then, "OK, the next 3-4 highest paid players cannot exceed X, say $33.5-50M".
With 3 special players, plus the QB, that leaves you with $90m for 50 players, or $1.8M each (average).

I think if it isn't already, Capology is going to be its own major at college. The permutations are mind boggling.

Could be Snead was raised by parents who know how to stretch a families budget by shopping @ Goodwill, thrift stores & church rummage sales for those good used bargains!

Most NFL fans can not fully digest these true hard facts.

Do you let the best defensive player in the league in Aaron Donald walk if he asks for $125 million? I would hate to see him in another jersey but he can't win games by himself either.

I think it was Bill Polian who said the hardest things to find in this league are QBs and interior pass rushers. QBs have been well paid forever, but now you're seeing that if you can rush that passer from the interior you're gonna get paid. It's a crucial skill, a shortage around the league, and Donald is gonna get paid for that reason.

Rams are already planning for it. Snead even mentioned it at least once, maybe more than once, that he had a guy coming up who had to be accounted for. And it's gonna be money well spent, because AD is not a guy who's gonna get paid and then put his feet up. Dude is a future Hall of Famer.

Georgia might have let Shaw talk her into trading a guy like him or letting him walk, but this team is different now. They're gonna lock him up.

I would not pay Miller or Cox that kind of money, however, I would absolutely pay AD. Different type of person/player IMO.

He walks well before that pricetag, of course it depends on the guaranteed money.

Unless he can play two positions at once. :sneaky:

At this time I'd say it's 50/50 Donald signs a second contract with the Rams. He may well become the highest paid non QB in football. He'll be overpaid by any definition, but he's wildly outperforming his rookie contract now, so that's just balancing itself out.

There's no key or secret to success in negotiating these deals. You have to pay them the market rate or watch them go elsewhere. And hope they stay healthy and productive. There are no guarantees.

Does Philly know that Cox isn't a QB? Seems like that's the only position they know how to (over)pay

The Eagles are nuts! This is the same team who gave Chase Daniels 21 million with 12 million guaranteed to be the virtual #3 QB!! And it's not like they can save money if he becomes the #1 after Bradford departs. His contract gives him even more money if he becomes the #1. Then again, I could never figure out how the niners kept all their stars rolling in dough when the salary cap was instituted.

Just saw on ESPN that the Eagles are #1 at paying guaranteed money, $280.2 million. Twice as much as the next team. Fletcher Cox: 63.3 million: Lane Johnson: 35.5 million, Carson Wentz: 26.2 million, Vinny Curry: 23 million, Sam Bradford: 22 million, and so on and so forth.

Laurie has some DEEP pockets. All that money goes into escrow immediately when each contract is signed.
