Odd question for a newbie I'm sure, but I'm doing some research on NFL retired uniform numbers, and wanted to know the years the following numbers were retired: No sources (Wiki, Rams' Media Guide, etc) seem to give me the exact years for:

#29 Eric Dickerson
#74 Merlin Olsen
#78 Jackie Slater
#85 Jack Youngblood

And a side question, why did it take until 2009 to properly retire Deacon Jones’ number?

Great question! I know my older brother used to go nuts watching this guy wear it in the late 70's. I think his name was "Holding. Number 75"

Because Georgia didn't like him for reasons I won't go into tonight. But it had to wait until that wretched woman shuffled off this mortal coil.

In fact when DFarr was issued #75 he says he thought it had been retired.

I never connected Farr's number with Deacon's....D'marco came to the Rams in the last year in Anaheim before the team moved to St Louis. Deacon was pretty involved with trying to keep the Rams in SoCal in the 90's, if memory serves. So do you think this was a big FU to Deacon, to give some rookie his number when the team was packing up for the Lou?

I heard Ramd never retired younblood or slater--just never will be issued. I don't know about Merlin or or ED.

I am not sure, but I don't think the Rams reissued Olsen, Slater or Youngblood's numbers after they left the Rams. Dickerson's might've been the year he went into the Hall of Fame.

Well it wasn't retired and so it would be issued at some point, I suppose but you could be right. Why he got it is hard to say, but he acknowledged in the interview that it was Deacon's number. He said something like "I held it up and said to myself 75 is Deacons number". I'm paraphrasing but he was taken aback that the jersey wasn't retired. He didn't say that directly but it wasn't hard to read between the lines.

IMO it would be like an UDFA walking into the Browns locker room and getting handed 14.

It was a really petty thing and I'm sure he and his team mates talked about it privately.

EDIT:

I Googled and came up with this info.

I think it would be a bigger FU that it was given to guys playing on the OL. I'm sure he hated seeing that on TV.

75 -- D'Marco Farr, DT [94]; Bob Fry, T [53]; Tom Gibson, DE [91]; Deacon Jones @ ^, DE [61]; Irv Pankey, OL [80]; Claude Terrell, G [05]; John Williams, OL [72]

I don't know how I feel about retiring numbers. I kind of don't like it, to be honest.

Players can be enshrined in a manner that doesn't require the number to be retired.

But I am probably in the minority on this opinion.

Only two teams don't do it as a rule, the Cowboys and Raiders, but of course they can change their minds if they wanted to do so.

Some teams do it only when the player had a remarkable career and don't retire numbers very often. I think the Browns only do it when a player is voted into the HOF with the two exceptions for Ernie Davis who never actually played before he died and Ernie Fleming who was very, very young. #45 and #46 were retired in their memory. They died literally days apart from each other.

Otto Graham #14, Jim Brown #32 and Lou Groza #76 are the other three. As a side note I don't think Bernie Kosar's #19 is retired but I don't think they give it out either.

And there is your history lesson for today LOL.

EDIT:

Baltimore, Houston and Jacksonville have not yet retired any jerseys.

Nah, I feel the same way. A nice big bronze statue in front of the stadium would, I think, be cooler.

I wonder if a poll of retired superstars would say one or the other would be cooler. It would be interesting to see the different opinions. For some people I think retiring their jersey might be a higher honor. I've heard so many players upon induction to the HOF say it's their biggest accomplishment even if they have SB rings.

It would be a fantastic feeling to have a statue, or have your jersey hanging in the rafters. Tough choice!!!

It's an interesting topic IMO.

Well, in a post-apocalyptic world, like in the movie Damnation Alley, I would think that the statue would still be standing, provided there wasn't a direct strike in Los Angeles. So all the people wandering around looking for food and water would eventually stumble upon the statue and would understand that this particular person was a great man (and the plaque would indicate who it is). Conversely, most (if not all) of the historical documents related to the NFL would be obliterated, and with the crash of the internet and loss of all digital information contained therein, nobody would really know about retired numbers.

So...

Statue.

Retired numbers
Numbers that have been retired by the Rams:

Los Angeles Rams retired numbers
No.
Player Position Tenure
7
Bob Waterfield QB 1945–1952
28 Marshall Faulk RB 1999–2005
29 Eric Dickerson RB 1983–1987
74 Merlin Olsen DT 1962–1976
75 Deacon Jones DE 1961–1971
78 Jackie Slater OT 1976–1995
80 Isaac Bruce WR 1994–2007
85 Jack Youngblood DE 1971–1984

I am not sure, but I don't think the Rams reissued Olsen, Slater or Youngblood's numbers after they left the Rams. Dickerson's might've been the year he went into the Hall of Fame.

Olsen is retired as you can see from the above. I'm assuming you mean Jack Youngblood so his is too.

Scroll down to the bold red font and you will see that you are correct, Slater was the last player to wear #78.

Enjoy the list, it's a fun read!!

So...

Statue.

What if you had been drafted by the Seahawks not the Rams.

I heard Ramd never retired younblood or slater--just never will be issued. I don't know about Merlin or or ED.

Great thread! Replying to friend Steve's post because he is essentally correct. (edit-great follow up research-post, Les) The Rams did not officially retire a few of those numbers but chose not to reissue at the time. Who knows exactly why? Fear of running out of numbers maybe?

If I was to guess when Dickerson's was taboo (not retired, just not issued) sometime in the early 90s and Slater was retired late 90s-early 2000. Merlin and Youngblood's weren't reissued immediately after they retired. There may have been a case where #85 was issued in post-'85 preseason, but was quickly nixed later.

Another interesting jersey retirement/snub was the old QB tandem of Waterfield and Van Brocklin. Waterfield was the football smart & smart flashy guy, the star name, the all-around athlete who could play almost any spot (except the line or LB), even kick and punt. Van Brocklin was also football smart and had that arm, and also set the single game record of 554 passing yards in a single game. Story has it that a DB was trash talking him early in that record-setting game and you don't trash talk Norm, the leader of trash talking and less-than flattering nicknames... for his own teammates! So why the snub? #7 got his retired but #11 never did. Not a real big deal, but interesting. Maybe Norm just rubbed a few people the wrong way... in fact I know he did! Well, they both led the Rams to world chamionships in '45 and '51, with Norm throwing the winning TD in '51 when he came in (used to sub for Waterfield each playing a different quarter or half)

While I'm not a huge fan of retiring too many numbers that there will be less to go left, I also like the small handful that teams do for their great great greats.

I have media guides to double check on, and there's that Great Teams Great Years book from 1973 with a lot of great stories, but it only refers to pre-1973, long before the OP's jerseys in question.

While on the subject of jerseys, another interesting one is the change of jersey numbers per position. Before 1953 the linemen had #s in the 20s-40s, while WR-DBs had #s in the 50s, 80s & 90s. RBs and LBs had #s in the 70s and even 90s! Some QBs had #s in the 60s.Then came the 1953 changes, close to what we have now, but still a few LBs, WRs, and DLwith a variety of numbers until they were all fazed out. The Rams were big on 80s #s for DL until those were taken out of the equation. Vikings were too. While the Cowboys and Steelers stuck with more 60s-70s numbers for their great d-lines. Larry Brooks was the first player to come out with a 90s jersey on the DL with #90 in 1972. A decade later I was not liking the change to more LBs and DL #s to 90s (it just looked really strange then) but it has become the norm for those postions.

I was never mad at John Williams or anyone else using #75 because when I started on the Rams bandwagon he was already wearing it. But yet interesting on how long it took. Deac not a fave with Ram execs over the years?

Okay, rambling over... it's red zone game time!!!
