I'm not going to keep 6 DEs or 6 S. I believe this is Pettis' last year here. I know long term keeping him on the 2014 roster does little good. That being said he makes the 2014 better than Westbrooks and Bryant. If we believe we are a playoff team we need to take the guy that will help us most this year. Bryant was a 7th round pick and Westbrooks a UDFA. There is a pretty good chance we can sneak one if not both on the practice squad.

You're mistaking full-time starters with WR groupings. This team doesn't have a Torry Holt/Ike Bruce combination that plays all snaps. This team utilizes different WR groupings at different times. There won't be a receiver on this team who plays every snap of the game. I understand you want to jettison what you consider to be dead weight in Pettis and/or Givens, but then all you're doing is limiting what the OC can do at different times AND replacing experience with rookies. I mean, how many times do you want to field an offense that has a year of experience?

This is a pretty decent roster projection even if there might be disagreement on the fringes (e.g. maybe 6 CB and 4 S rather than 5 & 5).

Givens, Pettis... hmm... neither did well without Bradford last year. Week 1 with Bailey not counting against the 53, I have to imagine both will be on the roster unless somebody steps up to shock us during camp or pre-season such as Blake/Veltung. After Bailey comes back, I can see the math catching up to one of these guys. Givens seems like the 3rd in line for small fast guys behind Tavon and Bailey. Pettis seems like 3rd in line for big physical possession guys behind Britt and Quick (and Cook), even if I still need to see the 2014 versions of Britt and Quick in live action. Being 3rd in line puts them on the fringes where special teams contributions will go a very long way to determine who stays and who goes.

Here's the real deal, tho. In the VERY unlikely event that everyone is still healthy come week 5 when Bailey returns, yeah, I can see Pettis getting released. But anything can happen to save that spot. One of the top 5 WRs can be injured. JLong playing healthy and we release OL instead. The top 4 CBs can be playing lights out and so we release a 6th CB instead. We might try to stash a young guy on the practice squad hoping they clear waivers to make space. The roster is really much more fluid than how we fans see it.

In 1 year (2015), if Britt (re-signed) and Quick and Tavon and Bailey prove themselves in 2014... yeah, things get really tough for one of Givens / Pettis.

Here is what I don't get .... why would you do that with a guy like Pettis?

You do that with Quick and Bailey because you are giving them time to develop. Pettis is developed. This is him - this is what he is. And again, he is an NFL receiver - I'm not saying that he isn't. He has a skillset that is usable - he is a big target - but we seem to already have big targets that have passed him.

If he isn't going to make the field on Sundays and you aren't developing him for Sundays in 2016 - then whats the point?

Truth is, I'd like to keep him in case we suffer injuries. But a 53 man roster fills up fast. Really fast.
Britt is injury prone. Tavon hasn't played a full 16 games. Quick has been nicked up already in practices. Not only is Pettis a good redzone guy, but he also knows all the positions at WR. I would keep him this year.

Well, at a minimum - he gets a 4 game window to start the season - we are really talking about a week 5 cut here anyway. The guy does find the end zone, and we need as much of that as we can get.

Hopefully, the final decision is even tougher than we think it will be.

the big men on the outside going up and catching balls. They're the linchpin for success this season.

Gilbert. I hope he shows we'll enough that snisher doesn't want to risk cutting him. A backup developmental QB that shows he can play in this league is a valuable commodity. Valuable enough to be the 53rd.

I still think TJ Moe takes Pettis' spot. But, that's beside the point. The matchup I'm most interested in is Cooks vs Joyner.

Yep I agree with you that ESPN article was close enough. IMO more likely with the history of this OL starters that the Rams will be adding & signing an OL'er instead just saying........

It's seems to be getting tougher every year under Snead and Fisher. In years past we were scrounging around other teams cuts trying to add guys to our 53. From 1-53 this roster is much improved.

I will be watching closely the play of the backup OT's Hooey and Person. Don't be surprised if you see Mike Person getting some reps at Center tonight as well, as his work at LT. I am also going to be looking at Travis Bond, and see how how matches up at RG.

I am not sure how much Quick will play tonight, if he has any lingering effects of the back strain form last week. If you does play, I really want to see him step up and keep the momentum carry over.
